A battle looms, and she could lose everything...Again and again, the same dreadful prediction...a remote prison fortress, a fierce battle, an unthinkable outcome.
For Jess Ballard, the signs could not be clearer; if the Durupinen want to maintain their control over the Gateways to the spirit world, they will have to battle for them at the ancient Skye Príosún, where even now a rebellion is brewing, ready to burst the barriers of the ancient stronghold. It is a near-impossible proposition. The very ranks of their protectors have been breached, and it is only a matter of time before the trust between Caomhnóir and Durupinen has all but disintegrated. The only chance the Durupinen have is to infiltrate the príosún from within—with nothing left to lose, Jess volunteers herself for the job.
But the dangers are very real. The Caomhnóir of the príosún have been compromised. Jess does not know who she can trust inside—even her once unshakable bond with Finn Carey is being tested. If she chooses wrongly—forms the wrong alliance or makes the wrong gamble—the fate of the spirit world could hang in the balance. The challenges are formidable... but so is the young woman facing them.
Heart of the Rebellion is the much-anticipated fifth installment in E.E. Holmes' spine-tingling paranormal series The Gateway Trackers.
E.E. Holmes grew up near Boston, Massachusetts, where she spent the majority of her childhood reading books. She read them almost constantly, and as a result, perfected the art of walking and reading at the same time, a skill she can still perform to this day with remarkably few instances of falling on her face. She also wrote many books and poems in blank books and on the backs of legal pads her father brought home from the office. They remain some of her finest work.
She soon learned to love literature of the dramatic persuasion, and earned a B.A. in theater from the College of the Holy Cross. After graduation, she set out to prove that her degree was, in fact, not useless, and worked as a principal actor in a summer Shakespeare festival and as a theater teacher, directing over thirty productions and numerous workshops for youth and high school students. She spent several years as the theater director at Wakefield High School where she also taught English literature and public speaking. It was in her classroom that she discovered the horrible truth: a disturbingly large percentage of high school students hate to read. This revelation devastated and bewildered her. She decided she wanted to do something about it, and thus she started work on her first young adult novel, Spirit Legacy: Book 1 of the Gateway Trilogy, which has gone on to win awards from Chanticleer Book Reviews and Media and The Independent Publisher Book Awards. She is also the author of three one act plays, one of which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
E.E. Holmes lives in central Massachusetts with her husband, two children, and small, but surprisingly loud dog. When not writing, she enjoys watching unhealthy amounts of British television, procrastinating, and rediscovering her favorite books from her childhood all over again with her kids.
I'm generally not waiting for books. I try not to start a series until it is written. But ... I read the Gateway Trilogy, and now this spin-off series, and I've had to wait! I had signed up for the author's newsletter and followed her on Amazon, so I got the email a few days ago that the new book was out. Yea! AND available as a Kindle Prime Pick (also Kindle Unlimited). I immediately put down what I was reading, downloaded this book and started it up.
I love this author's writing. It just flows so naturally and really draws you into the story. And this starts with immediate action to pull you into this latest installment. And the action doesn't end, it just keeps going! Loved being back with Jess's attitude and Milo's constant witty banter. Seriously, in other books, when the characters are constantly spouting off clever lines, I feel the author is trying too hard. That no one is that witty off the top of their head. I'm sure that could be said here too... but everything flows so smoothly from Jess and Milo, I accept, and love it all.
I adore how each of these books has it's own arc, it's own storyline, which is completed in the one book. There are the things that flow through everything, tying it all together, but never leaving us hanging at the end.
Thumbs up ... and again, as soon as the next book drops, I'll be reading it!
I am enjoying reading this series. I felt Book 5 was a little slow to start, but once it got going it was a page turner. All our favourite, and not so favourite, characters are up to their usual tricks of causing havoc or saving the day. I was pleased to see Finn make a comeback in this book because of the chemistry between him and Jess. Bring on the next one!
