When Carmen Mitchell left her hometown of Brunswick Georgia, the last thing she wanted was a reunion. Then, her only mission was to attend college, pursue her modeling career, and leave her past hurts behind. But when Carmen receives some startling news, she decides the time to make her final appearance has arrived; however, reemerging could open old wounds and the obstacle of facing the man she left behind presents the biggest challenge of them all.
Dominic Johnson has long since put thoughts of Carmen Mitchell out of sight and out of mind. Circumstances would bring her back to Brunswick, but there was no repartee to be spoken to the woman who’d left him years ago without so much as a goodbye. It isn’t until Dominic gains a first-hand glimpse of Carmen that old memories spark and a detonation of what was, and what could be, set off a myriad of images in his mind. Now Dominic is faced with a battle that’s waging internally, to stay out of her way or to succumb to Carmen Mitchell, again.

Was I the only one who noticed that at first it was written that Carmen was raised by her father Donovan (who was never mentioned after the funeral) who together they were raised like sister and brother, only later to be revealed that Benjamin and Ada were her mother's parents? Wayment?!
Then the less than climactic reason she left town, and Dominic, without looking back? Then later thought to herself something about him admitting the part that he played in their breakup? Where ?! That's that new math....
*Then* you bust back into town with plans to stay at the budget hotel. Okay, Ms. America's Next Top editorial model who walked the catwalk with Ms. Naomi, and lives in a 2br in Manhattan. 👀 Brunswick has an airport, but only one other hotel. Oh. 😳🙄
*Then* in betwixt grieving the grandmother you couldn't return to visit in ten years, you throwing folks out of her "graveside" service, only to storm off before it was over with no explanation and no questions from anybody? 😶 And what was not-really-a-friend Jeremy's reason for being other than a ride to the cemetery? And again something about daddy-brother-uncle Donavan who hugged her back at the house, noticing the tension between her and Ben, supposedly with a plan to pull her to the side to ask about it that never happened, said "oh welp" when she caused a scene at his... mother's(?) final resting place, only to be never heard from again.
*Then* after a weak apology, she had the nerve to have all of these emotional demands of "friendship" from Dominic, demand tha D, played crazy when she mentioned her "friend who has a key to her spot" Devon(donovan, dominic).
Poor Dominic, his mom should have bashed Carmen's head in and prayed for Mister later for hurting her boy.
But alas... an airplane snatching and epilogue later, there was nothing but questions as to where these 5-star ratings came from.
This was sooo cute….I really love second chance romance stories….Dominic and Carmen got an opportunity to hash out the issues of her abruptly leaving their small town and relationship 8 years ago….Dominic also repaired the broken relationship Carmen had with her mean grandfather Ben…I was surprised that I didn’t see or hear more from her father.
Carmen and Dominic were young sweethearts that lost toich with each other. A death brings them back together. The truth opens the door for them. Complete honesty allowed for more.
This started off strong, but unfortunately began to fizzle. I think it is mainly due to the fact that I found some continuity issues in the story, the most glaring of which was in relation to Carmen's family. Initially, we are led to believe that her grandparents, who gained custody after her mother's death at childbirth, were her paternal grandparents. There's a part where Carmen explains that she and her father were essentially raised side by side as siblings, since dad was only 15 when she was born.
But halfway through, Carmen explains to Dominic (her childhood sweetheart whom she left unceremoniously nearly a decade ago and is reuniting with after encountering him at her grandmother's funeral) that she ghosted him and left town after deciding she could no longer live with her grandfather. She cites that when she was 12, she overheard her grandfather telling her grandmother that he blamed Carmen for their daughter's (her mother's) death. In effect, her grandparents are now her maternal relatives.
Also, I did not like how Dominic was accepting so much blame for Carmen's decisions. Her inability to communicate her feelings and pain during their teenage romance was what led to their dissolution. He was so confused and distraught by her actions, he showed chronic signs of depression.
Yes, this is a short/novella, but it did not make sense to me why they rushed into marriage 3 months into getting back together (after an 8 year hiatus). Given the progression of the story up until that point, it would have made more sense to me for their HFN to be rooted in the fact that they found they way back together and are willing to make things work.
More like a 2.5 star rating

I love the second chance theme of If I Could Stay but, the actual story line was ridiculous. When Carmen finally told Dominic why she left, I was like huh?!!! Her reason for leaving was just weird and didn't make a whole lot of sense. I feel like the author could've come up with a better story line that was way more believable. But, the book was well written and it was enjoyable.

"If I Could Stay" by Stephanie Nicole Norris
My Thoughts....
