EVEN is a heartwarming and inviting picture book by Andy Gutman. It’s a special book told in few words and with rhymes that read just right. Young children often experience anxiety when they are separated from their parents. Andy Gutman’s EVEN deals with this childhood ordeal in a helpful way, acknowledging the emotions and providing the reassurance. We’re also really pleased that it is written from a father’s Perspective because there are NOT enough books with young daughter’s and fathers as the primary focus. Dads in books are always kind of a background character, or in conjunction with Mommy & Daddy as the unit.
EVEN begins with a father kissing his daughter goodbye, early in the morning, before leaving for work. The little girl doesn’t want his father to leave her sight; Dad feels the same and he reassures her that he will miss her as much she will miss him. No matter how far he is, the father says, his daughter is always on his mind and his heart. He wants her to know how much he loves her. A song that he records for her emphasizes that his love will stay with his little girl whether they are together or apart.
Dad in this sweet picture book uses the most beautiful words to describe his feeling and his love for his young daughter “Even when I am not with you, I am always there Even when I am far away, and in my mind, you’ll stay”. No plot, nothing dramatic occurs, EVEN simply helps the little ones with separation anxiety, in a very gentle and subtle way that we thought was very well done. The pictures are adorable. On each page, beautiful pictures perfectly depict the joyous relationship between a child and a working father. The faces and expressions are right on. The rhymes are well done, the book is cute, and the lesson it teaches is incredible! It is heartwarming and full of pure joy.

This is for all those dad's who have to leave their kids when they go to work every day. We always hear about how much mom's miss their kids when they're at work, but we don't hear about the dads.
Is great that this author touched on a subject we as a society don't acknowledge. I'll admit that even I myself didnt really consider the flip side and how dad's feel leaving their kids every day. My husband will love this book and will without a doubt relate to it as he works long hours and misses our children immeasurably when he's at work. This is a great book for dad's to read to their kids and mom too.

Sweet story! Where were books like this when my daughter was small? I think this would make a great gift for a father to give to his child.! Just wonderful! I loved the illustrations of the father and child thinking of each other and doing things together, too. Really good story. Should be in every child's library.

Distinctive, swirly artwork adds to this simple lyric told to a daughter by an absent dad. For those who need reassurance that they're not out of mind when the parent is working away, this should do some good service.

Even turned out to be a really warmhearted and also uplifting book about a father and his daughter and the very close bond they share.
The illustrations are done in very bright and bold colours and they fit the story perfectly.
Particularly the picture with the most stunning sunset in the background where they are now both old, it sure is very tranquil and beautiful.
In the morning we see the father leaving for work and his young daughter is feeling sad, that he has to go. But she is reassured by her dad, she is not alone, he will be thinking of her when they are apart and so he does.
We see him in his office or during a meeting and there are always moments when his thoughts return home, thinking of his little girl. And we see the girl at school thinking of her dad. (I started to wonder at this point, if the parents are divorced, as the mother isn't mentioned at all.)
Still, when the two are together the father looks after his daughter and cares for her. The bleeding knee is dealt with like it should, the wound is covered with a plaster and the crying girl receives a cuddle and consoling words.
Author Andy Gutman also carefully thinks a bit further. What if dad grows old and one day is no longer there?
Again, there's reassurance, his protective thoughts will never leave her side, there's no reason to feel afraid or lonely.
The text is written in such a way, this could easily be a song, some lines rhyme, others are repeated at a regular rhythm. I liked it a lot. In fact, we see the daughter play a song her dad has recorded for her on her phone.
The theme of eternal love between parent and child turns Even into a very helpful book for children where the father can't be there every day or if a parent has passed away.
The tender storytelling together with uplifting illustrations in vibrant colours offers a positive outlook and helps a child to feel safe and also to trust, she will be looked after and cared for in an hour of need.

As a mother of three daughters with a husband who works full time, this was a beautiful and pertinent story of a father who misses his daughter while he works long hours. I stay home part-time and often hear "where's Daddy?" My daughters enjoyed the story very much, and I could tell they would love reading it with their father.
I do wish the text had spent a little less time focusing on the father missing his daughter. Everything advice one ever read about separating from one's children says to emphasize the joy of the reunion, not the sorry of missing each other. In my experience of separations, asserting that you too will miss your child serves to agitate them more rather than comfort them. It's a minor flaw in an otherwise beautiful and useful text.

From the beginning I thought this was a daddy daughter story. Then parts made me think it was a guy to his girl. The author tries to rhyme, and while most of the story does, it doesn't flow. The cadence is off. That could be the way it’s spaced out on the pages, or just the writing itself. The illustrations don’t help. I like that they are bright and colorful, but ehhhhh. Like mentioned earlier, the illustrations help confuse the reader one who this story is about.

Gutman's picture book, inspired by his daughter, is cute, poignant, and wonderfully expressed. As a parent, we think of what we are missing in our children's lives when we are not there, and treasure them when we are. This book weaves the father-daughter relationship through both the father's and daughter's eyes.

Beautiful story about a fathers love for his daughter. The illustrations were sweet and a pleasure to look at. We really enjoyed this book a lot. Highly recommended.