Thank you thank you thank you for finally wrapping up a few loose ends that has been dragging on for quite a few books now! I was ready to give up at this point. There’s still more to come, obviously, but at least it wasn’t a major cliffhanger. I actually like the fact that although there may be a new character introduced here and there throughout the books, for the most part they’re not kept on as features and generally get wrapped up one way or another. The main characters that are included in the series has, so far, had excellent development and growth. At this point, I will be continuing on with the series. Although this is #5, there were 3 previous books that actually kicked this off. A lot of times by the 4th and 5th, the whole series starts to ramble into too many directions and begins to lose focus of the premise to begin with. Glad to see this is actually coming back together at this point.
This is by far one of my favourite YA series I have read. I remember back when I discovered the original Gateway Trilogy through Kindle Unlimited and fell in love with these characters. This series keeps getting better and better with each book, and always leaves me wanting more at the end. Although we are 8 books in now (if you count the trilogy), the stories and characters do not feel like they are getting old. In fact I cannot wait to see what happens next! Book 5 was brilliant, as we learn more about Jess and Hannah's gifts, more about the Durupinen bonds with spirits, and more about the Necromancers and what they may be plotting. It also answered so questions regarding what happened to certain characters n Portraits of the Forsaken. The books always take an unexpected turn which leaves you guessing. I am very much looking forward to book 6!
I think I am still sitting on my seat... I mean it might just be the edge of it but I'm still sitting on it!
My heart was still broken from that ending but I am as dedicated to Jess and her life as she is by this point and I may as well be her shadow. I want her to succeed and I want her to be happy and at the beginning of Heart of the Rebellion I didn't know if she was going to get to be truly happy. But in true Jess fashion she still lives life the only way she knows how... full throttle. She will never do things half a$$ed, she goes into it all whole heartedly.
This story had my emotions all over the place, I was so invested I completely forgot the world existed at a few points. And I just wanted to know what happened next. And I wasn't disappointed at any turn. Maybe shocked, maybe furious, maybe joyous but never disappointed.
I love this series (continuation from The gateway trilogy) and this book didn’t disappoint! The series just keeps getting better & better! The writing just draws you in, and you fall in love w/ all the characters. Action, drama, love, laughter… you feel it all! I was crying, laughing out loud, holding my breath. What a ride! I love that there is always a new challenge to overcome, and it generally gets resolved by the end of the book. It’s so satisfying! I’ve given up on other series that just dragged on and never went anywhere - this series is not like that! I’m starting book 6 now. Keep them coming!
I started with the Gateway trilogy and had to immediately start the Gateway Trackers. I can't write a review on her books that hold me captive and continue to read one after another. Her writing flows so easily, and holds my attention paragraph after paragraph. I'm in awe of how she comes up with so many different situations and how they are solved. Never was interested in the paranormal, but her idea of what it is so much more entertaining. I could go on and on but I have some reading to do!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as part of the wider series. It was past paced and exciting as Jess dives further into her abilities as a Seer and the fight of good versus evil ramps up. Jess and Catriona's working relationship develops further as the Trackers take on another mystery and fight to protect the Durupinen society.
I don't think you could easily read this book as a standalone. It does touch on the back story and things that have happened in previous books, but to get a full understanding of the story, you need to start from the start. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Beautiful work. The details of the book are so real you forget you are only reading a book instead of being there in person! The emotions the actors portray feel so real as well. I loved the periphery coming to pass and the realization that it wasn’t what it seems, it was better! I’m sure book 6 will show how the law will change between Durupinen and chamonoire and that will be great to watch unravel!
I love a well written series that goes on and on while keeping me wanting the next book NOW 😁😀
Am very much enjoying the Gateway Tracker Series....and if you're reading this review while deciding, start with Book 1 of the Legacy Series! Fun characters and wild adventures with surprising twists in a series that's good for readers from Teens to Seniors. I def promise that this series by EE Holmes will keep you entertained!
Too often, series get a sense of repetitiveness that tires me out. I push my way through to offset the cost of the book and then convince myself to avoid to series going forward. However, that's not the case with this series; each installment holds true to previous tales but provides new and entertaining action that hooks you in. Just as I think "this can't get more interesting...", I am pulled back into the well scripted story line. Highly recommended.