"If I Could Stay" was a beautiful touching novella that this author gives the reader of Carmen and Dominic. With Carmen holding it all in and telling no one was truly a story that will only touch ones heart. If only Carmen had felt that there was someone she could have spoken with about this situation. When Carmen has her eighteenth birthday she leaves for New York. For eight years Carmen had been gone only returning now due to the death of her grandmother. And as life would have it she sees Dominic and he recused her from a horrible situation that had occurred at the funeral. This will only lead them to being together and being able to talk that will lead to so much more. Will these two finally be able to talk and will Dominic fully understand just why Carmen had left in the first place? After all is said and done will Carmen leave Dominic again and return to her home in New York? To find how this story will continue you will just have to pick up "If I Could Stay" to see if this beautiful emotional story will all come together for Carmen and Dominic. Will they finally get their HEA?
This short novella/novelette packs an emotional punch with Carmen returning to her small town hometown for her grandmother’s funeral and meeting the high school sweetheart, Dominic, who she walked out on eight years previously without any explanation or warning. This is a story of forgiveness and reconnection and of love being willing to bridge old hurts and resentments.
I quite enjoyed this even though I don’t think personally I would have been quite as forgiving and understanding and for the length of fiction that it was, I thought the author did a fabulous job. I can imagine if this was longer, we could have gotten more exploration of Carmen’s relationship with her father and grandfather, the deal with her grandfather’s side chick and a greater understanding of the healing of Carmen and Dominic’s relationship but for a quick romantic short perfect for lunchtime, this was good.
Great and sweet. Stephanie Nicole Norris is easily becoming one of my fav authors.
Heartbreak, Frustration, Yearning, Craving, Passion, Forever and more, all sealed with Love in this short read. Carmen and Dominic reconnecting and starting anew the way they did was so sweet. I loved it. Really liking this series already. Book 2, let's go.
I always cringe when they have to go back home for a funeral because you know all the family secrets are gonna come out. Yes that happened but this time around I didn't mind. There was just enough conflict to move the story but didn't take away from it. I enjoyed the story very much and can't wait to read the whole Lunch Break series.
I loved this short story! Carmen and Dominic were meant for each. Just so happy they realized it before it was too late. I wanted more but it was a great quick read. Waiting patiently on the next one! Great job Stephanie!
Loved every single moment of Dominic and Carmen's reunion. This novella was soooo good. Can't wait to read more of the lunch break series by Mrs. norris!
These lunch break stories are so short, but so good. I read them out of order, but that didn't make a difference since they are clearly standalones...each one hot and sexy. Carmen was a little high strung in the way she treated Dominic. She really expected him to cave so easily after the way things were left between them.
That funeral scene--geez! Instead of a physical altercation with that jack@$$, she should have just blown his mind with what she knew about his wife. That would have shut his @$$ up.
I hated that Carmen left town after graduation with no explanation and stayed away for eight years. But after what she went through with her grandfather, I had to cut her a little slack. That man was impossible. However, the chemistry between Dominic and Carmen was just as explosive as ever--like the years apart were non-existent. I commend Dominic for trying to have some willpower where Carmen was concerned, but his heart didn't get that message.👀 I love and adore second chance romances!🧡🧡
I did not finish this book. This was probably my least favorite book of the year. The plot holes and the anticlimactic reason she left coupled with the way the sex scene was written 😩. I just can't make myself finish I'm 50% done and I'm just annoyed. Carmen truly seems like a awful person.
Carmen returns home after 8 years to attend her grandmother's funeral. Her intentions are to get in and out in under 24 hours avoiding the man whose heart she broke when she disappeared into the dead of night on her 18th birthday to pursue a modeling career.
Or at least that's what he and the rest of the community believe since she is now in fact a famous face, traveling the world, and living in New York City.
Dominic suffered heartbreak and abandonment for 8 years. Not knowing what he did or could have done to prevent the woman he loved from running away without a goodbye or explanation.
Their reunion is incredibly raw, emotional, relatable, and beautiful. I was not prepared for how heavy this one hit. I empathized with both of them so much.
This was my first read by Stephanie Nicole Norris and I am hooked. This book is part of her Lunch Break Series which is a collection of 8 novellas.
If she can fit this much feeling into a short story I can NOT wait to read her full length novels.
Spice level was a 2. This was more of an emotional journey but there are multiple physical interactions that were hot and exciting.
Definatley recommend, can't wait to finish this series then move on to the rest of her backlist.
This is a free ebook from Amazon Prime advertised as a lunch break read and it is exactly that. It's quick, smutty, and unfortunately (as another reviewer stated) simply unrealistic.
Which is what contemporary romance *should* be. Right?
Straight up, did not care for Carmen. This woman shows up after some eight years in her hometown for her grandmother's funeral looking to avoid her ex-boyfriend, Dominic, because she pretty much abandoned him back when she was eighteen. So of course, they cross paths and she immediately goes into apologetic mode. Forgive me. Don't hate me. Blah blah blah.
So what follows? Immediately after this earnest plea for forgiveness, she throws herself at him. Completely objectifies the guy. Box checked on relinquishing the pent up guilt she brought upon herself, Carmen then proceeds to use him to satisfy her own lust.
