What Happens in the Dark: The Complete Series

Rate this book
Matt Star had money, power, and influence...the triple threat combination that would make anyone a formidable threat.

Please note: This three-book series was originally published in July 2015. It is now only available in this boxed set form. However, it is my first book/series, it is unedited, and I don't consider my earlier work to be an accurate reflection of my most recent work.

Lizzie Winter is just three short months away from graduation when the unthinkable happens.
A prank gone wrong by the football team takes a devastating turn and changes her life forever. Just when things can't get any worse, Matt Star decides to up the ante and throw blackmail and manipulation into the mix. To complicate matters, Lizzie starts developing feelings for Matt's best friend, Brandon Rivers.
Brandon suspects something's off with Lizzie and Matt's relationship, but Lizzie is sworn to secrecy. The only way she can protect Brandon, and everyone else she cares about is to continue lying.
Will Brandon be able to figure out what Matt is doing to Lizzie, and save her before its too late? Or will Lizzie be forced to do everything she can in order to save Brandon from Matt's sick, psychopathic ways?

*Trigger Warning* This book is not suitable for readers under 18. This book contains elements of emotional, sexual, and physical cruelty. Any readers with sensitivity to the above topics should proceed with caution, and at their own risk.

woah. WOAH.

I didn't see that detour!! I didn't see it coming! from our introduction, I was such an abrupt turn in a whole different direction.

This here, is 3 books in 1.

1 What happens in the Dark

2 Always Comes to Light

3 Against the Darkest Shadow (Broken up into 3 parts)

The first book, What Happens in the Dark, caught me off guard a bit. I mean, I got this recommendation from my dark book group. I thought I was being set up again. BUT, it had wayyyy more potential than that other one .. what was it.. ah yes, Untouchable by Sam Mariano. Book 1 of this series had WAY more potential. Thus, why I kept going. I kept reading. I was starting to get annoyed a bit because I am not the biggest fan of "school" aged books. But the potential kept dragging me in. There were many times I considered stopping. But here's the thing... I always try to finish what I read.

Plus, I mentioned this was brought up in my dark group? I had to find out. How much darker can this get?

Book 1 ranked about ivory on my dark scale.

Enter book 2. Alright, things are looking brighter (be that good or bad). Was kind of continuing this ...same atmosphere from the first book. I mean, it picked up a little bit in the rain. But still ranked about ivory at this point. Towards the end though, had me sitting up a bit. Well now, now we're talking. But once book 2 ended... I had to ask myself again...was I set up? was this the dark factor? by the end of book 2, it ranked about light grey (possibly a little lighter). But I enjoyed that little turn of events.

Plus the cliffhanger had me curiouser and curiouser...

Book 3. Yo, this is where it's at. This is where multiple detours and turns happened. Wow, the conclusion of this trilogy was something else. Something I couldn't tear my eyes away from. I was leaning forward and captivated. Had to know what was going to happen..how things were going to play out. This book, book 3, I rank about light dark/bordering dark .

Oh but what a journey it was. I was very very pleasantly surprised. I loved how the author handled the outcomes, how things came to be, what had to be gone through. Kudos.

*3.5/4 stars for book 1. I rank this Ivory on my dark scale.
4 stars for book 2. I rank this ivory/light grey on my dark scale.
5 stars for book 3. I rank this light dark/bordering dark on my scale.

This tale took me for an unexpected, delightfully twisted ride. The storyline evolves in so many different ways, and as it progresses you are pleasantly surprised at each outcome. I was held captive the entire read. Surprised that this story is one of the author's first works. Fantastic, dark, love-triangle read.

Worst case scenario....(book1)

What Happens in Dark is about Lizzie who has a tragic situation happen to her right before graduation. When she tries to move on from it, the biggest scum-bag in the school goes and blackmail her. Matt the QB is a SOB. He thinks he can do whatever he wants and not pay any consequences for it. Matt loves to humiliate Lizzie, in front of everyone especially Brandon. Brandon is his friend and her savior. When he sees that his superhero complex is for nothing he gets mad with her. Brandon doesn't understand why Lizzie is going along with everything Matt is doing to her but protects her from the worst of it.