Jess is dropped into a situation full of surprises. She finds people who aid her and betray. She receives help from unexpected people and finds others who were held captive in the Priosun. Hannah and Milo are steadfast in their help for Jess as are Finn, Lucida, Fiona, Celeste and Karen. A former enemy returns. This book contains a lot of information related to the past and future events. I look forward to the next book.
Good installment, it was nice to see some character development with Catriona and Fiona. Would love to see one of the books told from Hannah's viewpoint, because Jessica is kind of becoming extremely predictable. The rest of the story is good as usual, but her moves are always the same. I wonder where the story is going to go from this, hopefully this isn't going to continuously be a necromancer vs duripinen war constantly
E.E. Holmes has done it yet again! Another fast paced page turning story you can't put down! Wild plot with lots of twists and turns. Great storyline with all the thrills you expect. And if course another adventure with characters who are like old friends.
Jess and Hannah and all th eir friends are constantly in a mess of on type of another, they have learned so much in such a short time about their lives and abilities are best when they are confident and a group of everyone cooperating and working together!! Can't wait to see them update the laws and give those working the closest their ackowledgment!!
I really like this series. Jess, Hannah, Milo, Finn, Savannah, Karen, Fiona, Catriona, just to name a few with each having a good strong character. I like that each book has a storyline all of it’s own and plenty excitement that keeps you turning page after page. If you enjoy paranormal books I really recommend this entire series. I’m off to start book 6 and am excited to see what happens next.
I read all 7 Gateway Trackers seris within 3 weeks. E. E. Holmes is an awesome writer and I so wish she would write more books like these. Absolutely fascinating and gripping. All of the books in the Gateway Trackers were 4 **** reading. They are exciting, haunting, mysterious, and so imaginative. I loved every single one of them and I recommend all of them. You won't be able to put them down.
I enjoyed the story however a little confused because it seems like the story was more about Jess and it was about the sisterhood and it doesn’t really give an understanding of Charlie right now he really was involved and how the necromancers took over the prison
I liked that the characters deal with their situations by not leaving behind their past, but how they accept the importance of remaining connected to the Durupinen legacy but are taking steps forward to improve the outdated laws and protocols. Moving forward and embracing but being less dependent on “how we’ve always done it” thinking.
I continue to love this series and this may be my favorite book thus far. Holmes continues to add layers and expand the world of the Durupinen. In this book we get an inside look to the prison of the Northern Clans, the Priosun. This is one of the faster paced books with a lot going on at once. If you are questioning reading this as the next book of the series, do it! It is well worth the read!
Both the best and the worse of human behaviour are shown in this book. Enjoyed as much as the previous four but feel the event it led up to could have been expanded. There are however little added details that you know will relate to the next part of the story. Definitely worth reading.
My mother lent me the the first 3 and I had a hard time committing it he time to read. But now I can’t stop. I want to read every second of my free time!! The series is so entertaining and exciting. It’s well written. I love every character. “Oi mate”
A plus!!!The world that has been created in this book is beyond fascinating and quite compelling. Characters are rich and well defined. You can't ask for more or can you. I can definitely ask for the next book!!!
This book is just as good as the others. Can’t wait to see what happens next at Fairhaven. So glad I found this series. Not sure how well I will cope with waiting for the next book so hopefully it won’t be too long!
I tried to drag this one out as long as possible as I didn't want it to end, who knows how long I'll have to wait for the next one to be out? As usual, this book lived up to all expectations and was thoroughly gripping and also as usual I felt utterly bereft on finishing it!
I fell in love with the series on the recommendation of a friend. Take my advice- read this series! Trust me you won't be sorry. Well played E E Holmes, well played. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I do love this series and this story line was great but I dropped a star because I personally felt the ending was rushed through. There was so much build up over 2 books and then they just skimmed right over the action at the end. But still looks forward to reading the next one.
I loved this installment and the character development was amazing. Jess's seer abilities are growing and an old enemy returns to try and make amends, but will it last? I highly recommend reading this series in order.
Jess is again at the forefront of the Gateway Trackers, growing and learning and stretching every limit. All of the characters are in their place, everyone where they should be. Life is changing at Fairhaven, I'm ready for the next installment.
