I’ve been a writer for over 15 years now, but it wasn’t planned!

I had a variety of jobs, including secretary, trainee buyer at Harrods, dental nurse, production assistant in a reprographic and printing company and various others.

I began to write after joining a creative writing class. I had no success with article writing, or short stories, or fiction, but the first children’s story I wrote, for a magazine called Twinkle, was accepted for publication. Hooray!!!

Things snowballed and a lot (yes lots and lots) of hard work later I now write full time and have over 50 books published. I still go to the same writing class and we have become a big happy family of writers!

For me, writing is the best job ever. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love to create worlds for young children to enjoy and escape into – whether the stories are educational, bedtime, problem solving or just plain good fun. It’s also very exciting to see the first picture roughs, as my wonderful, talented illustrators bring the text to life.

I live on the Essex coast in a lovely two-bed-roomed flat, which I share with my husband, Michael. At long last I have an office to write in, with room for all my books and bits of scribbled on papers.

The seafront is (still) just around the corner, and I find a bracing walk (it gets freezing when the East wind blows from the North Sea!) or gentle stroll when the weather is warmer, is great for clearing my head and mulling over story ideas.

A lovely, gentle story of a kindly bear whose favorite book has come apart and he decides to write a new book. His own book. So he begins to meander through the beautiful forest in search of ideas for his story.

He encounters his forest friends, one by one. Each time there is some incident or action that takes place. Toward the end of the book, bear actually sits down to put together his ideas for his story.

The result is charming and is built around his own experiences and knowledge.

Beautifully soft illustrations that are just right for those youngsters to whom you would be reading it. And a grand encouragement for those budding authors who want to write their own story and publish their own book.

I recommend.

Bear's Book by Claire Freedman is a beautiful children's book that is abut friendship, creativity, imagination, and writing. Alison Friend's illustrations are cute, soft, and just make you want to be able to hug all the characters. The illustrations really bring this book to life.

This book is perfect for children about 4 and up as it is a bit too long for the preschool group. The story also is inspiring for children who want to be writers as it illustrates how you can draw on your life to create a story. Even for children not interesting in writing, it is still a wonderful story about friendship and helping your friends.

Thank you to LibraryThing Early Reviewers and the publisher for the review copy of this book.

Bear wants to write a book, but is having trouble finding inspiration. Will his friends be able to help?

Lovely, soft illustrations make the animals look oh-so-huggable and bring the characters to life. The story is sweet, and my only complaint is that the text is a little hard to read. But it's a great book for young, aspiring writers or those who want a cozy story.

Thank you to Candlewick Press and LibraryThing for the advanced copy of this book!*

Bear goes on an adventure in the forest to gain some inspiration. I wish these books for older kids were more challenging.

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Bear loves to read his favorite book of stories to such a degree that one day his book entirely falls apart. Bear decides to write his own story but struggles to come up with a good idea. While trying to battle his writer's block, Bear ends up helping out a good number of his friends from various challenges and therein lies the winning idea. The friends become the stars of his exciting tale--a tale the reader gets to enjoy along with the friends when they gather that night at Bear's home.

This was a great book with fantastic illustrations that I very much enjoyed. The idea of writer's block is very applicable to younger writers/readers, and I love how Bear realized his own life was fodder for a wonderful story.

First sentence: Once upon a time, there was a bear whose favorite thing to do was read. But Bear had a problem: he had read his book of stories so many times that it was falling to pieces...and one day a gust of wind blew all the pages away!

Premise/plot: After his favorite book is gone, Bear decides to write a new book. But writing does not come as naturally as reading!!! In fact, Bear finds himself stumped. But with more than a little help from his friends...he may just find inspiration and an opportunity to exercise his imagination.

My thoughts: At first I thought that Bear and I were peas in a pod. Then upon rereading I realized that Bear never broke down and cried over losing his favorite book. I would definitely have cried ugly tears. I would have found consolation somewhere—someway. But tears would have come first. Maybe Bear has been influenced by Pete the Cat. I love the character of Bear. I do. I think the book is super sweet. I love the themes of friendship and storytelling.