The Light is not Nice.......(book2)

Matt, Brandon, and Lizzie is back in this crazy story of I love you but I love you more and he doesn't love you enough.
Brandon and Lizzie come together after being month apart but when they see that Matt has followed her all hell break. Matt has come back to warn her of her beloved boyfriend and when she finds out she can't believe what's she's hearing. When all the lies hit the table Lizzie can't trust no one and vow revenge on the ones who hurt her.

Tormented Heart.... (book3)

In this last tale of What Happens In The Dark Matt, Brandon, and Lizzie is back in their twisted relationship. Lizzie has moved on from the betrayal of the two guys that hurt her the most. When the opportunity for payback comes to her she thinks it's the right time to get her revenge. She feels that everything is going accordingly until her plan is discovered and it's turned on her. This book is an emotional read. It's hurtful to read what Lizzie is going through and how much more destroyed she will be before she gets better.

I read books 1 &2 fairly easy but when it came to this one I was in tears. It's a good series and after you read it your heart will be a little different.

OK. I have to say this. I got to the 30% mark of this book and went and looked up Jade's works. I wanted to see the publish dates of them. Sure enough, this book was published in 2015. It must be one of her earlier works or her first one. I'm not sure. I just know that you would have to have been DAMN PSYCHIC if you read this to know that she was capable of writing The Words which has a pub date of 2022. I mean, her writing improved by leaps and bounds! I honestly couldn't see much resemblance between this one and really any of her others works. The only one that comes close to this is maybe her book "Hate Me." But even that, which was a 2 star read for me (and trust me, I pretty much give 4's and 5's for her works) is also way above this one.

It's not so much that the subject matter is full of...well, violence of every kind I think. I mean, if something is well written, even the gory, violent subject matter is palatable (well, so to speak). But this felt like reading someone’s highschool fanfic. Only, not really because there’s some really awesome fanfic out there that is often better than professionally published works (though I believe Jade is indie published). So maybe make that highschool fanfic by someone failing English comp. The story is disjointed. It jumps from character to character making it hard to tell from one paragraph to another who was speaking. Also, whomever edited this books loved italics. There are so many italicized sentences/paragraphs that at first I thought she was trying to stress some comment or thought…a lot. But I could see nothing that required the italics. They were just there. The characters were also so very one dimensional. It was sophomoric writing at its worst. I had to skim so much of it because I didn’t want to dnf it.

Like I said, reading this you had to be PSYCHIC to know she would go on to write some really great stuff out there. Despite my very great dislike of this book, I have to say I also admire Jade for sticking with writing and doing it. No matter the result, I admire people who write for the love it. And if you get lucky, someone else will love it too.

Five "loved it" stars!

Five "loved it" stars!

Glorious. Loved it. Loved this whole series. The story line was so involved, the characters so fleshed out, that I really can't wrap my head around how this was an early work for this author. Color me impressed. For reals.

This was a serious adventure. The story line spanned over four years (with a three-year gap) during which the experiences of the characters ranged from thrilling highs to soul-crushing lows. There were moments of great victory, and horrible moments that you wish you could un-read, wish you could un-see in your mind (if you visualize books like I do). What Lizzie went through over the course of this series was enough to send most folks into a psychotic break. Truly. I'm not sure I know anyone who could come out the other side of that and be anywhere near normal. But, Lizzie is a survivor. A fighter. And tough as nails. Sadly she NEEDED to be, given the people who surrounded her. The experiences life handed to her.

As the series progressed the lines between the good guys and the bad guys got a bit blurred. They were even smeared in some places. How I felt about some of the characters varied from book to book, sometimes even within a single book. Masterful.

I was really satisfied with the way this series ended. There were some events in the series where belief had to be a bit suspended, but whatever... this is fictional romance. Of COURSE we need to suspend our belief a bit. I think that applies to any romance, to be honest.

I definitely recommend this series to fans of dark romance, erotic thrillers, and romantic suspense. It had elements of all of these woven throughout the series.

Dark

I liked this story. It is a very intense and dark subject matter. You can’t help but want life to work out for Lizzie and Brandon.

