Darkness Bites #1

A Bitten Curse

Rate this book
A failed mission and a cursed vampire bite? Calling it a bad day would be an understatement.

Vampires may have come out of the shadows to join society, but despite what some fang-lovers might say, I know how dangerous they truly are. As part of a paranormal investigations unit with the Chicago PD, my team was sent undercover to track a coven travelling to London. Now, my team is gone - probably dead - and my old life is too. Worst of all? In the attack that ruined everything I was bitten by a vampire king and somehow a mental link was formed between us. I can’t get him out of my head - literally.

I go by Charlie Rose now and I’ve only got two goals:

1) Find out what happened to my team.
2) Do whatever it takes to make the bloodsucker who cursed me with his bite regret the day he attacked me.

The first will be a challenge. The second is surprisingly easy. Mix two parts whiskey with three parts sex with shifters and you get one very pissed off vampire.

Look out bloodsucker, here I come.

A Bitten Curse is the first book in Nicole Marie's dark paranormal suspense series, Darkness Bites. These books contain racy themes and are intended for a mature audience. To learn more about what you can expect from Nicole Marie's books, click on her author name and visit her profile!

Um what?

Very little plot, very little character development, a lot of sex. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

'Shifter' romance is so popular; this is my first attempt at reading it and I don't get it. What does it even mean to be a shifter? None of these shifters shape-shifted even once! I thought they were going to be like werewolves! I thought the sex scenes were gonna get kinky! But when the heroine meets Pete the Panther... Pete the Panther... I mean, c'mon! You can't call a man Pete the Panther and expect him to be sexy! Anyway, when the heroine meets Pete the Panther they just end up in a pretty average orgy, and there's nothing remotely pantheric about him, except perhaps slightly feline eyes?

I've been swindled.

I'm also feeling sorry for the other woman in the orgy, who didn't seem to have much to do except watch. I feel like she was only included so that it would sound a bit more adventurous. Another woman in the orgy.. oh my!

Anyway, the sex wasn't great but the plot was worse. The whole book could've done with a good editor to cut out all the extraneous rambling about the heroine walking about the streets, making food, having showers, endlessly ruminating about her dire situation etc. etc. etc. The whole thing felt like an extended first chapter, leading you up to the cliffhanger which was the first real plot development and also the end of the book.

The heroine was highly implausible as an international professional vampire hunter, given that she was also a mopey whiner. I have a real hatred for female characters that are set up as 'hard as nails' or 'badass' and then lack the spine to even tell an annoying stranger at the bar to bugger off.
The hero - some kind of wolf man, but again, lacking all lupine qualities - had very little personality beyond wanting to sleep with the heroine. And the vampire, as far as I can tell, had been listening to too much My Chemical Romance.

The book was not half bad. But it had a few bad points which unfortunately i think overshadow the good ones.

The direction of the storyline was quite good and promising.

This is the good point.

My main issue i had with this book is the character development. Or lack thereof, to be exact.

OK, maybe the same applies to the plot itself, which definitely could have been developed more and should have at least had a climax as far as the action and storyline are concerned.

The characters felt flat. Usually i get quite a good grasp them and can easily imagine everything as i read. Think like a movie going going on inside your head as soon as your brain processes the words. With this book? Nada. I didn't have much to work with in therms of substance. I couldn't build anything from the characters' actions because there was no subtlety. The author delivered everything like a statement and there was nothing to make you try and grasp the intricacies of the character's personality because there were none existent in the first place.

I don't mind a bit of mystery in my books as long as it also had the necessary background to work with. Building up suspense, focusing on the world building, hinting at the background story,

This one? Umm... it kind of didn't.

The descriptions were severely lacking and well... not quite descriptive. There was nothing to make me really feel that the action took place in London aside from the book telling me it was in London. Imagine never being to UK and you have a random person tell you this:

And this is all you have to work it as far as finding out stuff about that country while you have to write a book about a chick that lives there. This is exactly how it felt while reading A Bitten Curse. You knew where everything was happening but that's about it. I am not sure if this was because of the lack of research or simply because of the general lack of descriptions, but it chaffed.

A lot.

The coven Master? Well, if you give me a 2000 year old vampire named Erik (with a "k" mind you), at least construct his personality befitting of a vampire and stick to it. I don't really see vampires that old starving themselves and sort of almost dying because they don't want to upset an American chick they're telepathically connected with.

I spoiled that one.
Oh well...

Warning regarding the ending for the folks who hate this kind of thing: the book ends with a cliffhanger.

Unfortunately yet again, it does not end with a cliffhanger that will make you want to die for the next book and desperately switch to amazon in order to buy it.

