They’ve never met, but their paths run in the same direction—home for the holidays. Yet their reasons for leaving are as different as the reasons they return.
Meeting by chance along a 1400 mile stretch of highway when a snowstorm grinds traffic to a halt, they have no choice but to jointly ride it out.
Exposing a common thread, leading them from the past to the present, it’s through the innocent eyes of a toddler, they discover a future.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
My jawline is definitely softening, and I don't even want to get going on what's happening under my original chin. Since I discovered a long hair where it most definitely does not belong, I've avoided getting too close to a mirror.
There are so many reasons anything between us would not be a good idea, but with his tongue in my mouth, I couldn't think of a single one.
Montana Memphis Romer… My full name… My father’s dream has always been to go fly-fishing in Montana, and Mom is a big Elvis fan, with a wish to visit Memphis before she dies. I’m my parents’ walking, talking bucket list.
“We’ll make it work,” I promise her, lifting my head to look her in the eye. “I can’t tell you where this road is taking us, but I can assure you I don’t want to get off.”
My Review:
LuLLay was an endearing and entertaining early holiday read with a precious toddler and an arduous and icy road trip that led to a spicy romance and crusty family drama and ended with a highly satisfactory HEA and a brief visit with my old friends at Scully’s. It also yields my new BBF named Matt, I seem to be quite fickle lately but I’ve been lucky in my book selections. One method of ensuring an enjoyable read is to follow skillful authors I adore and Freya Barker is near the top of that list as her easy to follow and engaging writing has never let me down. I wasn’t familiar with the peculiarities of the Laestadian Lutheran religion and can now boast to my prissy mother of yet another educational experience, and a religious one at that, which was gleaned from my silly hobby. So much for her claim that reading fiction was a waste of time ~ smirk.
LuLLaY: Portland ME, a Christmas Novella (Portland ME #4.5) by Freya Barker is a contemporary holiday romance novella and is the PERFECT heartwarming, sexy and HEA holiday read for the season. Even though this is part of the Portland ME series, it can easily be read as a standalone.
Matteo “Matt” Savela is a bartender at the Skipper, who has watched all his friends find their perfect matches, but he does not feel it is in the cards for him. Matt is on his way home to pick up his sister. Driving across country during December can lead to unexpected snow storms and chance meetings.
Montana “Tana” Memphis Romer is driving across country with her three year old toddler, Flynn. She decided to drive across country rather than fly because Flynn has an ear infection. Tana wants to get home for Christmas and help her parents with some major decisions about their family bakery.
Tana and Flynn keep crossing paths with “Man” (Flynn’s name for Matt) along the way. When a snow storm hits, they all end up sharing hotel suite until it blows over. Matt loves all kids and he and Flynn bond quickly. Tana is not so sure, but with all the kind things he does for them and the way he takes care of them she begins to care for Matt as much as her daughter.
With all the chance meetings and the same destinations, can fate be putting these two together for more?
Matt is the hero that every single mom would want to meet. Tana is an independent business woman and single mother. Flynn is too adorable and I could not get enough of her. These three come together, even with all the many real life problems to be solved before their HEA. The relationship comes together quickly, but it never feels forced. The sex scenes are yummy. All of the secondary characters are three dimensional and believable.
I always love Freya Barker’s characters! I want to be friends with all of them and I am always happy with their HEAs. The stories could happen anywhere and I just fall into the first scene and never want to put it down until I am done. This is another great read from this author!
When Matt and Tana keep running into each other as they travel towards the same destination, they both recognize an attraction between them. But when nature takes control and fate throws a final hurrah, they have the opportunity to not only get to know one another better, but to take things one step further. Unfortunately, fate hasn’t taken into consideration that this couple have individual complications that make being together impossible.
I loved Matt. He was so perfect with Tana’s little girl, Flynn. I swear I swooned everytime he interacted with her. And when he steps up to help Tana out I fell head over heels in love with him. He’s the type of man every woman, at least in my opinion, wants in her life. Someone faithful, loyal, dependable and a stalwart presence when life gets you down.
