The Wild Hunt. Six disparate Fae warriors on the chase. An unruly, desperate target with weapons beyond teeth and claws who will give them the fight of their lives. That’s me. I had been drowning with my head above water when they dragged me kicking and screaming to be reborn in their world. My razor wit couldn’t cut them. My fleet feet couldn’t outrun them. They stripped my glamour and peeled away the shadows hiding me. Now, I had no escape from their famished stares. Eloden burns to touch me. Orin mesmerizes my mind. Falin nibbles at my control. Aeric tempts me to take a sweet, forbidden taste. Kheelan chips at my frozen heart. And Dain binds them in darkness come to claim nothing less than my soul. I have to resist. If I keep my head down, shuffle along and never look ahead, then I can blend back in with the herd. Eventually, the colour will bleed from the skies until my grey world is safe again. I won’t remember what it was like to dream my hopes or miss the promise in a kiss. There are no happy endings. Damnation is my ever after.
This is 2.5 stars that I rounded up. I initially dnf at 14% because I was frustrated that I didn’t really understand yet what was going on with the MC in terms of her understanding of magic and relationship to the Chinese family. Once I accepted that I didn’t know what was going on, I started to enjoy it. Btw, I still don’t really know how the MC got involved with that family in the first place.
I enjoyed some things about this—namely, Falin. I adore Falin, and he seems to be bisexual, so I’m hoping for some mm in the next book. I hate step-sibling romances, so this relationship better stay familial, but I absolutely loved the MC’s relationship with her brothers.
Unfortunately, I disliked many things about this book: • I thought it was weird that MC told one of the guys to use her brothers’ name for her. • The MC doesn’t really choose her harem; they just tell her that they are her best option. • The MC needs to stop biting people ffs, especially after they tell her what it means. I absolutely hated that she added Loren to her harem (seemingly, if not there was Other Man nonsense). • I hate the dynamic in this harem. All the guys ignore what she says and what she’s comfortable with and love to throw her over their shoulders and do whatever they want, like taking her clothes off without her permission or tying her up and groping her without her permission. I am also seriously not a fan of all the spankings or how Orin asks her to call him “master.” • I never really understood what disease the MC is worried about. I felt like I’d be more worried for her if I knew what to expect. • I’m very unclear how this harem ended up together in the first place, as they clearly don’t know some very important things about each other. • I didn’t understand pretty much the entire last quarter of the book.
I honestly wanted to like this book. I very much liked some of the interactions and personality of the men. Yet, the whole time I was reading I felt as lost as Evie. There are a lot of things mentioned but not explained in detail. One of the best examples of this is the genetic disorder that plagues Evie, and her mother. I couldn't decide if the author didn't name the disorder because they didn't want to do the research or made up the disease and wanted to leave it as mysterious. If mystery was the objective, it only came off as obnoxious.
It also bothered me that many times the men would tell Evie that they would explain something to her later, yet later never came. I could forgive the high handed commands not to do something as it fit with the men's personalities; like the no biting rule. But, the overall lack of explanations came off as irritating and feeling of lost plot points. The few times an answer was given in passing, such as why Evie shouldn't bite felt glossed over as if not as important as it was made out to be.
All of this made the book obnoxious but tolerable. Something I would have given 2-stars to and never read again. But the ending made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I've read the last few pages over and over again and honestly can't understand Evie's reasoning for what she did. Evie's reaction seemed so far over the top I can't even begin to understand what was going though her mind. Which is asinine since this novel is in first person. This whole scene feels like a major thought or information was overlooked, not explained properly or never actually written down and makes the end of the book make no sense. The cliffhanger wasn't even as bad as this missing information.
