노조키메

북로드 '스토리콜렉터' 시리즈 26번째 작품. '미쓰다 월드'라는 신조어를 탄생시킬 정도로 호평받고 있는 미쓰다 신조의 작품 특징이 고스란히 녹아 있는 대표작이다. 민속학 지식을 배경으로 한 실화 같은 느낌의 괴담, 호러와 미스터리가 결합된 매력적인 혼돈의 이야기는 스멀스멀 기어오르는 한기처럼 독자들을 공포와 미스터리의 감옥으로 조용히 몰아넣는다.

공포소설 편집자 생활을 하다 직접 작가로 뛰어든 '나'는 편집자 시절부터 지금까지 공포 체험담을 채집하여 이를 소설 소재로 쓰곤 한다. '나'는 우연한 기회에 괴담을 전문으로 연구하는 재야 민속학자의 50년 전 대학 시절 실제 체험이 담긴 노트를 손에 넣는다.

내용을 살펴본 '나'는 편집자 시절 채집한 '엿보는 저택의 괴이'라는 공포 체험담을 기억에 떠올리며 경악한다. 왠지 모를 불안감에 제쳐둔 그 체험담과 대학노트에 담긴 이야기 사이에 놀라운 연결점이 있기 때문이다. 시공간이 전혀 다른 두 이야기에 모두 등장하는 괴이한 존재의 정체는 무엇일까? 그리고 이 이야기를 세상에 알린다면 혹시나 그 괴이한 존재가 작가와 독자에게 찾아오지나 않을까?

갖가지 의문과 걱정하는 마음 한편으로, 이 무섭고도 흥미로운 두 이야기를 세상에 알릴 책임을 느낀 '나'는 두 이야기를 나란히 들려준 뒤 자신만의 생각으로 '엿보는 소녀, 노조키메'의 정체를 추리해보기로 한다.

The Peering Eye really isn't as spooky and frightening as some other Shnizo Mitsuda's novels, at least I wasn't scared when I read this novel alone at night, like I did with Mr. Mitsuda's other novels.

Yet the 'murder mysteries' is well set (I won't go into the details due to spoilers), the story finds a balance between mystery and J-horror-style paranormal setting and the tone used by the novelist is good. I really like how the entire spooky business in the remote village and the mysteries surround the strange family eventually have a logical explanation at the very end. 3.75 stars.

千萬要捱過序章——我讀完那篇長長的序章，禁不住罵了出口：「好悶！」。不過，一到兩篇正文，因著氣氛營造得非常好，我就被一直吸引讀到最後，而到終章才發現：序章竟然埋有伏線！終章的解說太精彩——雖然光從那幾個疑問，就推理出那麼多的細節來，並不是很有說服力——把兩段靈異的經歷，給予了邏輯性的解釋，三津田的功力實在了得。是個很不錯的閱讀經歷。
