This book is set in Spain and takes you on a journey through the country in pictures/illustrations alone. It walks you through a beautiful wordless story of how the people in Spain live and work and play.

The pictures reflect the culture of a working community: fishermen, farmers, guards, a farmer's market, etc...It also reflects a community that knows how to play, from kids playing soccer, running through the streets, dancing in the streets, bullfighting, and so forth. Another wonderful characteristic of this country you catch a glimpse of is the nature and sense of community the people have.

It is a beautiful depiction of another culture and can give readers a culturally stimulating insight to Spain. I can't wait to read Mitsumasa's other books.

Beautiful pictures with lots of detail, I just wish there was more of an explanation at the end - maybe the location of each place or a few words about the main events depicted, there is a page of description but, having been twice to Spain, I would have liked to know more. Still, I love looking at this with my children and always finding new little details together.

The illustrations are lovely and very intricate, but readers (especially kids) who know little about Spain will be kinda lost. A little more structured background information will make this more enjoyable, in my opinion.

1. This is a wordless book, showing Anno’s journey through Spain. On each page there is a picture of a different area in Spain, from the houses, fields, town center, and bull fights. This book allows for the reader's imagination to flow and look deeply at what the people are doing on each page.

2. I thought this book was interesting, it is one that I have not heard of before. The illustrations are very interesting, and even though there are no words there is a clear line to follow. It is a very vivid journey through Spain that I think many students would enjoy.

3. This book can be connected with other books written by Mitusmasa Anno such as, Anno’s Journey, Anno’s U.S.A, and Anno’s Mysterious Multiplying Jar.

4. There are no words in this book, so I cannot pick a juicy quote. Although, I think this would be a good book to show students how things may be different or the same in other parts of the world.

The pictures were lovely and intricate, with lots to look at. Unfortunately, I know very little about Spain, so it was impossible to get much from the book. I recognized Picasso and Dali references and the running of the bulls in Pamplona, and maybe the Alhambra?, and that was about it. The kids and I would have enjoyed it much more if there had been a key at the back that explained or at least named the things in the book so that we could learn about them.

It's clearly more of a book for Spain insiders than for neophytes. So perhaps for others, more familiar with Spain, it would rank higher.

Beautiful illustrations of cities, villages, churches, the people and the pastimes of Spain. There are religious feast days and festivals like the running of the bulls in Pamplona, pastoral scenes with field workers harvesting olives, then pressing them to make olive oil, a fishing village with the fishermen's nets hung out to dry in the sun. I particularly liked the drawing of an outdoor wedding that takes place in the plaza in front of the town church. Round to one side servants are setting the table for an open-air wedding feast.

After exploring, seeing and searching through Anno's USA I was curious to see how Anno represents other countries in his wordless books, in the case Spain. Like Anno's USA, Anno's Spain shows images of Spain from the past. In every page, it is exciting to find pieces of art or monuments that I can recognize. He also depicts images of the culture, architecture and events representative of Spain. This type of books could invite interesting conversations but also it could be helpful if students are studying foreign countries and cultures.

This wordless book takes you through cities and countryside, exploring Spain, it's landmarks and culture.

Ages: 4 - 8

Cleanliness: there are two portraits of naked women that people are looking at - they are somewhat vague outlines.

I wasn't expecting a book with no words at all, but it was just the thing to keep the older of my charges interested. He loves art, and was fascinated by all the tiny details Anno put into his illustrations. It's opened up a whole new world of topics for him to explore!

This book has different scenes from Spain. It is wordless. It could be fun for kids to get an idea of what a different country would look like.

Anno’s Spain (also known as Anno’s Journey V), Mitsumasa Anno, 2003 in Japanese; 2004 in English, ISBN 0399242384, 10” × 9.2” × .4”

Wordless (except “Bar” and “Restaurant” on buildings). Anno rows ashore, buys a horse, and rides through many scenes. At the end he leaves the horse and rows back to the ship. Two pages of text at the end, saying it’s a true story: Mitsumasa Anno travels the world, renting cars and making paintings of significant sites. So all the sites in the book are real sites in Spain—but there’s no caption to say where the picture is. You would have to know the architecture of particular places. The running of the bulls is there. There are visual jokes. For example the first picture shows a large melted watch draped on a building. This is Cadaques, near Salvador Dalí’s birthplace, according to the text in the back. There are a lion and a hippopotamus in the stands watching a bullfight. Almost everything is pre-industrial: big sailing ship, everything animal or human power—except: a motorcycle at a bicycle race; television camera and sound recording of a queen.

Enchanting picture book.

This delightful book has a section detailing Santiago de Compostela, the destination of pilgrims walking the journey on the Camino. Anno's books present detailed images and no words. And yet they draw the "reader " in. The details and the back stories add to the art and make these children's books into favorites for adults. As a pilgrim, I love this book, but as a human, I adore all Anno's beautiful images and the stories they tell. - Ginn

I found this book interesting because it is a wordless picture book that is full of illustrations of Spain. This journey through Spain is based on the author's own journey through Spain. Throughout the book, you can see the author portrayed as a figure in blue, usually riding on his horse.

This story is of drawn pictures of the author's view of Spain. Anno takes the reader through different enchanting cities and historical times of this beautiful country. The reader uses their imagination to tell the story of what they see through Anno's eyes and his Spain.

Beautiful illustrations, a look through cultural and historical, and architecture of Spain. Should read explanation at the end of the book before perusing the illustrations. I agree that a tiny bit of text would have been nice. Or an index relating towns/concepts with page numbers at the end.

A book with almost no text. Beautiful images. It took me several runs before I realized the author included himself in each image. Fun.

A historical journey though Spain in pictures. Interesting detail. Don’t forget to read the explanation at the end of the book to fill in the places and events you may have missed.

Mitsumasa Anno is one of my favorite illustrators/authors now. The first book we borrowed from the library was Anno's Counting Book which was wonderful. This one explores Spain and is fascinating to look through. There are so many details to follow and it's fun to point to the different scenes and interactions on each page. I am looking forward to borrowing more of the author's books.

I love this book. Though there are no words, I believe this book would be great to snuggle up with a child and observe each page and inquire as to what the people are doing, what the buildings are, etc. Truly allowing the child to guide their discovery of Spain through the eyes of Mitsumasa Anno, children can go from the book to the internet to learn more about "corrida de toros" and the "Fiesta de la Merce" (see video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toNJg...). Students can compare and contrast daily life in Spain with daily life in their own town. Since there are no words, there is no age limit to the discovery for children.