I'm actually really pleasantly surprised with this one. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, especially considering how awful the cover is. While it's not the most well-written or unique piece, it was gripping enough that I finished it in two sittings. I really liked the main character. She's very much a 'black cat' personality. I do wish there was a little less instalust so that the relationships could have been formed with more substance, but the banter really makes up for a lot of the weak points. I love how prickly the FL is and how she wants to learn to protect herself. 3.5/4
A great start. Eve (the MFC) is an everyday, easy-going girl but a bit of an outsider and loner. Although things change when six fae warriors - Dain, Aeric, Orin, Eloden, Fallin and Kheelan barge into her life and turn it upside down. Bringing with them plenty of sex, spanking and a little bit of violence. I really liked this book. Eve, her family especially her twin brothers (hot!) and the guys are all great characters (Even if the guys did annoy me by how they bullied Eve with sex (even if those scenarios were smoking hot!!!) I mean by using it against her to get their own way. I wanted Eve to give back as much as she got) I do understand the reason why she didn't but it would less one-sided to me if she had. Saying that by the end (and what an ending that was!) i finally saw a spark of a stronger Eve emerging. That i hope will continue in the next part?
One minute she's standing up for herself, next she's a pathetic mewling pawn with no willpower. I kept waiting for the moment when she would be strong for more than a milisecond. Didn't happen. This book had so much potential, but the guys were abusive while calling it seduction (she says no, they don't care). Very disappointing. I did read it all despite my disgust at all of the characters, her included - she started out with a fear of going out or being touched or noticed yet the moment they turn up she's cured? Rubbish. Also was no explanation for that part of her life.
I’m not quite sure where to go with this one. It’s good - but confusing. The FMC is both strong yet weak, a force with her own rules yet easily subdued into the Fae traditions she knows nothing about. I’m not really sure how I feel about it.
Pros: - Inventive - Intriguing Characters - Hot
Cons: - Dubcon, trigger warning noted. - FMC actions are scattered. - Is events progress incredibly fast. - ends on a sucker punch that still feels baffling.
This was the most confusing book that I’ve ever attempted to read. Even from the first paragraph of the book, I was confused. It’s like the author provided us with 60% of the book, while the other 40% was still in her head. Absolutely nothing that the main character did made any sense. I couldn’t even make it past the third chapter.
Usually when the MC meets a love interest and she's suspicious I wait for the misunderstanding to unfold, and for trust to build. Till the end of the book the entire harem was suspicious. They didn't have a good first impression either. I knew they were part of the harem, but was honestly like
They were super invasive, and took over Eve's life. Part of me kept thinking about that Ludacris song with the way they took over her entire space. She went out of her way to avoid them, but she couldn't because they were everywhere she turn. They made no real initiative to get to know her, but were controlling and restrictive.
I supported Eve keeping them out her life. They literally told her nothing under the whole "you're not ready to know" bs, but expected her to completely trust them. Dain controlled the harem, and called the shots. Therefore, Dain controlled Eve to a certain extent.
"...but Dain said"
Eve was actually scared of him, which is weird cause he led the harem, but logical because he was never particularly nice to her.
All the other harem members obeyed him, and it was a little annoying. Eve wasn't perfect either. She was kind of rude. She mentioned a need to remain in the background, but it was never explained. I would have immediately called the police on Dain and his little entourage, but Eve didn't because it would cause a scene. Her extreme efforts to go unnoticed was never accounted for.
The ending was a bit confusing. I knew what was happening, but not why. Surprisingly, a**hole Falin was my fave.