Okay, okay. It's an erotic novella. It's granted that it revolves around lust. But, c'mon.
This boy loved you. Have a heart. Have some sense. Make some sense.
What a beautiful story of love, loss and found love!
Carmen suffered in silence as a child in her grandparents home adored by her Nana and hated by her grandfather because she lived and her mother didn't. Her mother died at a young age giving birth to Carmen. She was in love with Dominic and he with her yet as soon as she was legal she escaped the harshness of her grandfather's words and treatment and the knowledge that he was cheating on her grandmother with one of the young girls she was growing up with. She clashes with that young girl now a grown married woman when she returns for her Nana's funeral and is carried off by Dominic who she has not seen since she left the night of her birthday. After talking, confessing their love for each other and sharing sheet scorching lovemaking they decided they wanted to be together but neither was brave enough to voice it until Carmen was seated on a plane wanting to stay but paralyzed to make a move to stay. Thankfully Dominic took the choice out of her hands by coming on the plane to get her where they began to live their happily ever after. This was a really good book that I truly enjoyed.
Carmen and Dominic novella was short and sweet. I particularly love Dominic ability to forgive the pain he endured by Carmen leaving to pursue a better life. Carmen had a whole lot of issues to work passed in order to let love in . I first I taught she took a damm long time to see what right in front of her , but then it's so true to real life that if a person had received that much hate and rejection that Carmen had he / she would in fact find it impossible to let love in . Then there is what I must label reunion sex! Wow !!! It was steamy and intense . So steamy I looked around in work to see who's watching. The ending brought me such joy . I am so pleased to read Carmen has finally found her happy end . I wish is for Miss Norris to provide an update for Carmen to let us know how she's doing after a couple years of marriage. Thank you Author Stephanie Nicole Norris.
I'm so glad that Dominic and Carmen rekindled their love and relationship. I understand her leaving due to her grandfather, Benjamin, blaming her for her mother passing away during childbirth and treating her so harshly. I think that Carmen knew that Dominic would get into trouble if she had told him how her grandfather was treating her but it still seems as though her dad, Donovan, should've done something to help her because he was old enough to raise her when she got in her teens. At least Grandma Ada stood up for her somewhat. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I liked this short read. It was amazing how the author told this huge story in such a short amount of time. I loved that the drama wasn't prolonged for a long time. I was convinced of Dominic and Carmen's love for one another. Dominic is a stand up guy. He was a good man, who loved his woman. He was also smart. Carmen had her issues, but I found her to be strong and independent. Which made them perfect for one another.
I read an earlier review and almost did not read this story because of the review. I am so glad that I read this. It was Good, Short, and Sweet.
If I Could Stay. This was a short and sweet lunch break read. I enjoyed this book. Carmen goes back home to her grandmother's funeral. She loved her grandmother but her grandfather hated her because she lived and his daughter died at childbirth which made for a really hard time living in the home with them. While at the funeral she comes in contact with her old boyfriend Dominic. She left town without telling him she left so there was bad blood between them. They talk and rekindle a love that should never split. This is really a good short lunch break book!
O. M. G! Started reading this book while at work, on my lunch break. Unfortunately, interruptions prevented my reading excursion. Excursion! Yes, this author takes you on a romantic ride with the most intricate details, you can picture, in your minds eye, every scene so vividly painted. You won't be disappointed with this read, but as a lunch series.....I suggest you, bring a bib or large napkin along. The romance will make you drool.
Carmen returns to her hometown on a sad occasion, but she ends finding more than she ever wanted. Dominic is still hurt by Carmen abandoning their relationship years prior, but his love for her didn't diminish. After reconnecting and getting to the truth of the matter, they realize that they can't let go of each other again. Fate steps in and helps them get a second chance to love.
It's great when two souls rekindle a flame that still has that tingling burn and yearn for one another. This was an exciting and informative journey. I'm learning that in relationships communication is key, because when you see things one way does not and I REPEAT DOES NOT mean the other person see it the same way. That's why talking it out is a good way for the two to be on the same level or somewhere near or around the vicinity of the situation. This was an awesome read for my lunch break. ReneeG 👍
Great read loved the story...I thought her grandfather had done the unthinkable I'm sure as others...but of course you wowed me with him blaming her for the death of his daughter. Now that heifer that came to the funeral knowing she screwed that woman husband was mad disrespectful she didn't want Carmen to put her on blast lol...love your stories but of course always want more.
Carmen and Dominic had not seem each other in almost a decade and the tension was thick. Carmen unexpectedly leaving without explanation left Dominic in a rut...heart broken and truly left out of her life plans. Carmen was dealing with childhood issues and thought that her only option was to run. Returning home forced her to not only face Dominic but her past demons. Although their reunion felt quick it was after all a lunch series.
