The twilight Delhi of the later Mughals, decadent in statesmanship, devastated by marauders, declining in history, still managed to leave behind something more durable than marble and sandstone: a magnificent body of Urdu poetry and prose. It is this facet of the city that Mirza Farhatullah Baig Dehalvi captures in this unique literary work. Drawing upon living memory, manuscripts and other documents, he wrote Dehli ki Akhri Shama , a fictional account of what purports to be the last great musha irah held in Delhi under the patronage of Bahadur Shah Zafar , the last Mughal emperor. The narrative recreates for us the various stages of organizing such an occasion, introduces us to unforgettable people and now-forgotten places, and builds up to the climax the musha irah itself at which all the important Urdu poets of the time are present. The present volume is the first-ever English translation of Farhatullah Baig s classic, accompanied by a long introduction, textual and other annotations, and extensive glossary. Much more than a work of translation, this is a labour of love and scholarship.

مرزا فرحت اللہ بیگ نے 1883ء میں مرزا حشمت اللہ بیگ اور مشرف جہاں بیگم کے گھر آنکھ کھولی۔ آپ کا شمار بیسویں صدی کے بہترین انشا پردازوں، مزاح نگاروں اور شاعروں میں ہوتا ہے۔ اپنے استاد ڈپٹی نذیر احمد دہلوی پر لکھا گیا خاکہ آپ کی پہچان ہے، جسے پاکستان کے اُردو نصاب میں بھی شامل کیا گیا ہے۔ تاہم آپ کے دیگر مضامین بھی آپ کی اُردو دانی اور تخلیقی صلاحیتوں کا واضح ثبوت ہے۔ آپ کی اُردو تحاریر سلیس اور رواں ہیں۔
مرزا فرحت اللہ بیگ نے ہندو کالج، جامعہ دہلی اور سینٹ اسٹیفنز کالج سے تعلیم حاصل کی۔ وہ شروع میں تدریس اور ترجمے کے شعبے سے وابستہ رہے۔ بعد ازاں 1933ء میں وہ سیشن جج ہوگئے اور حیدرآباد ہائی کورٹ کے رجسٹرار کی حیثیت سے ریٹائر ہوئے۔
مرزا فرحت اللہ بیگ نے غیر منقسم ہندوستان میں برطانوی راج کا عروج بھی دیکھا اور اُسے کمزور ہوکر ہندوستان چھوڑنے پر مجبور بھی دیکھا۔ اُن کے ابتدائی زمانے میں اگرچہ مغل سلطنت دم توڑ چکی تھی، تاہم وہ ثقافت اور رنگ ڈھنگ کہیں نہ کہیں باقی تھے۔ مرزا نے اُن رنگوں کو اپنی تحریروں میں بڑی خوبصورتی سے قید کرلیا ہے۔ آپ کو جزئیات نگاری میں ملکہ حاصل تھا۔ داستان بیان کرتے ہوئے منظر کشی ایسی کرتے ہیں کہ ایک ایک رنگ نمایاں ہوجاتا ہے

Also known as: Dillī kā aik yādgār musha'irā
A fictional account describing in great detail the last mushaira of Dehli, set in the 1850s. A rare event where the greatest poets of the age come together under one roof.
Drawing upon living memories, manuscripts and documents, this is a book where fact and fiction blend seamlessly.
At first glance this is simply a depiction of a Musha'irā, but this book is so much more than just that.On reading this we see several glimpses of the cultural and literary lifestyle of the Delhi of those times. A big part of which is the zabān-e-Dilli, Urdu or Rekhta as it was then called. Countless aspects of the time are shown in beautiful detail:
The arrangements made for the Mushā'irā, the special care taken to arrange the seating order of the poets, the way praise is to be given and when it's not to be given, the distinct style in which way each poet recites, the relationship that the poets shared with each other (rivalry, respect, etc). , including the ustaad-shaagird relationship.
The Mushā'irā has all kinds of poets at different poetic levels, hence painting a colourful picture.
One feels like they're actually meeting all these different poets as the writer has vividly described in great detail, the appearance of each and every poet, his habits, his oddities, his nature and attitude towards other poets.
This is an extremely important book that keeps alive the culture of Old Dillī. It's an absolute delight to read this, to meet the great poets of that time, to see them quarrel and yet respect each other, their anecdotes, their styles and overall the fascinating picture of a Musha'irā in Ghalib's Dillī. Hands down one of my favourite Urdu books till date!

کہانی کی شروعات تو دلچسپ تھی۔ کہانی کے مضامین اچھے تھے، بنیادی منظر بھی پر کشش لگا۔ مصنف طرزِ مشاعرہ، شمع کی گردش، شعرائے دہلی کے پہناؤ اور عادات، وغیرہ کو اس انداز سے بیان کرتا ہے گویا چشم دیدہ ہو، مگر یہ دل دبئی کا سلسلہ کچھ ہی صفحات میں ختم ہو جاتا ہے کیونکہ یہ افسانہ ایک کہانی کے طور پر کچھ وزن نہیں رکھتا اور مزیدار نہیں۔ خصوصاً تکمیل والا حصّہ جو مشاعرے کا بیانِ صورتِ حال کرتا ہے، جس میں ایسا معلوم ہوا کہ بیکار میں بہت لمبا کھنچ گیا، چند ہی مختلف باتیں تھیں جو بار بار ذرا سی شکل بدل کر دہرائے جا رہی تھیں، حالانکہ یہ ماننا پڑے گا کہ کچھ غزلیں جو پیش تھیں قابلِ داد تھیں اور یہ اس مشاعرے میں شعرائے دہلی ظاہر بھی کرتے ہیں۔ استادِ فن غالب اور ان کے شاگرد کے کلام کا تو کیا ہی کہنا۔

محض یہی شکوہ ہے کہ ایک کہانی کے طور پر اور بھی بہترین ہو سکتی تھی۔ یہی بات میرے دکھ کا باعث ہوئی اور افسانے کو ذرا غیر دلچسپ بنایی۔ مگر جیسے میں سمجھتا ہوں، مصنف کا ارادہ اس کتاب سے یہ تھا کہ دورِ مغلیہ کے آخری دنوں کا طرزِ مشاعرہ نسلِ نو اور مستقبل کے لیے ایک افسانے کی رنگت میں محفوظ کرے۔ اس لحاظ میں مرزا فرحت اللہ بیگ دہلوی لگ بھگ کامل نظر اتے ہیں۔

Compulsory read for fans of Urdu poetry, especially if they long visit a time zone gathering dust in the pages of history, where the greatest durbars of poetry were adorned during the time of Zafar. Remarkably evocative, lush descriptions - so easy to feel like you're part of these gatherings.

Mushairah is a poetic symposium where poets gather to perform their work. Drawing upon living memories, manuscripts and other documents, The Last Mushairah of Dehli, originally written by Mirza Farhatullah Baig Dehalvi in Urdu as Dehli ki Akhri Shama and later translated into English by Akhtar Qamber is a fictional account of what purports to be the last great Mushairah held in Delhi under the patronage of Bahadur Shah Zafar, in the residence of Karimuddin, the man from Panipat.

would have been better had the edition included the original Urdu verses in an appendix as roman for readers to appreciate, too much was lost in the translation.