I'm complaining, but I enjoyed reading this book. I never got bored or lost interest.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I loved this book. I loved the push and pull between the main character and the leading Fae. They frustrated me yet drew me deeper into the story. It is magical, violent, sexual, and with multiple mysteries and self discovery on every page. The story has suspense and never fully reveals the true extent of each of the characters. As it will be a continuing series, we do not get all the answers in this one book. In fact, it lasts the ground work for the future yet leaves it wholly open to interpretation. I can't claim to understand the full extent of treachery, but, like the title suggests, this isn't a happy fairy tale. At least not at first. The characters are not sweet, yet they show promising hints of sweetness. I enjoy a story that challenges me and my discomfort and this story represents that to me. Do not read if you are uncomfortable with the dark, or fantasy, or frustration. If you are looking for a sweet romance, this is not the book for you. However, if you appreciate complex characters, the slow reveal of layers, if you can look beyond traditional roles of good v. evil, then this is exactly the book for you. If you like a bit of thinking with your story, if you can look beyond the limited scope of your own perspective, read this book. It has everything, action, dark romance, fantasy and a little dirty for those of us who appreciate books that don't shy away from all aspects of an RH. I am so looking forward to reading the next installment as we've only begun to scratch the surface of this wicked fae world.
It was good until the herione lost her back bone, it was saved by the ending.
I was still on a high from Mercedes Maeren series when I read this book of hers. So it just didn't have the same oomph as her other series. The storyline was amazing. There is such a rich story with a well thought out world and characters.
Okay, so this books starts out really good with the FMC being more than a loner and actually having an impairement to interacting with people but she is presented as this strong, independent and funky women. Then all these Fae guys get introduced she kind of just loses her back bone. She takes everything at face value, doesn't research anything that needs it. And even though they keep tricking her, she keeps going back and getting hurt, when they betray her again and again. This just made me think about my next book to read and kind of put me off this one.
The ending was this books saving grace, where the FMC remembers she is this awesome fae and has some self worth and she kicks ass. Unfortunately, she waits for the last two pages to do this.
This is the first book in the series so I can only hope it gets better, but it won't be a priority read - which sucks because I love all of Mercedes other work.
So I really have no words to describe this book. I will say that I did like this, the world building was interesting and the writing style was easy to read even if it felt like a scene went on longer than needed. The only part I would say I didn't like was how confusing this is, I still don't fully know what to believe or who Eve should trust because the guys only told her half-truths and even those weren't that informative. I do like Eve, she's a bit different but I just think that adds to her charm, I really can't wait to watch her grow throughout these books because she has such great strength hidden that will come out as the books go on. The guys, I really don't know what to say about them because they weren't too bad during this just a little creepy and very misleading in their actions. I did really like Eve's family, the twins were interesting characters and their relationship with Eve left many questions on how close they are and if that is going to have a bigger role in the future. Overall I did like this book, I just feel way more confused about what's going on at the end than I did when I started, hopefully we'll get more answers in the next book than questions.
What did I just read?!? It was amazing!! I wished it was longer and now I have to wait till 2019 for the second book!!!! That ending though!!!!??!!!!! I loved all of her men and know she's gonna kick some as s and get them in line. Jordan needs to be added to her harem of six!! Let there be seven.....or more!!!!!!!! Dain, Dain, Dain you knew your woman, yet you had to piss her off and get filled with iron arrows!! Y'all know the makeup is gonna be epic!! Loved this story!!!!
I love the characters in this book so much, they are so frustrating in that they reveal very little about themselves or their motivation (the guys that is), but they have me completely sucked in, I want to know more. I loved that I had to use my brain with this book, trying to work out what was going to happen in the story (and mostly being wrong!). It's an unexpected gem and I have so many questions at the end of the book. I want to know what happens next. I need my questions answered. I need the next book!
This was intense!!! I really enjoyed this book! I loved that Eve is a down-to-earth, normal girl, dealing with her own very real issues, when she suddenly has the rug pulled from under her by these wickedly attractive, larger than life Fae. Despite everything they throw at her (words, magic, a spanking, some killer smiles, etc), Eve is a fighter and a survivor. I really enjoyed the depth of her character and that she often put others first. Not going to lie, though, my favourite part of the dynamics of Eve's family!!
