"He was a slave, yes. We both were slaves, but where I saw only darkness ahead, Mackenzie found hope for the world. I wish he were correct. He always found hope for the world." - James Anderson -

Many books have been written about the decline and fall of the United States and the turmoil thereafter, whether these are biographies on Robert Dalimore, case studies of the Executive Ten, books on the mysterious lives of those in Society, or the thousands of journal pieces that have been brought together to create a picture of what it was like to live in the post-United States world. Despite the extensive library that could be created from the literature of that time, one story, perhaps the most important story, still remains untold. This book begins that story.

"The Ninth Hour" takes place in an alternate timeline of 1976 right before the US collapses, after having lost WWII and becoming a class-based society. It's really a snapshot into the lives of three teenage boys during this time; they are just going about their day-to-day lives, and we see how they handle and react to the imminent collapse of the world as they know it. There's also a few vignettes of other characters, which I really enjoyed. I was drawn into the world and became invested in the characters. While the book can get graphic with the darkness of what's happening in the world, it ended with a feeling of hope for the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this debut! It's a story that makes you think and stays on your mind once you finish. The author is clearly laying the groundwork for the rest of the series, and I can't wait for more!

World building that draws you in, deep characters that you can’t help but become attached to. It’s an excellently written book, a heavy book, that only pulled me in deeper and deeper as the story and characters progressed.

I can’t wait to read more by this author, and look forward to seeing his next installments in this series.
