Ethan Siegel is in love. Tonight he’s going to ask Alice’s parents for permission to marry her. There’s just one hitch. Ethan and Alice broke up two years ago—and she’s in a serious relationship with someone else. But Ethan is undaunted. An irresistible comedy about modern love and the need to go back in order to move forward.
Started out thinking this play reminded me a bit of Reckless by Craig Lucas. By scene 9 all I could think of was Wonderful World by Richard Dresser (which I loathed). Was looking for some sort of analogy to politics and could only come up with “two candidates”. Bernie? Clinton? Trump? Ethan? Nelson? Quick detour into “maybe it’s about women choosing a career over a relationship” town. That stop didn’t last long. By the time I arrived in ***SPOILER**** “Jordan/Ethan engagement” town I was lost. What this play is about is an unknown to me.