The reason I gave it 3 stars is partially because it feels like the writer is immature. And by that I might mean young. I understand the main characters are young and would come off as immature but even when she speaks for the older side characters such as doctors- they come off as immature and not quite as intelligent as they should be.

The other thing is the grammar mistakes and leaving words out. The author clearly doesn’t understand how to use “than” because she uses “then” in every single instance incorrectly. Drove me bonkers. A lot of other punctuational and random words being left out makes for reading confusing sometimes.

Ashley Jade is one of my favorite authors, but this one didn't cut it for me. I saw it was one of her first books and I can tell. It starts of pretty good. But this story just wasn't believable. It was also predictable. Lizzy aggravated me most of the book. Brandon has a serious hero complex and Matt was just plain crazy. Ashley has come a long way way.

Too much

This story was ok, but it was just too dark and too messed up. Almost like the author was intentionally going for shock value. Also grammar and punctuation errors that got frustrating fast.

I was going to lay into this one with specific quotes from the book as examples but then I read the authors note in the blurb about how this is her earlier work.

Since she is aware of how bad this was I will totally give her newer work a shot.

Finding the Light.

This book, just wow.
Lizzie is so broken and just ugh, I can not put this into words. The double life she puts on to keep her family safe.... I wanted to be mad at her at times, but at the same time I knew half of what she was going through, and just to keep that secret is enough to do the stupidest of things. But no matter what all I could think was how strong this girl was, how she could keep herself from going mad.
Matt, he is something else, like I've never read pure and true evil like I did reading him. There was not even a little wiggle room for sympathy or anything with his character. I wanted hI'm to suffer so bad I wanted him to hurt.....
Brandon, I hurt for him! Seeing him try to protect her, wanting to be there for here, not understanding the situation for what it was. Lizzie was so over the moon for him and he her, but because of this monster in their lives they kept pushing and hurting each other.
The writing, the story, the depths of everything in this book was just so amazing.

Book Two.
I can not get enough of this series.
Liz is so timmid and broken, she seems like she's ready to crawl into herself at the start. But at the same time you can feel her strength. She left everything behind to go off and build/grow her life at college. Yet her subconscious keeps pulling her back, and keeping her scared.
Matt, he is something else entirely. I don't know that there are words for this man that does him justice.
Zoe! Best roommate EVER omg I don't even know she is just everything. So much fun and just tries to be there, and she's the kind of human who is so great, yet so oblivious to so much!! She's totally bestfriend material for sure!!
Brandon, Brandon, Brandon, this guy is so much. All he ever wants is to protect Liz, though he goes to far at times, or thinks he knows whats best when he isn't even in the right ballfield.
Though, I mean the twist is pretty awenspiring. And it kind of makes everything come full circle and makes a whole check of a lot of sence really.
Where these characters go...

Book Three.
So lets just jump right in with 3 years later. I mean if you read the prologue from book 2 you know some craziness went down. But getting into this book, I would have never guessed.
Liz has hardened, but i mean what was left for her to do?

My favorite part of book 3 is the duel POV's that it has changed to so we now get into the guys heads and see whats really going on, what they are really going through, feeling, etc.
So, I hurt so bad for Brandon in some ways then I have to remind myself that NO he doesn't deserve that. He lied to her, he did his own minipupating in ways, he had Matt do that to her. He had a part in making Matt what he was, obviously not fully, but he also had a part in Lizzie and how she is... Matt though, its so crazy how different he is and how he comes off.

There is so much going on, so many ups and downs and just SO MUCH! I cried all the emotions, from happy tears, sad tears, mad/angery tears, and all the inbetweens it was crazy. I was constantly bitting my nails and sitting there thinking what in the heck is gonna happen next what more are these characters gonna go through next?! I mean seriously?!

This book, has all the pain, all the emotions, just everything. It hurts so much, but its so riviting you can not help but get to the next page..

Amazing!

I’ve read everything this author has put out... or so I thought. How I missed this series blows my mind!

This author hit it out of the park with this series, I
wanted to throw my phone against the wall so many times. My heart broke and I felt like my chest was being twisted. The anguish and loneliness coming through these pages is insanity.

