This easy reader is based on the German Easy Reader Super 500. Its aim is to give the reader further practice at the level reached at the end of that reader. The complexity of the language and most of the vocabulary have been carefully chosen to enable an easy understanding of the text after completing Super 500. New vocabulary is strictly limited and repeatedly used throughout the reader to help you achieve maximum fluency with a minimum of effort. There are FREE recordings of the German stories for you to listen to online or to download.
I give a 5-star rating to this book in terms of how easy it makes it for you to start reading and learning German from scratch, although I should mention I first started with the first volume German Easy Reader: Super 500 and then continued with this one.
The way Brian Smith structures the text and stories to gradually increase the vocabulary, with varied repetitions and ways of saying things really facilitate the understanding and retention of what you are learning. He doesn't have a lot of competition in this regard. Other authors do German-English parallel texts, but they typically don't have such a smooth learning curve.
I give however a 3-star for the stories themselves. They are rather bland, everyday life stuff. It fits the purpose of demonstrating useful vocabulary but it is not as fun and imaginative as what Andre Klein does with the Dino Lernt Deutsch series for example. But Klein is a bit tougher to get into if you are a complete beginner as it is not parallel text.
So in the end I averaged it to 4 stars. It's worth mentioning the audio narrative of the book is available for free as an MP3 file on the author's website. Helps a lot with pronunciation and getting a feel for the spoken language that you can follow along with the text.
This book and the previous one, German Easy Reader Super 500 for Beginners, have helped my German learning far better than any other so-called beginner books. Other “beginner books” have been far too hard. These books start at basic and build quickly with really enjoyable stories. I’m looking forward to the whole series.
This book did exactly what I needed--it helped me improve my reading in German. The vocabulary is nicely introduced and repetition is used throughout the book to really help drill the words into you. By the end of the book, I was rarely looking at the English translation.
