Lacking a pocket dimension, lacking a power, lacking a thigh to hug onto and the three life advantages (money, power, and looks), he had been cautiously living in the apocalypse for ten full years, getting closer to falling into the zombies’ mouths, but unexpectedly he had the bad luck to be caught in a fight between two gangs and die, it really left people feeling disappointed.
But when he opened his eyes, he had returned to a decade ago, three months before the apocalypse!
Like before he still lacked an ability, an ordinary person without a pocket dimension, but he did have ten full years of experience in living in the apocalypse! Even if he didn’t fight zombies, didn’t hunt monsters, he could still live a careful farming life in the safe zone.
Find a safe house, utilise all kinds of skills from his previous life to farm in exchange for meat, and if possible, find a person to peacefully spend the rest of his life with; ordinary people had their own ordinary little pieces of happiness.
Originally believing he had picked up a beauty he returned home to prepare a golden house, but on the contrary he was the one being pushed down……someone once said, whether it is people or matters, by no means can you only look at the surface!
Very tropey, but it's interesting as a post-apocalypse survival tale. It's got background M/M but is mostly gen and isn't graphic. The biggest flaw to me is that the relationship dynamic is the usual uke/seme (rigid top/bottom roles, but not necessarily dom/sub in the BDSM sense) rather than seke (reversible, AKA versatile, flexible). It's unfortunately part of the Asian BL (yaoi) tradition that there are few "reversible couples" due to the tastes of the writers and mostly straight female yaoi readers. And Chinese light novels in general have problematic depictions of gender roles and often underlying chauvinism if not outright misogynistic attitudes toward women or the "weaker" one in a relationship. Japanese and Koren light novels can be similarly flawed, but in my reading experience it's lass overt.
This light novel isn't worse than the usual one regarding chauvinism, and in fact because the narrative is more focused on survival strategy and action rather than "love" and coupledom, it is more successful n garnering my attention. The animals that became pets were cute, there is a baby adoption in the latter part of the novel along with base building, so it could be considered post-apoc curtain fic. .
As the title of 'The Reborn Otaku's Code of Practice for the Apocalypse' explains, the book is about an otaku who died and time travelled 58 days before the zombie apocalypse. With his rebirth, he had no delusions about heroism; All he wanted was to live comfortably so he uses his knowledge to essentially build out a shelter and focused on the more logistical aspects on how to survive e.g. food, water distillation systems, solar panels.
It's hard to make something like zombies and mutant superpowers boring but this book somehow managed it.
It's about a zombie apoocalypse, arguably the most marketable horror because zombies, right?
Like, how? Truthfully, this novel disappointed in its execution of the farming/apocalyptic horror/slice of life concept.
Additionally, the main couple seem to have a lot of internalised issues regarding sexuality and women in general especially during the first half of the novel but not so much in the latter half.
Aside from all that, they were very wholesome and besides, everyone comes with their own emotional baggage so that makes them realistic in this aspect, who knows.
If I had a singular complaint about the romance, it would be that it felt too stiff and rigid.
The romance wasn't romantic.
All of these factors contribute to why I think this book could have been shortened significantly. There were parts that dragged on for too long and there were parts that should have been cut out because of how meaningless it was to the rest of the story.
My final thoughts: ROCPA is like a long train ride where there is no scenery, no means of entertainment and the destination is just another run-down train station.
Slice of Life in the apocalypse. I was really attracted to this setting since sounds very lighthearted... and it is! VERY lighthearted. The author tries to remind you of human darkness and how people would devolve at the first sight of peril with very bloody depictions that get glossed over in the next paragraph. This was extremely silly and the author telling us that everyone is really loose in the apocalypse but at the same time getting into a relationship after a one night stand or because the shou can cook nice meals and is homey??? Everybody betrays everybody! Excepto the Main Couple and Co. Also... some things don't add up. Like the author felt that since this was a low stakes SoL there was no need to look at a calendar or keep continuity. Add all of this to the atrocious MTL translation and the fact that this shit is long and I'm done.
I might slowly finish this over time idk. Won't put any stars because technically I dnf this. (For now)
I think this is the first zombie apocalypse slice of life novel I've ever read. I really liked it!
The translator MTL the novel, so some parts were a little confusing, but overall, it was pretty entertaining reading about how Luo Xun and his team slowly but surely created a peaceful home environment during an apocalypse.
Because I'm used to reading zombie apocalyptic novels that's more focused on leveling up and constant action, this novel was a nice change of pace. Zombie evolution and politics on base affects them but only on the fringes instead of being the main focus like most books in this genre. This book focused more on farming and getting materials to support their base.
The ending was a little rushed and abrupt. I would have liked a few extras that talked more about the future.
Finally after 6 days of reading, reading & reading again FINALLY DONE WITH THIS 😭❤️
'I have a farm in this post-apocalyptic world' kind of story. An ordinary-otaku man reborn in zombie apocalypse world, changed his little world for better. I really like how it evolves among him & his Otaku team only. Not saving the base kind of thing but just farming, building his own little farm. Their Otaku team also very much lovable to read. And their little bun towards the end! 🥰 (not mpreg okies).
All in all, totally worth the read even tho the story kind of have abrupt ending. Still acceptable kinda.
I liked it but I wish there was more. I also wish that the ending didn’t feel so rushed. But I still liked that Luo Xun becoming the leader of the group even if he was an “ordinary” human with no powers. He was still the brains of the operation. But I do think a great leaders let’s his team have an input and cares about what they think. It was good.
Al principio pintaba muy bien. Pero conforme seguía leyendo me pareció muy aburrida la historia. Apenas si pasan cosas interesantes. La dejé a medias. No pude enamorarme ni de la química de los personajes
Sometimes I think I need a copy of this, just to store it for emergency. Like realllly, it's so detailed that I could use it for survivance guid in apocalyp!! Pretty real, pretty honest. 🦦
Cheat code to surviving an apocalypse, hug the thickest, sturdiest thigh you can find, much better if it's the villian~ It was fun! I really enjoyed it 💜
Such a feel-good slice of life story. No big drama, no big climax, just an account of the day to day life of a group of people during the apocalypse, and it just works! It is wonderful to read and you just want to know more. There is a happy ending for everyone.
The relationship between the two leads develops relatively fast, but it does not feel rushed at all.
There is enough world development, intrigue, and danger to keep things exciting and realistic. The base politics are interesting to see and how things evolve as time passes makes sense and keeps the story moving forward.
The side characters are developed and interesting. Plus all the food!!!! There is so much of it! I felt inspired to try cooking some authentic Chinese food after reading this. I loved this one so much, and have already reread it twice.
Really liked this novel. The ending was rushed and definitely could have been extended.
Would have been interesting if the kept digging found a cave and created a underground city. Created riders for the wolves and eagles and brought in people and other animals slowly.