According to Claire Freedman, writing is something you do with friends. Where friends inspire you and give you ideas.

Before I get to my review, I must protest this idea. Among my interests as an author is teaching creativity skills, including through an online workshop called "Creativity Secrets with Soul." Here I'll just note that this notion, how supposedly writing is something you do with friends?

That's extremely unhelpful for those who are interested in creative writing, or excelling at other creative art forms. That said, and setting aside the implied model for creativity....

NOW I'LL REVIEW THIS BOOK SIMPLY AS A FICTION

It's a sweet fiction, begun with the evocative words "Once upon a time."

Pictures and text are friendly. By the end, Bear has succeeded in writing his story.

Everybody's happy.

FIVE STARS on behalf of this book's intended audience.

I've read this basic plot many times before. Haven't other people? I know that the average Good Reads picture book reviewer seems to have a knowledge of the genre about as deep as a mud puddle, but come on, folks!

You're not familiar with Rocket Writes a Story? You don't know the Steads' [book:Bear Has a Story to Tell|13170028}?

Sheesh!

This is pretty. It's sweet. But it's not original in the slightest.

One star removed for the flap near the end of the book. Yes, it's cute to set up Bear's "story" that way, but it's one more thing for the toddlers to tear.

Bear is struggling to find a story idea, and off he goes to see if a back-scratch or a swim will help. On his way, he meets some friends who need his help. It's a cumulative story that ends happily with a fold-out page showing Bear's New Story! Along the way, he does find and writes that story, with some help from Claire Freedman and sweet mixed-media illustrations by Alison Friend. For young readers and writers, a story to discuss in writing workshop! Thanks to Candlewick Press for the copy.

This is a beautifully illustrated children's book. It is about a bear who loves reading. One day he decides to write his own story, but he doesn't know how to begin. As he tries to come up with ideas, he meets his friends throughout the day who help give him ideas. It would be perfect for ages 4 and up. I would even find it a good book to read to children in first grade as it talks about the beginning, middle and ending when writing a story. I received a complimentary book as part of the Librarything Early Reviewers.

Experiencing a bit of writer’s block, Bear comes up with various ways to solve his problem. However, each time he tries to figure out what to write about, he’s interrupted by a friend who needs help. Will he ever find his story? Beautiful soft illustrations of mixed media bring much to this delightful story about friendship and how sometimes the best-laid plans can go awry and open up to even better solutions. I love the way a special foldout book is tucked inside the last pages!

Bear loves reading, until his favorite book falls apart. No problem - he'll make up his own story. But alas, writer's block stops Bear. A scritch, a swim and a climb don't offer him any story starters, but he does help his forest friends. A delightful gatefold surprise brings Bear's adventure to a swash-buckling conclusion.

Bear wants to write a book, but can't think of any ideas. He goes out to carry on with his day in the forest and ends up helping some of his forest friends. This gives him creative inspiration for his project. As a writer...ok, there is some truth in that? I always say if you're not out experiencing life then you won't have much to write about.

Very sweet tale. I particularly liked that the book Bear ends up writing is embedded inside the actual library book by way of a special folding. That was a fun way to do it, and I am sure children will enjoy flipping the page open, along with the full story. Illustrations are quite cute. Overall, a good way to encourage imagination.

Bear is an author with some serious writer's block! He decides to go outside and find a spot to think of ideas for his books. He tries several different places but always seems to run into a friend in need. Bear then realizes the PERFECT idea was starting him in the face all along.

We were tricked thinking this was another book in bear's tale. However, this is the same book as Bear's Story. Still a great story but I will say that the edition titled Bear's Story is more beautiful than this edition (yes, even though it's the exact same book).

Bear is an avid reader, whose favorite book pages blew away in the wind. Bear decides to write his own book, but has a problem of what to write about. It's not until Bear reflects back on his adventure filled day, that he writes the perfect story.
