Simón Bolívar truly earned his nickname “The Liberator” for a large portion of South American people. He was a forward-thinking political figure at a time when Spain was ruling over the region that is now comprised of Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia. Inside you will read about... ✓ A Difficult Childhood ✓ The Independence Movement Takes Off ✓ Exile in Jamaica ✓ The Impossible Climb ✓ Civil War and Assassination Attempts And much more! Bolívar’s revolutionary thoughts and belief system are what gave so many who lived in that part of the continent their independence and the freedom to enact their own governments with their own laws. Few people in history have achievements that can rival the ones made by this hero of the Latin American people. The world was forever changed by the perseverance of one man, Símon Bolívar.
Another brief straight forward account of an historical character. This time Simón Bolivar (1783-1830), the so-called liberator of Gran Colombia, today separate countries known as Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Perú, Panamá and Ecuador from the yoke of the Spanish rule. His inspiration came from the American Revolutionary War, from which he also took the idea of the abolition of slavery.
Some very interesting facts that I didn’t know about. But the book presents an unflawed leader, all virtues and no sins, and I very much doubt that this is a serious portrait. It seems entirely dedicated to those living in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, to the likes of Chávez and Maduro. Maybe it lacks a bit of digging. If so, you should probably try to find it elsewhere. If Bolivar came back from the dead today, would he find what South America has achieved up to these days to his liking? I sincerely don’t think so. Hunger and calamities to no end. What about political corruption and crime, Venezuela being one of the most murderous places in Earth? And they still call themselves “Bolivarian”?
Anyway, another good addition to the “Hourly History” series.
Very rarely do you find a country named after an individual. Simon Bolivar was one such rare person who had the distinction of bringing independence to a number of countries in the 19th century on Latin America. Hourly History does justice to this historic figure.
Simon Bolivar was an incredibly important person in South America. He helped his own country, Venezuela, earn independence. He is also credited with creating several states: Ecuador, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, and Columbia. Bolivar was unique because he didn't see individual states, he saw unified countries that were part of alliances.
This book satisfied my interest in this South American liberator. However, it didn't offer much more. I thought the quotes offered at the opening of each chapter to be 'revolution 101' and didn't really get to the gist of the man. Perhaps I am not being fair. Bolivar seemed to be single-focused on the liberation of South American countries. With such a short lifespan, maybe he never let his focus veer from the revolution. 3.5 stars
I found it interesting that he favored the British Parliamentary form of government with royalist and commons house. Verses the American representative. It seems that he was a preferred a fascist monarchy dictatorship rather than a republic with representative governance.
a good introduction to Bolivar life and times, but feel it is incomplete , as it is too short for my taste, I wish the book was much longer, as much detail of the battles frought by Bolivar are missing.
It is unfortunate that we in the US are not as knowledgeable about the history of our neighbors. This book gives a quick glimpse into a man known as the George Washington of South America.
This is a good book with some genuine historical informations about Latin America. I got to know a lot about Bolivar. I loved to read this book as fast as I could.
Un personaje sin parangon en la historia, un soñador y un visionario comprometido con sus ideales. Un hombre adelantado a su tiempo y con un noble corazon. Un relato excelente.
A short concise glimpse into the life & times of Simon Bolivar. Truly a giant in South American liberation history. This book whets the appetite into the life of this historical hero of South America.