My advice for the MC: Charlie girl, please stop being so adventurous without a reason and start acting like you're not permanently PMSing as a mulish teenager.

That's a pretty sound advice, if i may say so myself.

Unless the author seriously ups her writing and works more on building up her plot, characters and descriptions, my opinion of whether i will try the next books in the series will remain this one:

Different but good

I was a little skeptical about this one going in. There's definitely a LOT of sexy time in this one. I have it on good authority that it turns RH in the third book but in this book Charlie is just having fun. All kinds of fun. I didn't love it but the end had me sucked in now and I'll be jumping into book 2 ASAP.

Spoilerish***y'all know I like to give the heads up on the sexy time situations so I'll go ahead and let you know there's some FF in here. It's BEFORE the relationship. Just when she's having fun. I guess it's more M/F/F/M.

I really enjoyed this book!
You have Charlie Rose who came from Chicago to England to hunt vampires, unfortunately something went wrong and all of her colleagues are missing. She was bitten by a vampire but she wasn't changed and she has no idea why. To make matters worse the vampire who bit her, Erik, has a direct link to her mind, something she has no control over.
She is no going through days trying to drink enough alcohol to drown out the feeling of Erik in her mind. She finds herself in a shifter bar and realizes that with sex she feels him even less. SO of course she goes around and has sex with everyone, wolves, bears and even panthers. It's exciting for her. Of course Erik can feel all this and he hates the idea of her being close to the animals in this way.
They did end it in a bit of a cliffhanger but we find out in the end that not only can Erik feel her in his mind but he refuses to eat because of what he thinks will happen to her.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

The story could have potential if there was something in this book. No actual plot, no character development, no action, no tension, nothing but an alcoholic and stupid MC, a foursome that add nothing to the story, a pathetic master vampire and an annoying werewolf.

A Bitten Curse is a story of a lost life and maybe a new beginning. Charlotte was once a successful member of a Chicago Paranormal Police Unit. One bite on a case in London and she has lost everything; her team, her job, her former life, her name, and to a large extent, her freedom. Charlie now lives in London bonded to a vampire, drinking her nights away trying to drown out his voice in her mind. Pissing off the vampire with her drunkeness is her only true goal in life until she figures out how much more upset he becomes when she has sex with a shifter, beautiful man named James. Now with her shifter-sexual awakening, she has a new life goal. She also gets a forced face to face with her vampire, Erik. The unrest she feels after their meeting, leads to a night wilder than her imagination could come up with with multiple shifters. Then surprisingly she ends the night with James.

The sex is unbelievably hot. The wild lust-filled night with multiple partners is the stuff of pure fantasy, but the passion with James is what every female dreams of. Two bodies made for each other, a man intent of your pleasure, unending stamina. Perfect erotica. And the connection that is building between the two makes it even better. Still she is linked to Erik and there's somethig terribly wrong. When she discovers what it is, she is devastated and feels guilty. But honestly not enough.

I love James. Even more I love Erik. He's definitely my favorite, so I am interested to see how this plays out. I am not a big fan of Charlie. She's a bit too self-centered. She's more self-destructive than the vampire is destructive towards her. She wallows and is vindictive. Yes, she got bit. Did she expect for the vampires to just allow her task force to come in and destroy them without a fight? I understand her anger and initial reaction, but after meeting Erik, she ignored the pull between them, his emotions, his love for her. And now realizing what Erik is doing to himself for her, she has to grasp that there are two sides to this link. She is not the only one who's life has been changed, possibly destroyed.

Nicole Marie has written an entertaining story with completely developed characters. There's passion, angst, suspense. I have been pulled in and with the cliffhanger (and teaser for book 2) I must know what happens next!

The story pulled me in from the start. It feels different from what I've read before and I'm not entirely sure where it's all going, but I'm insanely curious to find out.

So, Charlie was bitten by a vampire a few months ago, but she did not turn into one herself, as was expected of her. Instead, she remained human, but with a weird mind like between her and the vampire that bit her.
Right from the first time it was mentioned, I knew there was more to this connection that we were led to believe. And it irritate me to no end, the way Charlie behaved about this whole thing. I understand that she did not ask for the connection and that she's feeling angry and wants to lash out. Like, when she started feeling Erik's hunger and was like "dude, get out of my head, this is disgusting". Well, how do you think he feels every time you fuck someone? She just automatically assumed that it was Erik's fault, when in reality, it sounded like he was just as put out as she was. Though from his actions in the end, its obvious that he has at least some knowledge about this connection.

I don't know, it's all very confusing and I'm so intrigued as to how it will all play out. I'm grabbing the sequel right away.

Steamy and erotic!

