A guide to folk magic from diverse spiritual traditions ranging from Catholicism to Wicca and more
Anyone seeking to mend a broken heart, turn enemies into friends, or find a guardian angel will find encouragement in this uplifting, inspiring, and entertaining book. Author Karol Jackowski introduces, explains, and explores the nature of spells, prayers, and blessings and offers practical suggestions for their use. Readers will learn how to cast spells, create altar space, and most crucially how to live their best spiritual and magical lives.
Karol draws from a variety of spiritual and folk magic traditions with a focus on the power of positive thought. The first half of the book provides magical and spiritual instruction, while the second half consists of Sister Karol's personal book of spells and rituals, derived mainly from Catholic folk magic, but also from Buddhist, Jewish, Native American, and Wiccan influences.
I was given this book by someone who knew that I was raised as a pagan & practiced paganism for 50 years before being recieved into the Catholic Church. Sister Karol has managed to combine Catholic prayers & devotions with witchy ways of petitioning the Creator. This is sencretism at it's most robust self. The book is sweet and helpful to those who have a Catholic background but feel themselves drawn to witchy ways. I only gave this little book 4 stars because of the printing, it is printed in 9 or 10 point font in gray, it may look pretty but it is *miserable* for anyone with difficulties in sight such as myself (trifocals, far sighted, cataracts), what I wouldn't give for a larger print in black. Other than that, it is a lovely little book.
Bought this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by how much it resonated with me. As someone who practices witchcraft, opening up this book and seeing its ties with catholicism made me want to close it back up and return it. However, I decided to power through and I am forever grateful that I trusted Sister Carol, she delivered one of the most eloquent and empathetic works of writing I have encountered to date. This book is never leaving my altar, or my heart, her perspective is refreshing and changed my personal views on humanity and spirituality.
A really sweet book! The beginning section had some great ways to think about magic in a religious or spiritual setting, and it's so refreshing to see this perspective come from someone aligned with Christianity as a Sister.
I only wish she hadn't rec'd things like white Sage for anyone to use. While she explains she's had Native friends (among many others) who helped her gather spells and prayers, a word on respecting practices we aren't meant to be a part of is always a gold thing, and this book is missing that.
Overall, it's still a fantastic philosophical and practical resourc for a magician.
The first book I read as I was beginning my magickal journey, and I return to it often. Sister Karol taught me that magick can be simple, wholesome, sweet, and joyful.
