An Edu-taining Cross-Border Romp

What happens when a Canadian couple decides to spend their winters in the American Southwest? A lot more than you might imagine!

When Layla Ford and her husband Butch are thrust headlong into American culture, some all-too-obvious differences between Canada and the U.S. rise to the surface, and the ever-curious author – who never does anything halfway – is prompted to search for explanations. Missing U, Neighbor! is her first-person account of getting to the bottom of the American and Canadian national characters – a one-of-a-kind combination of comical stories, pungent commentary, and enlightening dissertations on history, sociology, justice, and politics.

Not much escapes Layla’s wry attention. She fearlessly tackles a multitude of cross-border subjects ranging from fast food to free trade, homeland security to health care, and grammar to guns. Utah, with its innate oddities, receives special attention as Layla and Butch struggle to understand the intricacies of the Mormon church and, even more perplexing, Utah liquor laws.

Readers of every nationality will laugh and learn as they navigate the twists and turns of the most unusual international relationship on the planet. And everyone will be agog at the ultimate conclusion: Americans and Canadians are different.

• Why do Canadians and Americans spell certain words differently?
• How did the beaver become Canada’s national symbol? Did any other animals apply?
• What quirk of the American character makes U.S. citizens reject the notion of universal health care?
• How many times has the U.S. invaded Canada, and vice versa?
• Why is service so good in the U.S. and so pathetic in Canada?
• Where in the U.S. is it illegal not to own a gun?
• Why is the U.S. the only G7 country that still has the death penalty – along with the world’s highest incarceration rate?

The answers to these questions, and so many more, await within the pages of Missing U, Neighbor!
