After years on the run, Pierce Landcross is ready to leave Europe altogether and start a new life with his family and his soulmate, Taisia. The plan to flee, however, is postponed the instant his estranged older brother, Joaquin shows up! Joaquin has fallen seriously ill, and the only way to save him is for Pierce and Taisia to travel with him to Scotland and locate a certain demon with the power to take back what belongs to it. But, first, they need to seek out the creature’s owner—an illegal whisky brewer named Coira MacCrum. For Coira, their arrival couldn’t have come at a better time. She makes a bargain with Joaquin. To see the demon, he must first retrieve a special item stolen from her by an infamous organization. The Hellfire Club.

Another splendid book from this talented Author. Michelle E. Lowe certainly knows how to write an interesting and captivating story. It’s full of great characters that are quite diverse, and it has an Interesting plot to top it off. This is the third book in the series, and they are all well worth a read. Tementis may have given birth to a son, but she had no intention of keeping it. She wasn’t planning on falling pregnant when she agreed to sleep with the Trickster Jack Pack, however when he offered ownership of the slave demon Thooranu for a year, it was too irresistible to pass up on. Luckily for Tementis’s baby that Thooranu decided to hand it off to a human to look after, and not just discard it. Joaquin Landcross was lucky that Pierce had got in contact with their grandmother Elie Fey, especially since he seemed to be dying of something. Now that she had her powers back, Grandmother Fey may have a chance of saving Joaquin. Pierce is now on his guard that his brother has returned, especially since he had already tried to kill him in the past. He still can’t understand what he did, to make Joaquin want to end his life. The irony of it now is that Pierce is going to travel to Scotland to try and save his brother’s life. There wasn’t a part of this story that I didn’t enjoy. Easily worth the 5-star rating.
I absolutely love when moving parts from different books finally come together and you are able to have that holy shit moment. Especially when the pieces of the puzzle are things that you thought were so inconsequential at the time.
Plot: We finally find out the truth about Joaquin's motivations for what happened between him and Pierce, the reason why he did what he did and that there's an answer to fix it. So Pierce, Taisia, and Joaquin set out to find the fix they're looking for and have plenty of adventures along the way. There are fairies, vampires, secret societies, demons, gods, and a Demon King. We get to see the romance between Pierce and Taisia evolve and I might, might have gotten a little emotional at one point. Or three. Whatever.
I love the prologues in these books, they are written in such a different tone than the rest of the book, but you just know they are connected somehow. The prologue in this book tied so much of it together and it was bloody brilliant.
If I'm being honest, I have to say this was probably my least favorite of the three books so far. Not that wasn't a great book, it was, (my rating reflects this) but even in a series of fantastic books, you have favorites. This one wasn't mine. It was darker than the previous two, with less of the trademark wit and humor that I enjoy so much about this series. Perhaps the absence of the adorable Clover has something to do with it. This book is centered around the relationship between the Landcross brothers and needless to say, they don't really get along. Pierce, understandably, holds Joaquin responsible for the things he's done and so their journey together is filled with a lot of tension and mistrust. There isn't a whole lot of time for witty banter and hijinks, instead, it's more along the lines of human sacrifice, ritualistic orgies, and demons. You know, the less fluffy stuff. It made sense to the plot, but it wasn't necessarily fun stuff to read. The writing is still top notch and the larger picture of the plot is coming together really well. It's fun to realize that things that happened in the first book are affecting the plot.
I really enjoyed the way Pierce and Taisia's relationship evolved. There is something incredibly romantic about how thankful he is for just having her in his life. He's just...so in love. I especially appreciated the lack of a love triangle between the Landcross brothers and Tiasia. It would have been easy to do and it would have pissed me off. Joaquin might envy the ease of his brother's relationship, but the line was never crossed.
All in all, I still loved this book. It was a wonderful addition to the series, despite the fact that it wasn't my favorite. I'm looking forward to the next book.
*I received a free copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. And while I'm on that subject, I'd like to add that the fact that it took me two-plus months to finish the book is no reflection on the book's quality. I've been horribly sick and up until recently, I'd been reading books without reviewing, putting books I knew I needed to review off until I felt better.

If it’s high-jinx and adventure with a bit of supernatural you’re looking for The Underground (Legacy, Book 3) by Michelle Lowe is just the answer. While this has been a most interesting and enjoyable series of books, Michelle wrote them in such a way that each could most certainly be read as a standalone book; as each book is a whole and entirely new adventure. Each new installment introduces even more captivating and intriguing characters and plots. That being said, you will get the most benefit out of the stories by reading all of them. In this installment the rapscallion Landcross brothers must put aside their differences and dislike for each other and set out on an adventure to find the Demon King. Along the way they are met with and come across secret societies, demons, witches, fairies, vampires and various other rogue and despicable characters. It really is a quite exciting and fun read. The pace is fast and action packed - with twist and turn galore. Great characters and a well written and intriguing story, which is becoming the norm for any of Michelle’s books. Tinged with mystery, steampunk, paranormal and adventure it’s the perfect adventure and a wonderful read. I am looking forward to the next installment and the next adventures of this band of misfits and scoundrels. Highly recommend….loved it!