These characters are intense. I’m not gonna lie.. I was really rooting for the bad guy to turn into an amazing good guy. You know when you watch those movies where it explains why the screwed up villains are the way they are. There was a few chapters where I thought.. Yes this is where that happens. I was for sure things were going a certain. Things never go the way you expect from this author though.

Brandon and Matt have been best friends from the moment they born. They had no choice, they’re parents were best friends. They always did everything together. Then things take a turn.. one day, one choice, one decision, one moment.. will change everything and everyone. Their future will never be what they thought.

Lizzie was the cute nerd that no one really paid attention to. She had her close friends and her parents who ran the diner that the high school kids came to.
She wasn’t exactly what you’d call a boy magnet, the first chapter proves that.

She had plans, she was going to get out of the town and do things with her life. She was going to become more. Then one moment changes all of that. It was all supposed to be a prank. Things weren’t supposed to happen that way. Why did things go that far.

When something happens and someone makes a choice to continue. When you can’t stop.. when you have to have the one person in your life that you can’t. What do you do? What extremes are gonna be taking?

This book killed me! I loved every minute. I had to take breaks and think about what I just read. The book hangover is gonna be strong with this one.

Book 1
What happens in the dark
4*
Lizzie has a crush on Brandon but he's a ball player his best friend is Matt.
Matt is the classic rich boy thinks he's bees knees! He's mean to Lizzie & traps her one day thus causing his obsession!
This is a brilliant start to the story showing the insight into Lizzie Brandon & Matts senior years.
The story does have trigger warnings which I like & respect you are also warned there are more parts to the story so please do not expect the full ending.
I've already one clicked the rest of the books!
Ps be prepared I read this within 3 hrs it draws you in as Ashley jade is good at doing.
Obsessed men.

Book 2 -

Always comes to light. (WHITD BK2
5*
Lizzie, Brandon & Matt have all gone their separate ways to college etc.
Lizzie is finally getting it together her new room mate is Zoe who makes it her mission to take Lizzie under her wing she knows she has a past but not the extent of her hurt. Just as she's starting to feel safe the past pain has caught up.
Another brilliant book I couldn't put it down the story draws you in again straight from page one to the end leaving you desperate for more luckily part 3 is already on my kindle.
A definite must read this story will stay with me for along time.
Secrets & deception

I don’t think I have ever read a book in which I had such extreme emotions. There was fear, lust, hope, love, forgiveness, hate and everything in between. I feel like my emotions were on the spin cycle while reading this book. That is how often they transformed from one emotion to another. I simply couldn’t put the book down wanting to know how this would end.

You will never guess what Ashley Jade has in store for you as the reader. I have read all her books, and I have learned to not even try. Just sit back and enjoy the journey. That is exactly what I did while reading ‘What Happens in the Dark.’ I was blown away by the richness of the plot and the characters. I loved Brandon, Lizzie and Zoe. They were such incredible characters especially Lizzie. Many would break from the trauma she endured, but we received a strong, fierce, resilient warrior with such a pure heart. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Matt as he was central to this story. There was a brief moment that I started to like him, and then it dissolved into hate once more. He is truly the most vile character that I have ever read.

This was the first book written by Ashley Jade, and I am left speechless after reading it. I truly felt so many intense emotions, and could never guess what was coming next. I knew to expect this from her other works, but this isn’t a developed talent. It is a gift! She has a talent for weaving words that leave you gasping. Make sure you read this page-turner as you won’t be disappointed.

There are not enough words for me to describe how much I loved this book. It’s not your typical boy meets girl they fall in love and get married the end. I love that it broke the mold of tour typical cookie cutter romance books. Ithe story of Brandon Lizzie and Matt and tangled webs of lies they have each interwoven to create this incredible journey is breathtaking. Lizzie is fearless and honestly most women should be like her especially in the situations she found herself in it’s not easy to get yourself out of but she persevered. Brandon is hard to explain you want to root for him yet you have this feeling in the back of your mind he’s not all he says he is but in the end he’s the guy you hope you find one day. Matt Star is your typical holier than thou better than the world rich jock who thinks everything should be given to him and if it’s not he will just take it and that’s exactly what he did . He’s the villain you hate and spend half the time trying to figure out his real motives. I have read many books by Ashley Jade but this by far has been the best book for me personally .

