Book Every Writer Getting Ready to Publish Should Read

Greta Boris and Megan Haskell clearly delineate what it takes to publish your work in both the traditional publishing world and the independent publishing world. I greatly appreciated their breakdown of what’s involved, especially the costs to independently publish.

I made the mistake of rushing to self-publish a book that was not properly edited for content (repetitions and organization). I feel better now about my decision to take it off the market to rewrite it.

Thank you, Greta & Megan

As writers, we are often isolated in our workspace and kept company only by our imaginations, muses, and feverish minds. We write in our comfy chairs and coffee shops with our headphones on, tuning out the world. Once that elusive first draft is finished, we celebrate, but most of the time, this is brief. We are then left pondering, “Now what?”

Publish takes you step-by-step through the process of what you need to do once you finish your manuscript. As the title clearly indicates, best-selling authors, Boris and Haskell, offer a variety of practical information to help you transform from an aspiring author to a published author. Whether you are looking for traditional publishing, boutique publishing, or independent, this book has all three tracks covered.

Packed with useful tools and resources, this book acts as a companion and reference guide. For example, Boris and Haskell offer a Publishing Personality Test to help you identify which publishing path is best for you. They discuss the need for tenacity, professionalism, and networking with other writers; understanding your specific audience, knowing your genre, what an author platform is, why branding is important, and how to use social media. Most of all, Boris and Haskell urge aspiring authors to identify early on what their strengths and limits are, for this will help them produce a better quality book. My favorite advice offered is that above all, write. Don’t let the publishing process stop you from writing. Even while one book is being published, authors who are in this for life are already working on their next book.

Whether you are an aspiring author or published author, this book is an excellent resource to the complex but rewarding journey of publication. Thanks to Boris and Haskell for their dedication to helping authors excel. It’s a guide I am sure to reference and recommend time and again.