Wowie wow that was a hot book! Very steamy in the sexy time department! I loved it; what I didn't really care for was the lack of progress in the story arc. So far, it seems our mc and a master vampire somehow tied themselves together and have basically mind melded. The Problem is that she was hunting him and can't remember exactly what happened (neither can he) but she blames it on him. He is clearly protecting her out of some misplaced honor and It's going to cost him his life. We shall see. Through the book she decided to sleep w shifters since she could feel it elicits all sorts of feelings from him and she's vindictive. Those sex scenes are hot hot hot and include an orgy. It seems to me she has a serious connection w a wolf shifter. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I'm eager to see what happens w the vampire. Also, more sex. Yum. It's definitely for nature audiences and expect for There to be a slow burn storyline to go along w what I think will be a slow burn romance between she and possibly two fellas.
Did I mention it has some steamy erotic scenes??

Oh Lordy I simply do not know where to begin when it comes to Nicole Marie’s A Bitten Curse (Darkness Bites Book 1). I guess the best place is the publisher’s blurb. Read it as it does give you a total sense of what’s going on without spoiling things. And what’s going on is pretty ‘freakin spectacular with wonderful trusts and turns and superb characters. It’s great as a thriller, as an adventure and, yes, as the start of the promised slow-burn reverse harem romance. Really the only negatives here are for those who either don’t like reverse harem action, no matter how well written (those readers should avoid this book) and those who don’t like the cliffhangers warned about (those readers should wait for the eventual boxset on series completion). For everyone else, come on in and wallow in this deliciousness. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

I read this book before it was revamped and I noticed some changes and they helped with the story/flow. I liked our MC, Charlie, and I like seeing the development of her love interest. I totally am pulling for certain people hahaha (I like how different at least 2 of the guys are). I thought James has some pretty adorable moments but dude could he turn on the smolder and heat! I am intrigued by Erik, because of what he is doing for Charlie and what I think they could be in the future (and how annoyed they make each other). And not involving those 2, I just have to acknowledge a certain scene....daaamn loved me some shifter smexy times 😍🔥🤤. I should have known better to read this during my lunch breaks at work haha.

I liked how we see Charlie grow just in the short time in this book. How she comes to understand what is really going on (I know there are still questions needing answering, but there are some reveals at the end) and to change her tune once she realizes what she has been doing to make things worse (yes cryptic, you will just have to read to find out). If book 2 is similar to what is what previously, I cannot wait to read it again ❤️.

“A Bitten Curse” could have been very good but doesn't live up to its potential.
American Charlotte 'Charlie' Joyce was a Paranormal Investigator with Chicago but her final mission to track down a vampire coven in London went badly wrong.
She woke up days later to find herself mentally linked to a vampire, Erik.
To keep him out of her mind she has turned to drink, a lot of it.
She can't go home and both craves and fears the linkage.
She's not a vampire but is she still completely human?
For some reason the author has chosen to include a gratuitous orgy – I've nothing against orgies except a wife and a bad back – which baffled me.
There doesn't seem to have been any editing and there are tense errors all the way through.
I picked out a few of the spelling oddities:-
“The vampire flew to his feat
I could’ve just followed your sent home.”
I had abandon ship”

MINOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I liked this book. It was short and fast paced. I actually ended up finishing it in one sitting. It didn't go the way I expected it to and there were a few things that happened that completely shocked me.
I don't know how to feel about Charlie yet. She makes some decisions that I don't agree with but at the end of the book, I felt like she saw the light and that what she was doing was wrong. I think she has a some growing to do before I will really like her though.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I will definitely be reading the next installment. I am very interested in where this story is going and I am eager to find out what is going to happen next. I look forward to starting the next book.

OMG I just finished this book and I LOVED it!!! It is well written and erotic!

The characters are awesome, our heroine Charlie has not had it easy at all and hearing this voice in her head is driving her mad!! I have to say that I am already falling in love with Erik, James is a complete babe and Pete is lush ( not sure if he will be in the next book but I liked him)

The FMMF scene blew my mind with how erotic it was, the sex scenes are very tastefully done and voluntarily are highly erotic, I love the mix of excitement, back story, sex, romance and the unknown in this story mixed with twists and turns

I highly recommend this awesome book and I am seriously in need of book 2

I enjoyed this book immensely. In the beginning I was not sure I would like Charlie, but as it progressed I realized that her drinking and promiscuity was her way of coping with what happened. She had to deal with her own personal hell before she could clearly consider what happened to her team. I like James and her together, but I also like the way Erik was willing to try to make her life easier. The ending was really just the beginning of a whole new look at what her life is now. I absolutely can't wait to continue on the journey with Charlie as she figures out her new life.