Tana was a strong, independent heroine but she wasn’t stubborn to the point of not recognize when she needed a helping hand. She has a lot on her plate and struggles trying to figure out how to make it all work. When Matt enters her life she sees what she wants but finds herself at a loss how to go for it.
This book wouldn’t be as sweet were it not for Flynn. This little girl absolutely stole my heart even as she swept into Matt’s. Instead of being a place holder in the story, this author brought her alive and inserted her directly into what was building between Matt and Tana.
While this isn’t a long read, it had everything required to make it perfect. With some serious steam between Matt and Tana, a little drama regarding the obstacles they faced, and secondary characters that added to the overall effect of those obstacles, I can see this book being a reread throughout future holiday seasons.
I'm a bit out of season but I really wanted to read this Christmas novella. Our hero, Matt works at the Skipper, a bar the Portland ME series is centered around. He's driving a long way to go pick up his sister from their extremely, religious parents who are trying to marry her off to a much, older man from the church. On his way, fate has him running into single mom, Tana and her 3 year old daughter Flynn when they need him the most.
It's a heartwarming tale of instant love from a couple who thought love wasn't in the cards for them. Matt is a very protective and thoughtful hero. Tana is a strong, independent woman who didn't know how much she was missing until Matt came into her life. Then you have this adorable 3 year old girl who instantly bonds with Matt and will make your heart melt.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Faith failed him. Ambition drove her. Serendipity brought them together. They've never met, but their paths run in the same direction-home for the holidays. Yet their reasons for leaving are as different as the reason they return. Meeting by chance along a 1400 mile stretch of highway when a snowstorm grinds traffic to a halt, they have no choice bu to jointly ride it out. Exposing a common thread, leading them from the past to the present, it's through the innocent eyes of a toddler, they discover a future.
Get ready to give your heart to Tana and Matt and we can not forget her daughter Flynn. Matt and Tana are on separate journey's. Then a storm has them thrown together in the most unexpected way. These two have a insta-love connection that will have your heart melting and you swooning at the same time. This is the perfect read to get you in the Christmas spirit and believing in love that was fated from the very beginning.
This is a Christmas novella in the Portland series but can be read as a standalone. I have not read any of this series but this gave me a taster, so needing to read the other books now!
Matt and Tana are strangers travelling a long journey when strangely they keep meeting up on the way to their destination. Something magical happens in the air that keep bringing these two together.
This was a little of an insta romance which is nothing to be sniffed at, especially at Christmas time when special things can happen. The read was very atmospheric with the road trip and the inclement weather adding to the Christmas theme. This was all about love and family and how family can be a multitude of meanings to all.
I loved that Tana was a bit of a cougar (seven years age gap I recall) but Matt is an all take charge kind of man, it was easy to see how Tana fell for him. Both have some family issues to sort out and I liked that they were both there for each other when drama came knocking at the door to their little love bubble.
A quick and engaging read that put in in the cosy Christmassy mood on a cold and wintery day. Lovely. Just lovely. Four stars.
ARC kindly provided by the author to Foxylutely Books
LULLAY is a wonderful winter/holiday romance with a couple whose authenticity and sincerity leaps off the pages.
Matt and Tana are separately taking road trips and cross paths a couple of times as they’re following a similar route. Fate brings them together when bad weather strands them at the same hotel.
Both Matt and Tana are at a reflective point in their lives. They’re remembering their history, taking stock of their current situation and thinking of what the future might hold. For a novella-length read, I felt the author was able to give the characters a good level of depth. I enjoyed getting to know them individually and as a couple. Their love story is appealing and hopeful.
There is great chemistry between the two but it’s not a hot-and-heavy read because there’s a cute little cherub in the form of Tana’s daughter Flynn who is part of this charming trio. I loved how Matt took to Flynn from the start. For him, the allure was Tana as a woman, Flynn as a sweet child, and Tana and Flynn as a team he wanted to join.