About the author: A Georgia born native, I've spent most my life near the Atlanta area before pulling up stakes and moving clear across the country with husband, Ben, and our two daughters. History piques my interests, especially European history. I'm a big nerd at heart. I read science-fiction and fantasy stories, and I love old B horror films. I also get a kick out of playing classic Atari video games, and I do oil painting as a hobby.
Other books by Michelle Lowe: Legacy, Legacy: The Reunion, Legacy: The Warning, Atlantic Pyramid, The Hex Hunt Volume 1, Spine Shivering Stories, Poe’s Haunted House Tour, Cherished Thief, The Hex Hunt: The Island of the Sleeping Volcano, The Hex Hunt: Surviving the Sea.
I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
That cliffhanger! I just can’t. I refuse to believe that, that was the end of this book. But on the bright side, it sounds like there may be a 4th book in the series? Okay I’ll try to write a coherent review but I’m struggling because of that ending… So Legacy the Underground picks right back up where we left off in Legacy the Reunion. Everything makes more sense now! I feel like we have come full circle and all of the prologues finally make sense to me. After a brief prologue, the book starts with Pierce’s estranged brother, Joaquin, making a reappearance. As you may know, Pierce and Joaquin have a tenuous relationship after Joaquin turned on Pierce and attempted to kill him. We learn more about his motives and find out that there is something wrong with Joaquin but luckily there is a cure. The first part of the book focuses on the journey between Pierce, Joaquin, and Taisia to find this cure. The trio does run into some trouble along the way but for the most part they arrive quickly and safely. Of course things are never as simple as we hope for them to be. Even when the trio finds the cure, there are added steps they need to take before the owner of the cure will let them have it. This takes our group on yet another mini adventure which in my opinion, is the best part of the book. There are demons, witches, and cults which provide extra excitement and intrigue. Although Pierce still is a prevalent character in the story, the focus is more on Joaquin and his story. I enjoyed seeing Pierce and Joaquin together and reading about their interactions. You couldn’t help but root for them and nail bitingly turn the pages when there are many close calls on their lives. The second half of the book is definitely the strongest. Michelle Lowe’s writing is so impressive her words captivate you and her descriptions are so lush and pull you right into the story. The ending is bittersweet because there is a mix of happy but also sad events. There is still much to discover about Pierce’s history and why an attempt on his life was made and what it means that he is “one of the four.” Can’t wait to see where the story goes!
I received this book in exchange for a honest review. This is the 3rd book I've read by the author and the 3rd book I've read in this series. I've really enjoyed this series and continue to look forward to the release of future books.
I love these characters and while the main characters remain the same this book is darker and more serious than the previous one. This change in tenor was impressive as the characters didn't lose the things that made me love them in the first place. There is still an underlying humor and there is a fair amount of adventure, but the main part of the story reminds us that people and their motivations are, often, more complex than we think they are. This book tries a number of loose ends and plot lines from the previous books together. I can wait to see what happens next.
Much as I hate doing it, I read this book out of order, and I loved it anyway. I definitely recommend reading a series in order because it keeps the backstory moving along with greater consistency. Orderly reading also allows you to watch the author develop the story and the characters. Although none of the books in the Legacy series can be considered stand-alone novels, the way the life of Pierce Landcross is presented allows deviation without much penalty.
There is no doubt that I am a fan. I look forward to the next Legacy book with anticipation. I attribute this to great storytelling and believable character development within the sci-fi/fantasy steampunk world Michelle Lowe has created. Suspension of disbelief is the goal of any fantasist. When a supernatural creature is acceptable is one thing. When that same being seems ordinary… that takes talent.
When I am reading a good story, I really hate for the book to end. This is more true today than it ever has been for me. I find myself seeking escape from an increasingly insane world. The Legacy series is great at providing that escape. I so look forward to reading the rest of the series.
I got a review copy of the first in this series (Legacy), after seeing in the description "Steampunk, Fantasy". I did not think it had much of either, but the author told me that she added more as the series progressed. So I continued reading. This, I got a review copy of the first in this series (Legacy), after seeing in the description "Steampunk, Fantasy". I did not think it had much of either, but the author told me that she added more as the series progressed. So I continue reading. This, the third entry in the Pierce Landcross saga certainly has more fantasy...ramped up an order of magnitude... and the beginnings of steampunk. Though set in early Victorian England (and Europe), what would be anachronistic in our same period (photographs, common electric lamps, typewriters) are part of this world, and given the interactions of the characters, not uncommon, as laboratory experimentals would probably be. So a bit of different fantasy. There is more of a romance element as well.
I did mark a couple of interactions as somewhat implausible to me - the main character is too young to have some of the worldly perspectives/wisdom he speaks. I understand that he and his brother we mostly on their own from an early age, and were taken under the wing of an eccentric inventor for a while, but I think that would engender an expected street savviness and not the wisdom of a much older man. And I thought a couple more were inconsistent with the character as yet developed. Of course, I am a reader and not a writer and I suspect more will be revealed in the next three books. I have to clear a couple of others and two ARCs but look forward to the next in the series.the third entry in the Pierce Landcross saga certainly has more fantasy
Another fantastic read from Michelle Lowe! This is the third book in the Legacy series. A lot of things are starting to come together. Some of those mysteries are resolved. We are seeing more of the Landcross brothers' backstory. Now that Pierce has saved his Mum, Dad and Grandmother, he needs to save his brother. He's still haunted by the time his brother tried to kill him. While he knows it is not Joaquin's fault, it is still terrifying. With Grandmother Fey's help he knows how to save him. All it's going to take is tracking down a demon who happens to be the property of an illegal whiskey brewer Coira (she's scarier than that sounded). Oh and vampires, a Hell Fire Club, fairies and a Demon King. No sweat, right?
This one does focus more on Joaquin and I'm really glad the brothers had a change to mend things. A bittersweet moment is still sweet. Kaisia is right there by her man as well. Still gorgeous and funny and fierce. I love how their relationship has grown. Then just as things are working out and settling down, WhAm! One of the Four? What the heck is that? Curtain falls. *sigh* Thankfully, the author let me have the next book before I had a heart attack.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
If you liked the first two books in this series, then you are bound to love this one too. The saga continues. As unusual, it's all incredible and implausible, but great fun to read. Recommended reading for fantasy fans.