I'd give this one 3.5 stars

Charlie lives in hiding after getting nipped. She used to be a badass cop but that’s gone the way of last night’s Taco Bell. Or random chinese takeout. Gross! And so is she, sometimes. Not showering for 5 days at a time is just plain nasty, and not the kind that makes me happy. But she is damned determined to be depressed about how her life has changed since getting bitten.

HOWEVER she pulls out of her funk a couple of times...

My overall opinion is I enjoyed it greatly! The story was interesting and I liked how you already jumped into the story with the issue and told what happened in bits and pieces as you read along. Gave it a different feel for the read instead of the usual. The main character is struggling with herself and I like that you see her internal struggle with who she is after what happened. The sex scenes were quite hot and though any f/f action isn't usually my cup of tea it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. 🙂 Anyway, I shall definitely be continuing the series.

So, I loved the story, but I was honestly annoyed with all the sex scenes. I was really into the plot and wanting to know what was going to happen next, but this chick and her apparent sexual needs were getting on my last nerve. I was torn though. I was rooting for her and the shifter but towards the end I was also leaning on the vampire as well. That ending though..wow. I liked this, but also feel it could have been better. If only there was more of the story and a little less sex, than it would have been a little more enjoyable for me. Still good though.

That's it?

A barely interesting narrative of an alcoholic ex-cop screwing her way through the shifter community in London to spite a vampire who bit her and is now psychically linked to her mind - but nobody can explain why. Characters are flat and uninteresting, sex scenes are clumsily worded, and the author really needs an editor to clean up errors and repetitive phrasing. From other reviews, the anticlimactic ending is supposed to be a cliffhanger... more of a headscratcher. I'll pass on the rest of the series.

Received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. On the plus side the sex scenes are seriously hot. I mean, it will get your heart pumping and your thighs squirming. They were written with such fantastic detail that you could feel every delicious moment. On the negative side I felt the story was lacking. The concept was great but there was no traction with any sort of outcome. No progress, no glimpse to a possible solution, no connection. The characters, other than the MC, were all on the periphery and felt a bit disconnected You . I had high hopes that fell a bit flat with this.

Needs editing

This book needs to be edited for it to even begin to be a pleasurable read. Names aren’t capitalized, someone forgot to hit shift when trying to type a question mark and got a slash instead and sentenced are repeated within a few lines of each other - just a few of the issues.

I thought the basic plot was interesting but I definitely can’t forgive the lack of editing. Maybe with some polish this would be a good read but until then sentences repeated within a few lines with each other is a no go (now just imagine that several times - it’s annoying).

Wow

First, I was just unsure about this paranormal erotica. It seemed like an interesting concept, but the follow-thru could have been just awful. Turns out, I'm glad I read it. This is an erotica, so a lot of the pages are descriptive sex scenes, but between the sheets there is a mystery and a storyline that is captivating. I'm going to read the next in the series immediately, even though my TBR is a mile long. Meh, I read what I want and I want to read book 2.

Boooooring. I stopped reading after the second hook up 'she needed' for reasons unknown. If I wanted to read erotica with menage scenes I would have picked a book about it. So after she went to have sex with one man/shifter not bothering to even ask about his name and him taking her to another couple m and f, and after they happily proceeded to have hungry sex I was just fed up with the whole idea of the book.
Read at your own risk.

Not much here

There wasn't much going on in this book except sex. Lots of sex. Nothing else really happened and I really really don't like the heroine. If you like your books heavy on sex scenes (with m/f/f/m) and aren't worried about a plot, world building, character insight or anything making much sense, then this might just be the book for you. I feel like I wasted my money.

So this girl travels to London specifically to take out a group of vampires. She gets bitten, her team disappears, she goes into hiding. Then she meets a werewolf, the vampire finds her, and she has lots of sex.

I think the author could have left out the random foursome and instead explained why are vampire hunter met a master vampire and basically said the only thing she knows about vampires comes from movies...I feel like that just made no sense. And this just wasn't for me.

Charlie Rose’s life is changed, after a failed mission on the leader of a vampire coven (that she’s been working on for 3 years), and a vampire bite that’s marked her.
Charlie’s unable to return to her old life as a paranormal investigative officer in Chicago. Now in hiding after that event, and stuck in London, she can’t venture too far from the vampire who has marked her - whoever that may be.

With shifters, vampires and sex, paranormal romance lovers will enjoy this book.

Interesting story

First of all I didn't know that this is a cliffhanger! I don't like them at all. With that said I did like the storyline and the characters. There was something's I thought should have been addressed but I guess it's carried over into the next book. I thought James was amazing but I didn't find more about him like I wanted. And poor Erik I really didn't get all of his thing either. And Charlie is stuck in middle.