Freya does it again I read the Portland series a long time ago, but if you’ve read Freya you know those friends never leave your mind Matt, what an unbelievable man, Tana & Flynn are perfect for him Such a sweet love story, and makes me want to go back and reread this series again Thank you freya ♥️
It is October 30th and I am already in full holiday mode. Don't judge me. I was looking through my kindle thinking what should I read next when I saw this gem sitting there are pretty. Then I remembered, OMG this is the Freya Barker holiday novella! So obviously I sprained my finger tapping it to open immediately. And can I just say? This is the best Christmas themed book I've read in I don't know how long. SERIOUSLY. So GOOD!
Story Line: Matt is a longtime bartender. Tana is a well established business owner with the cutest 3 year old daughter. They meet by accident several times. 3 to be exact. Each time their interactions are even more adorable than the last. Until finally, as mother nature would have it, they are forced to spend more than just a smidge of time together. And in that time, things escalate and an unbreakable bond between the 3 forms. It's beautiful. It's uplifting. And it's everything a Christmas romance should be.
Along the way, there are bumps in the road, crazy amounts of snow and some pretty incredible family moments. You see, Matt and Tana have pretty much opposite family types. One is close knit, the other is damaged to say the least. And its those families that truly bring these two together. And although their time together is brief, the connection is permanent and no amount of time or distance can change that. Did I say that I love this story yet? Yes? Well, I'll say it again. This story warmed my soul and put tingles in my toes.
Interaction: Matt is in his late 30's. Tana is in her early 40's. (Can I just say how much I LOVE this about FB books? Her characters are always older than early 20's, straight out of college, etc) Anyways, these two are not crazy young. They're established in their lives - been through enough drama and experiences to know what they want. There are no games here. They acknowledge their connection and give in to it - in super naughty ways, might I add. I guess what I'm trying to say is, thanks to these two being over the age of 30, they are mature enough to handle a relationship like the adults they are. They show us that family isn't always related by blood. And that bond is the strongest of them all.
Laundry: If you're worried about a possible lack of laundry due to the whole "novella" length, don't you worry your pretty little head. Matt and Tana are so dang hot. Like off the charts. They don't have to do all the kinky, raunchy stuff to steam up the shower, if you know what I mean. But side note, can we take a moment to appreciate that shower scene? Good grief. I need a cold shower after reading that. So hot!
Depth: I'm going to be super honest with y'all here. I had no idea this was a novella. I mean, I finished it super fast, but I'm also a speed reader who's afraid her kids are going to interrupt her reading so I have to inhale all the words as fast as I can. But other than that, I didn't know it was a shorter book because it still had everything I'm looking for. There was drama - family drama to be exact. There was angst, lust, incredible holiday moments, and big decisions to be made. This story was absolutely perfect. I fell in love with Tana, Matt and especially sweet Flynn. 5 huge, sparkly stars!
Another beautiful and enchanting story. I loved it, especially Matt!
OMG that story has left me with a good old dose of the warm fuzzies. There’s something about a man taking on the care and love of a fatherless child that just calls to my psyche.
I’ve been wondering when Matt would receive his own HEA. Having been a stalwart at The Skipper, the bar where all of the other captivating Portland ME stories have been based around, Matt always seemed a little left out, but all that changes when he drives across the country to rescue his sister from his family of religious zealots.
Driving anywhere at Christmas is not without its challenges, especially with the anticipated inclement weather, but trying to undertake a drive like that with a young child who has an ear infection would break the strongest of mothers. Tana (Montana) is just such a mother but thankfully for her, she repeatedly comes across a stranger (Matt) who is more than ready to help her and her daughter, Flynn, out.
The first meeting was unexpected, the second downright freaky as both Tana and Matt find their paths crossing again. When it happens for the third time you have to say fate has definitely played a part.
Tana and Flynn are a really sweet pair and Flynn is beyond adorable. Add Matt to the mix and my heart just about exploded with happiness. I was expecting the bond between Tana and Matt to add the backbone to this story but for me, Flynn and Matt’s relationship was what I found myself wanting more of.
As expected with this series, there are family and emotional problems abound and the main one this time seem to be surrounding Matt’s sister who I hope will get to tell her own story at a future point. Although Tana is not without her fair share of struggles where her father’s health is concerned.
