The defining attributes of the 21st-century economy and fourth industrial revolution are innovation, technology, globalization, and a rapid pace of change. Therefore, an organization’s capacity to enhance the capabilities of its workforce and create a culture of continuous learning are vital to remaining competitive. These trends make an effective learning-and-development (L&D) function more critical than ever. This compendium of articles, from L&D professionals at McKinsey & Company, discusses every facet of professional development and training— from ensuring that L&D’s efforts are closely aligned with business strategy to elements of advancing the L&D function, designing learning solutions, deploying digital learning, executing flawlessly, measuring impact, and ensuring good governance. For L&D professionals seeking to hone their organization’s efforts, Elevating Learning & Development: Insights and Practical Guidance from the Field is the ideal resource.
This is the second book in a stack I am working my way through to get a better handle on the technical, educational, business, operational, and leadership aspects of corporate Learning & Development (L&D) functions. Edited by Nick Van Dam, the global Chief Learning Officer for McKinsey, and containing 19 chapters written by a variety of McKinsey executives and consultants, this book is a rich resource for anyone leading or implementing a corporate L&D department.
I found the book to be very accessible, and full of practical insights and observations--it also felt current, even though it was published in 2018 and a lot can, and does, happen in the space of three years when it comes to the rapid pace of technological and operational change in this space.
I would definitely recommend this as a resource, particularly to anyone who is relatively new to an L&D leadership role and looking to expand their understanding and skills in corporate education.
Great overview of the topic, personally I was hoping for a few more practical tips / best practices i can apply, but as an overview of the topic it is very well written, nice pace and thorough.
