Arjuna’s got a problem; she’s too good at her job working as an underground, unlicensed boxing bookie for the city’s most blood thirsty crime boss, Montu. And now, because of her efficiency, he thinks she’s coming for the throne. Enter: Pretty Boy, bare knuckles boxing debutant and ruthless queen of the ring. As Montu’s attempts on Arjuna’s life get harder to dodge, she hires Pretty Boy to help her climb to the top. Stoke explores the honeyed synonymy of revenge, love, and obsession set against the backdrop of a surreal city underbelly where it’s all about going to the mattresses.
So assassins? Boxing? Torturing a dude? OK. Sure. I felt uncomfortable during the scene that the hung the dude between meats and started beating him up to have him talk... nope. Not my kind of thing. Pretty Boy is a disturbed human being who doesn't mind hurting people around them which was just very WHAT THE HELL? Which also kind had me wondering why I was reading this one. And the ending? So there is supposed to be more? This is not all? And given the blurb I had expected something more elegant and less let's just hit everyone and everything on the way to the top. The art was so-so. *sighs* Oh well, glad I at least had the chance to read and try this one out.
I wasn't sure what to expect from something so petite but this book was good! A bookie hires a boxer to help her with a little problem she has. I don't want to give too much a way because its so short but I really liked it and wouldn't mind reading something longer or of the same world. I really liked the art and how they used some of the phrases in the panels. No complaints but I was slightly confused by the end. Only because it feels like there maybe more to come...
Stoke was a wonderful read - short and sweet, the characters burst from the pages in a way that makes you sure they existed before you opened the book and still go on after you've closed it.
The artwork is a dream and I look forward to more stories by Sam Wade!