This is a seriously good series and definitely one that I would recommend. I feel able to relate to the character’s ages more easily and also to their emotional struggles which perhaps is why I’m drawn to the series. I also loved the fact that Tana is older than Matt and yet she rocks her confidence levels and is more than happy to take on a younger man!
Whilst reflecting on existing characters from the Portland ME series, this book can definitely be read as a stand-alone without impacting on the other stories.

Freya Barker takes us back to the Portland ME series in this Christmas novella. Matt finally gets a story, YAY for all fans of this series. While on his way home to get his sister, Matt ends up running into Tana and her daughter not once, not twice, but three times on this massive road trip. What are the odds? When they both end up stranded due to a snow storm and forced to share the only room left for miles, Matt gets a glimpse of the life he hasn't had the chance to get, one that he didn't think he would ever have. But is it too soon to start thinking of a long term relationship with Tana, after all its not just her heart on the line, it would be her daughter's as well.
This was such a nice story. I loved having a glimpse back into the Portland ME world again. This was a sweet, not huge on Christmas which was perfect for me, story; with a bit of drama, some steamy naughty times, and a few laughs. I give this 4 stars.
Matt and Montana (Tana) meet by chance on a cross country road trip, but fate seems to have plans for them as they inexplicably cross paths twice more along the way. Throw in a dose of adorable in the form of Tana's 3 year old precocious bundle of energy Flynn and you have the recipe for Lullay!
Matt has been working at The Skipper for years and has become part of the family there. He managed to escape a ridiculously rigid and overbearing religious upbringing in Minnesota but was forced to leave his younger sister behind. Now she has finally had enough and has reached out to Matt for help so he sets off from Maine in the hopes he can reach her by Christmas. He doesn't plan for a huge snowstorm along his route though which seriously slows him down.
Tana is traveling from MA to Duluth to check on the true magnitude of her dad's health problems and to help run the family's bakery to get through the holidays. A cranky toddler was definitely not part of the plan but an ear infection striking made that a reality for her. Tana is stunned when her daughter immediately takes to the handsome man who offers his help at the gas station but doesn't think much about the random encounter as she gets back on the road... until they cross paths again at a random restaurant along the way and again as a major storm turns the roads treacherous.
They have the ability to get to know each other in a bit of a bubble as they are stranded together in a hotel thanks to the storm, and they both quickly start to fall for the other. But real life waits to intrude and Tana starts to overthink things. Once again that tricky thing called Fate steps in to help them along.
I really loved both Matt and Tana! Yes they fall hard and fast but it all felt right and very real. Flynn was an absolutely adorable part of the story too. I don't have to words to sufficiently describe how much I loathe Matt's sperm donor, especially after the true magnitude of his impact on Matt's life is revealed, but loved Matt's parting words to him:
"A real man worships his family before his God, and the love he receives in return is his ultimate reward."
Amen Matt! Lullay was a great, heartwarming read with wonderful characters that I thoroughly enjoyed!
I am a fairly recent fan of Ms. Barker's books and this is my first in the Portland ME series. I know, a bit backwards, but it can be read as a standalone too. It definitely picked my curiosity to go and start the series from the beginning. I want to know more about the rest of the characters. What I like about the story is the natural progression and the feel of 'real'ness. I could identify and feel with the characters, cheer them on and laugh or cry with them, be mad with/for them. Tana is such a strong heroine and brave too, her daughter Flynn is so sweet and I couldn't help but fall for Matt, he is everything a hero should be... protective, strong with a heart of gold, patient. The secondary characters added depth to the story each in their own way. Tana's parents cracked me up, they also made my heart warm how they accepted Matt and Leena. Thank you, Ms. Barker for another great story
I received an ARC, I have also purchased my own copy. Now to the beginning of the series ;)
I really liked LuLLaY by Freya Barker it would be one of the many books that I've read by her and I know there will be more in my kindle in the future , this would be the fist one that I have read in the Portland me series and it makes me want to read more in the series .This was definitely a book that gets you in the mood for the holidays and it was the perfect romance .