This was just confusing and I didn’t like it. The female main character was weak and the guys kept information from her which was frustrating. I think the thing that was so aggravating was that the female main character kept pushing back and was very skeptical and not very excepting of the fact that they are fairies. Also she knows that they cannot be in the car because I don’t hurts their skin and she forces him to be touching iron it just makes no sense. Are we supposed to do like the guys are we supposed to hate the guy? I was supposed to like the female main character or are we supposed to teach the female main character? Because honestly I didn’t like any of the characters. The ending was a shit show. Sorry not sorry not going to continue
Cliffhanger!!!! Ok ppl that's not why I gave 3 stars, but the fact I didn't really feel a connection between any of the guys and out heroine. They pretty much told her she was going to be theirs, and the way they treat her, its saddening. I really wanted our heroine to have some serious balls, but she just let them walk all over her, and none of them are redeeming in my eyes.
This story was unbelievably good and interesting. Very different. However, the writing could use some work. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it was very hard to follow. I had to constantly go back and reread parts. It didn’t flow very well, was a bit choppy. Things suddenly happened with no real explanation. That being said, it really is a very interesting story and I will read the next one.
This series as so much dark potential. O don't really know where it's going but I'm excited to go on that journey. It's a dark RH paranormal-romance. I like Evie's first wit and sarcasm. She doesn't like to take sh!t, but somehow finds herself talking it from these bossy Fae despite herself. Does this motley group of Fae have cruel intentions for Evie or the best of them? I guess we'll have to see in the next book.
The book itself is ok... Some of the dialog is drawn out and unnecessary, but I do like the characters... I'm not a fan of the actual author, I've had a few back and forth messages with her, and she's given really racist undertones when speaking about different ethnicities.... With that being said her books are ok... Not New York Times bestseller ok, but decent enough to read for someone who is passive aggressive prejudice....
I really like books where you're like "omg what's going on?" and "wait why is that happening" and "oh man I need to sleep but no, I need to think about, what that could be"....... If you like that, you must read this book!!! not everything makes sense at first...but the supense it creates - perfect!!!
And if that is not enough for you -> common there are very yummy faires and a strong female lead and family and crazy-faire-magic and crazy-faire-customs ;-)
This was good. The guys were total jerks most of the book and I didn't appreciate the way they talked to or treated her. but I think evie is going to start fighting back in the next book. She certainly did some fighting at the end. It's a cliffhanger which is kinda brutal. I enjoyed all the snark and sass she threw around.
I love this take on the fae and halflings. The day that this isn't easy for anybody and the fmc doesn't just roll over and say "okay" makes it even better. This matchup is going to take work. Ends in a cliffhanger, so if you are bothered by that, make sure they're all out. But really, this is awesome.
I loved this book! I can’t wait for more in the series, it ended on such a cliffhanger! Faerie is amazing and something I have not read a lot about. The characters are amazing & the main character is definitely my favourite with her sarcasm and humour! I have already started book 2.
Fantastic beginning to a promising tale. Eve is living her life closed off when the Fae come crashing into it and breaking down her walls. But things aren’t what they seem and knowing who to trust is going to be tricky, and crossing her won’t go unpunished. Excellent start with lots of heat promising to be even better going forward.
Wasnt expecting this. Expected sill y girl angst with typical smirking guys tricking her into everything or being too hot for her brain to work. This was interesting all the way. Though the ending was confusing. She has to know the Marks mean something she cant just turn her back on. Want the next in series asap.
This book is definitely one that captures your attention and makes you think. The rules of the game are not as simple as Eve (Evie) thinks, and it may cost her everything. I found this book to be very well-written and not soft and fluffy like some stories with Fae can be. Good job, Mercedes Jade.
If you like dark and deep, and no happy ending for now, this is the book. Twists and turns and double backs and you name it, so far it’s here. Seriously can’t wait to get my hands on book 2.
I really liked this and I really like Eve's smartass mouth. These Fae are sneaky as hell, though. That last bit of the book is full of twists and turns. What's the real truth? P.S. I adore Jackson and Matthew, too.
