Brian Azzarello (born in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American comic book writer. He came to prominence with 100 Bullets, published by DC Comics' mature-audience imprint Vertigo. He and Argentine artist Eduardo Risso, with whom Azzarello first worked on Jonny Double, won the 2001 Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story for 100 Bullets #15–18: "Hang Up on the Hang Low".
Azzarello has written for Batman ("Broken City", art by Risso; "Batman/Deathblow: After the Fire", art by Lee Bermejo, Tim Bradstreet, & Mick Gray) and Superman ("For Tomorrow", art by Jim Lee).
In 2005, Azzarello began a new creator-owned series, the western Loveless, with artist Marcelo Frusin.
As of 2007, Azzarello is married to fellow comic-book writer and illustrator Jill Thompson.
I thought this was slightly better than volume 1. The stories are still very hit and miss, but what do you expect from a book full of 8 pages stories by various creative teams. The one thing that was really noticeable is how bad the lettering is in a lot of these stories. Frequently, the artist did his own lettering and it shows, because a lot of it is atrocious.
Mostly White was a strong opener. I took this as a sign that this volume was gonna be far better than its predecessor. But I was wrong. From the second issue, it all slumped miserably apart from some gems. These really stood out. To name a few, I enjoyed Red Romance, Watching You and Wedding Breakfast. Too bad, they were lumped together with the other forgettable entries in this lousy compilation.
Meh. The first story, which is more of a ghost story than it is horror, was the best one. WAY too many weird orgies and bizarre sex scenes. If that's the best a writer can do to try and creep me out, I'm not interested. Give me weird, psychological horror or strange ghosts instead. I guess I'm just not afraid of perverts? Kinda regretted wasting one of my Hoopla checkouts on this.
This book has some truly disturbing stories. One thing I should mention is Joe R. Lansdale has a few stories in both volumes, so this could be some overlooked material for Lansdale fans.
Overall another good horror volume. Some of the stories were confusing and I think I missed the point, but overall there's more good than bad. I really wish this series had continued because I miss this type of horror anthology.
If you like truly dark horror (there's some humor thrown in to lighten things up too) then you should check out this series. Along with the recent Dark Horse CREEPY and EERIE titles, this is as close as modern comics get to the EC books of the 40s and 50s.
Meh. Most of the art is meh. Most of the stories are meh. Now, since I don't read tons of Western comics, I feel like some of these guys don't normally write horror. Some of these seemed unfinished, half-assed, uncertain. Some of the endings were disappointing after an otherwise decent story. Joe R. Lansdale and Mike Carey had some of the best offerings in this. Some of the art was cartoony, but fit. Some of the art was mediocre. And some of it was good. As usual with an anthology, the stories are all over the place in terms of quality and enjoyment. On the whole, though, I think I'll be donating this to the library.
While I’d call very few of the dozens of stories here downright bad, I can also remember less than five half an hour after finishing this collection and doubt very much that the number will hold steady throughout the next few days, a rather sobering quota considering the theoretical talent and pedigree involved in every aspect of the series and probably symptomatic for the state of horror comics back then (as if the fact that Steve Niles had a prospering career there for a while wasn’t enough). There’s also a certain perversity to the writer/artist combinations in that some of the best art goes to the most non-descript stories and Vice versa.
I guess in addition to saying that it reminds me of EC Comics, maybe it is more that it feels like pre Code comics. I didn't realize it through the first volume but there is a lot of sex in these. I wonder if it is just because the writers think that adult comics should have more sex or maybe that sex and death are inextricably linked? Some of these folks probably don't have a chance to stretch these particular muscles maybe?
Anyway. I am not sure about the flinching and the horror part but there are some good stories that fold into themselves with the odd one being a surprise.
I thought this was a little better than the first volume, but there were plenty of duds. Some were really fun though! I would have to look back to which ones I liked specifically, so I apologize for this unhelpful review!