Loved it! My fave of the books I have read by this author. Flynn had my heart with every "Man" she said. Matt and Tana's romance worked so well for me that I just wanted more. I enjoyed how they met. And then when they met their respective parents, watch out! Every encounter, meeting, sexy scene, and funny one melted my heart and piqued my interest.
Everything worked and clicked for me. Plenty of feels. I highly recommend it.
Note: I read an advance reading copy. I also preordered a copy.
They’ve never met, but their paths run in the same direction—home for the holidays. Yet their reasons for leaving are as different as the reasons they return.

Exposing a common thread, leading them from the past to the present, it’s through the innocent eyes of a toddler, they discover a future.
This book was amazing! This book was a fast pace, sweet and gets you into the Christmas spirit. I love how Matt and Tana met and how they didn’t give up. And the love that he had for his sister to want to protect her and I can’t forget about little Flynn I can’t leave her out. Love her little spunk. Can’t wait to see what comes next from Freya Barker.
I 110% (maybe more) LOVED this story!!! Why, oh why, is it a novella?!?!? Seriously, this book was amazing for a novella. Usually I think a good novella is great, but this one is AMAZING! I absolutely fell in love with Matt, Tana and Tana's sweet daughter. If I wasn't already married and he was real, Matt would be the guy I would want.
These two (three) meet by chance 3 times while they are traveling half way across the country. Matt saves the girls and they all end up together in the last hotel room at a local hotel near the site of the accident. Fate! There is more to this story, but you NEED to read it. Seriously. You will not be disappointed.
I highly recommend this one!
Freya, please write more about these characters! Maybe her daughter (who I still can't remember her name) can be all grown and now dating....
I am lucky enough to have read this absolutely brilliant, heartwarming story already. Even though I've read LuLLay, just reading the synopsis for it makes me want to dive right back into it over and over again......not only that, even though I've read the Portland ME series, I'm now reading them again. Whether you are new to Freya, new to her Portland ME series or you're familiar with her books, this book is certainly sure to draw you into Tana, Matt and Flynn's world. Despite being a Portland ME series novella, it can completely be read as a standalone.....BUT I bet once you've read it you'll want to read the entire series, even if you've read them already! Freya Barker is an author who manages to capture my heart, mind and soul with her exceptional stories!
Beautiful Christmas novella! Love it so much. Freya writes beautiful romances of mature couples and I freaking love that. Matt was such an amazing man. I freaking love how he was with little Flynn. So caring with his girls. Loved that we got a little of Syd and Gunnar. I only wish for more, but I understand it’s a novella and hope to see a book about Leena in the future.
As a reader who loved the Portland ME series, I was super excited for Matt to get his story. I understand the series was more portrayed as the journey the ladies had gone through to fight back to find happiness, but it isn't always the woman who have to fight for life and happiness, sometimes life can break down men just the same. Matt is a perfect example of this. This novella can totally be read as a stand alone, but be prepared to have a desire to start the series from the beginning and finding a whole family to love.
As Matt sets out on this journey to his home town to bring his sister Leena out to the grasp of the religious beliefs of his family. He finds his emotions on high alert, he always wished he could have taken her with him all those years ago but she was just too young. Now she has asked him to come and help her leave. Travelling at Christmas is always hard but he is willing to do anything for Leena.
Tana is excited to be headed home for the holidays to spend some time with her parents, give them some much needed time with Flynn. She is not looking forward to the travel with a cranky toddler who isn't feeling quite up to par. Discussing her fathers health and helping him to see that he needs to slow down a bit is not high on the excitement list but must be done.
A few chance meetings, and storm that halts traffic is the perfect opportunity to spend some time getting to know each other. Watching Matt bend over backwards to included Flynn and keep her happy while giving Tana a break, only makes Matt more attractive. While feelinga come out of nowhere and are fast and hard, they are a true sense of home and belonging for people who never really felt a sense of belonging.
Why a novella? I always struggle with novella's because it never seems like enough time for these characters. I always want more. Matt, Montana and Flynn have taken my heart and I want more time with time.... It was a the perfect warm and fuzzies for a holiday romance.