dark and powerful

This is 3 books in 1 following the traumatic story of Lizzie. Book 1 starts with Lizzie in highschool, she’s a quiet nerdy girl with barely any sexual experience. One day she is dragged into the bathroom by some of the football team and Matt the QB rapes her. Dominic who is Matt’s best friend helps Lizzie. What happens next is Matt becomes obsessed with Lizzie and blackmails her into sleeping with him. She has a connection with Dominic but he cant understand why she wants Matt. Really good read.

Book 2 is when Lizzie moves to college. She has gotten away from Matt and is trying to rebuild her life the best way she can. This was really gripping.

Book 3 was the darkest of the lot of them. I loved Matt then felt sorry for him then hated him. At times i thought the writing was a little childish especially around the part where Matt goes to the specialist about his brain but it got better and towards the end i sobbed my heart out for Dominic.

What did I just read?!

I am an avid book reader. I read all genres and I was really excited to read this book well the series. The 1st book was a little traumatizing but it was overall good and it was all downhill from there. I read some traumatizing books but this was a little insane for my tastes. A lot of things didn't make sense Like in the end and spoil alerts before you keep reading. No Rape victim that was held captive for 8 months and brutal beatings and sexual assault and drowning's are they gonna be okay after 30 days and start having sex again that's just not in the realm of possibility I really tried to like the main character However there were just so many things about her and her decisions that didn't make sense for someone who invented what she had been through this was definitely a swing in a mess and a complete waste of 10 hours of my life.

Bring your tissues!

May Contain spoilers!
Wow. This is one incredible story. Some of the relationships are under developed and confusing (Miranda). There are oddities (her parents relationship with her and each other). There are some other issues, such as grammatical mistakes, weird wording and double chapters, but if you can look over all of that and focus on the story instead of the issues, it’s outstanding. In the beginning of the story, I could not stand Lizzy. She was rude and impatient with everyone, even her best friends. But as she endures more and more evil in her life, we get to see the beauty beyond the wall. There are some twists and turns that truly shocked me!! Bring the tissues and be prepared to feel a range of emotions, but I think this is one story you won’t forget!

Gut wrenching

I’m not sure how Ashley Jade manages to keep sane. She writes brilliantly and can pull so many emotions from you it’s scary at times. This series had tons of dark elements that a lot of people would shy away from when reading much less voluntarily write about. She manages to weave a twisted web of lies, deceit, manipulation and love. She is a master at her game and will remain on my buy now list...I don’t even have to read the blurb to know she’s going to serve me up a heaping plate of “what the heck” and “oh NO she didn’t!” Brilliant is all I can say! She put Lizzie through hell but gave her the HEA in the end. If you are on the fence about buying DO IT! She does not disappoint.

So much emotional angst

An absolutely epic story. It was very dark but it did have a happily ever after ending so phew for that. I loved how tenacious the fmc was and I loved her best friend and the relationship they had. It would have been nice for Matt to have been sent to jail, death was to good for him. I loved the third most as there was something endearing at the way the end was nurtured by her husband. It makes you realise how one mistake not only changes your life but has the potential to change many. I'm not convinced I could have forgiven the mmc. All in all it was a page Turner that had me completely gripped. Well done, lovely writing style though there were a few spelling mistakes choose/chose etc that however would be my only criticism

I thought I had read everything by Ashley Jade. But I noticed some posts/comments on her Faceb page referring to this series, so, of course, I had to come check it out!

WOW!! This is not an easy series to review without giving away spoilers. I will say it has dark elements. It has triggering elements. It has, unfortunately, real life elements.

Lizzie. Unless you've been in her situation, you can never understand what happens. I don't even understand it. But you feel for her. You relate to her.

Matt and Brandon...I can't detail them without giving it away, so, in all honesty, I'm not even going to try.

And the twists that Ashley throws in...I definitely didn't see them coming!

Heed the triggers warnings, but don't pass up reading this if you have a chance!

