Another wonderful installment in this very underhyped series! Magic, heart, whimsy, and some heavier topics too, just like the other books.

Also, this installment featured sewing magic and a (possibly magical) cat companion, so I loved that!

A szerző most sem tétlenkedett, a történet varázslatos és tanulságos.

A charming read that takes the reader into the beautiful canals of old world venice. This a story of magic, talking cats and one girl’s determination to conquer her fears in order to save her father. A lovely tale from beginning to end.

When tragedy strikes Colette’s home, she is saved from servitude by a man she believed long dead. Her father, a famous mask maker and magician. Now Colette knows why her sewing comes alive. Why her embroidery moves and dances. Magic is in her blood.

But when her father is ordered to make a mask with powers of persuasion, the magic consumes him. Now with the mask controlling her father, Colette must fight to free him of the magic… before it gets her father killed for treason.

This was such a lovely story. A mix of history and fantasy, the author Holly Webb paints such a vivd picture of a thriving Venice. She opens with Colette’s life, showing the reader the hard work the poorer class did just to survive. This makes the reader feel instant sympathy for Colette, and we are moved by her plight when her world crumbles around her.

Colette herself is a sweet heroine. Practical and brave, with just a pinch of mischief that lets her break the rules. I liked her straightaway. Max, her talking cat, also adds much humour to the story and is a great friend to Colette.

I also like the historical details woven throughout out story. Nothing to telling, but just small facts and descriptions woven in here and there that helped bring the world to life.

In terms of plot, the story jogs along at a nice pace. Bumps of action, a few paces of character reflection, a stretch of intrigue. All of which lead to a very satisfying conclusion. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing this series!

History spiced with magic, this is a book I think girls under twelve would really enjoy. 3.5 stars!

I read this book in one delicious gulp, over the course of a day, and it was utterly enchanting - the most genuinely magical MG fantasy I've read in a while. Set in a version of historical Venice full of water horses, bespelled (and often very creepy!) masks and cats who work as spies, it's just so lovely and so much fun - and the heroine is WONDERFUL. Colette is full of quiet strength, courage and compassion, whether she's struggling with the unruly magic that she can't yet control, trying to take care of her own mother, or fighting the menace of a truly scary mask that threatens to take away the only family she has left.

This is officially Book 3 in the Magical Venice series, but each of the books is designed to stand alone, with (I think) different main characters in each. I hadn't read either of the first two books in the series before reading this, and I enjoyed every moment of it - I think this book is a great place to start! However, I have ordered both of the first two books now because I loved this one so much. The setting is fabulous, and I can't wait to read more books in this world!

Suggestible for a light-Italian flavored magical, middle grade adventure.

A delightful read, though a bit more rushed than the previous two volumes of the serious. Max, of course was my favourite 😺😺😺

tbh ta mi się najbardziej spodobała z tych trzech
(mała ja zrobiła jej dnf)
fabuła tutaj najbardziej przypadła mi do gustu, chociaż motyw magii najbardziej podobał mi się w pierwszej części

This was rather enchanting read for me. The story was interesting as well as the characters and of coarse the setting of a magic filled Venice.

The plot for the book was a little darker than I expected with a death of a character and some 'dark' magic being used. But the way the book was written definitely helped incorporate that tone into the story.
One thing a will say is that I didn't realise this was the third book, so the description of some characters that were in the previous book ended up being lacking for that very reason but other than that I was able to enjoy the story even without reading the others.

Characters were a little hard to follow at the begging it was just a simple these are the nice people and these people will use you for their own agenda. But after about half way most of the beginning characters never appeared again and the newer ones were much more developed which was much easier to enjoy.
Colette was a little hard to connect with overall but I was able to get used to her. Although it took till the last few pages for me to start liking her. But I mostly didn't like the characters but I was still able to enjoy the story nonetheless.

This book is enjoyable and even with a few references to past books its an excellent read as a stand-alone book.

I hadn't realised that this was part of a series. I believe that the majority of characters are new, but the setting (and therefore a few figures like the duchess) is the same in each book. Because this isn't the first one, there was very little focus on the worldbuilding, and at first I was a little bewildered -- the book took it as read that I knew this Venice was magical and so on, whereas in reality I was mostly going in blind.

Once I got the hang of what was happening, this is an engaging enough little story, but it's very short and simplistic in a way that makes it clear it's aimed at younger readers. (The main character is ten although again, this isn't clear for some time.) I felt some of it was underdeveloped -- I'd have liked to see more of the character learning to use her magic, but Webb mostly skipped the learning process.

The magic system itself seemed very cool: magical clothing is an intriguing idea. However, I didn't have a clear sense of how it worked or what the limits of that magic were, and I would have liked to, because instead I was faced with a character who went from ignorance to massively creative spells in the space of a few chapters, and I didn't even know if that was plausible within the worldbuilding. Again, not the first book and also aimed at kids, so I could be missing something and/or expecting too much, but it was something I noticed.

I liked the cats, though.