Anyone who doesn't believe in the magic of the season should read this book! Let Matt and Tana fill you with so much joy, you couldn't help but feel happy. The last thing Matt wants to be doing is going home for Christmas, least of all after years away. But when your little sister calls, big brothers will always come. What he didn't expect was for happiness to have found him in the shape of a mother and child who happen to be heading the same way he is. Tana never thought she would be the single mother running an empire to be, yet here she is with Flynn in tow. She especially didn't think she would find her hero at a gas station on the side of the highway. When fate keeps bringing them together, how could she deny it was meant to be? Matt and Tana will reignite your faith in destiny. Their love proves that when you're meant to be, life has a funny way of bringing you together. I fell in love with their journey from page one. Matt reminds you that father's and partners come in all different shapes and when the right one comes, nothing else will matter. Tana will show you how love is always where you least expect it and if you let it come, it will bring wild joy to your life. Freya has once again completely amazed me with her ability to write authentic and realistic characters. She writes about real women, beautiful flaws and all and I can't get enough of it! Easy 10 out 5 stars! You will absolutely love this!! 5/5
I have to start off by saying thank you to the author for giving me an ARC to read and review. I have read a few books by this author now and very much enjoy them. LuLLaY is a novella in the Portland ME series, but it's not an issue if you haven't read that yet. Matt is on his way to pick up his sister from the not so loving family he also grew up in. Who know that trip would become so much more. Tana is on her way to see her parents to get her Dad to calm down after doctors have told him to. A snowstorm throws off Matt and Tana's plans and they keep running into each other. It's like it's meant to be. I am normally not a fan of instalove, but the romance and connection between Matt and Tana just felt right. I loved the humor and romance. Tana's little firl' Flynn, completed this story. On top of that, this story is a perfect holiday reas. No drama and it leaves a smile on my face. I would love to read more about these characters. And I will definitely be looking into the Portland ME series!
I was pulled right into this short story. The story has laughs, twists & turns, secrets, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first From Dust (Portland ME #1) Cruel Water (Portland ME #2) Through Fire (Portland ME #3) Still Air (Portland ME #4)
This is Tana and Matt’s story. Matt met Tana on the road. When he helped her out with putting gas in her car. During there travels they run into each other a few times. He rescues her again and they end up snowed in together. After spending time together and getting to know each other they both fall but they think they can’t have each other. As they go their separate ways they think they will not meet up again. But when one of the needs the other one they drop everything to help. Can they make a future work?
I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
We meet Matt, Sydney, Gunner, Tana, Flynn, and Matt's sister. Where do we meet these folks? What happens when Matt runs into Tana and three different occasions in different places? What does he start to think? What does Tana start thinking about Matt? Where are the places they run into each other? The more I learn about Matt, the more impressed I am. How he takes on making sure life is secure and safe for everyone involved really takes a strong man. Especially when those people are strangers. You really need to read this story. It is a very sweet romance! The title of the book meant nothing to me at first, then as I read it, I finally understood the title. Now I want to listen to what it represents. Enjoy the read!

LuLLaY by Freya Barker (one of my Unicorn authors), is the sweet, sexy love story between Matt and Tana (Montana) that has stolen my heart and is CHOCK FULL of ALL the feels! It's a novella, but it is so well written, in Freya's distinctive style, that it reads like a novel! There is the PERFECT amount of back-story that you don't feel like this gorgeous love story is rushed in any way....and can we talk about that little scene-stealer, Flynn? A wonderful novella that takes you back to world of Portland ME, where we get to find out Matt’s story. Matt is on a return journey to his childhood home and along the way meets Tana & her adorable little girl Flynn. Their paths cross and cross again and the result gives us this novella. Loved the check in to The Skipper Lullay is written with everything you expect from a Freya Barker Book, and the perfect Christmas read
Charming Christmas (ish) shorter story by Freya Barker who’s stories are always a good read. Coincidences kept happening bring characters into contact and their story evolved from there. Though Strong the H was also nurturing, nicely balanced and a good part of the story line. Advanced copy provided however I have purchased my own copy, well worth the cost