I've never left a review for a book before, but I felt I needed to with this book in particular. Or rather the series. I was not disappointed in the least. The author clearly states the book isn't edited and she doesn't consider this as a reflection of her current work. With all that being said, the book was still amazing. The storyline had me in tears, but also moments of swoon and laughter. It was dark, very dark. But it wasn't done in a way that wasn't necessary to the plot. It all tied together to make it a great book. Was there errors? Yeah. But it didn't take away from the plot. I easily looked past them. Go into this book with an open mind. If you do, I think you'll enjoy Lizzie and Brandon's love story as much as I did.

A deluge of darkness…
Ashley Jade has a unique way of bringing her characters to life and making you feel every conceivable emotion while delving into this dark tale.
Lizzie, Brandon, and Matt venture through ups and downs, twists and turns, emotional turmoil, and you can’t help but be swept up and brought along for the ride. The darkness is heightened as the story unfolds, to the point where you’re not sure if these characters are going to survive their journey. It keeps you on your toes until the very end. Their struggles eventually make them stronger and love carries them through.
I’ve yet to be disappointed with one of Ashley Jade’s books. Pick up this series, you won't regret it!

Sorry but I was disappointed

I read one other book from this author and enjoyed it so I started this book/series with the same expectation. I was sadly disappointed. You know the feeling when you watch a movie, regret it and wish you could get the time back? Multiply that by ten and that's my feeling about this book! The three main characters are all selfish narcissistic people. The plot was extremely far fetched and definitely lacks any regard for the study of psychology or true human nature. Yes I get this is a fictional story but it's needs to be somewhat believable to get into the characters and story line. I wouldn't recommend this book.

It was okay but kind of frustrating

First of all wow that was a lot to read second Lizzie for a girl that was supposedly so smart god she was ignorant! After all the hell she went through at the hands of Matt she thought it would be a splendid idea to get her revenge since he had recently come out of a coma and had permanent memory loss yeah cause like they wouldn't call it permanent memory loss if it was real right??? Ugh I so badly wanted to smack that heffer upside the head. Anyways I would say if you're a KU subscriber check it out but if I had to pay for it I wouldn't do it

What Happens In The Dark Is... Wow!

I am so overwhelmed with emotions. This story was... wow! I was hooked from Chapter one and did not want to place the Kindle down. I was on one emotional rollercoaster ride. I laughed, I cried and felt the angst and disgust, but most importantly I fell in love with the characters. I am such a huge fan of AshleyJade. Her storytelling is ABSOLUTELY amazing. The book is so well-written that I feel I am in the storyline watching the action. I will HIGHLY recommend this book to my friends and family members.

I'm speechless at how I am transported into Lizzie's world. Every thought and feeling was as if it were my own. From The start I couldn't put this series down. And not only did I feel her emotions but I also felt like I was getting into the mind of the male characters as well. It earned all 5 stars with every word. If you like a book that tears your heart out smashes it into a million pieces while making you ask for more and then puts all those pieces back together again go one-click this series now.

what happens in the dark

I know a lot of people reviewed that the grammatical errors made this hard to read. I didnt feel that way at all. The story kept me hooked from page one until the very end! This does have a lot of really dark parts that involve rape so if that is something that is a touchy subject for you then abort situation! Overall do I agree with Lizzie’s choices no but that’s not what reading a book like these are about. So for the people criticizing it for that like get over it.

Too much explaining going on

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I think the main reason was that instead of just showing or being able to show thru the story things that had happened, there were long drawn out narratives of what happened and why. Could be this author is new to writing and didn’t know how to get the info out there with out doing this. I will probably try to read another book from this author but a more recent one to see if the writing style has improved.

Rollercoaster Ride!!!

All I can say is ‘Whoa!’ This series was insane and I absolutely couldn’t put it down! Lizzie went through so much...and even when you think all is lost for her, the H’s love (I won’t say who...no spoilers) manages to get her through. Be warned...this is definitely a dark read...and I do have to say Lizzie did have some TSTL moments when not communicating what was really going on or reaching out for help. Despite that...this was a page turner and gripped you throughout! I highly recommend!!
