Dragon's Gift: The Protector #1-5

Dragon's Gift: The Protector #1-5

Rate this book
In the city of Magic's Bend, I protect what's mine. No matter what.

To the world, I'm a just a Conjurer. To my closest friends, I'm a FireSoul--a dangerous Magica with forbidden powers and a dragon's soul. The downside? If anyone discovers what I am, I'm dead. So I lay low, kicking butt with my weapons, not my magic.

Things get ugly when I witness the murder of a powerful vampire ally and become the key suspect. Soon, I'm hunted by the sexiest, strongest supernatural I've ever met. Ares is an unheard of vampire hybrid, and it's hard to say if he wants to kiss me or kill me.

I've got three days to catch the real killer. The bad news? It will take my forbidden magic to succeed. But can I control it, much less keep my secret with Ares watching my every move? Especially when the stakes get ever higher?

I'm used to protecting others...now I have to protect myself.

This is just the start of Pheonix Knight's adventures. This omnibus contains all five books in the Dragon's Gift: The Protector Series.

The Protector Series is the third and final series of Hall’s larger Dragon’s Gift series focused on the three Soul Fires: Cass, Del and Nix. In Cass’s series “The Huntress” we learn that the three young women form “The Triumvirate” the coming of which to save the world has been foretold for thousands of years. Cass is “Magic”. Del is “Death”. Nix is “Life.”
You do not need to read Cass or Del’s series to enjoy this series but as with most series it does further the reader’s enjoyment. Especially since this series contains so many of the characters found in the other series. The first series “The Huntress” in particular will help you see how the three women found themselves thrown together as young teenagers and formed a bond with one another closer than blood. All three series share common story arcs. Romantically each of the three young women find themselves forced to work with a male lead character they find extremely attractive but do not trust to prevent a cataclysmic event. Adventure wise each must overcome incredible obstacles and discover their pasts that have been hidden from them since they were fourteen year olds and woke up in the middle of a field in Ireland together.
The Protector Series focuses on Phoenix “Nix” Knight. Together with her sisters of the heart Cass and Dell Nix runs the magic shop Ancient Magic in Magic Bend Oregon (the largest city made up of Magica citizens) where they sell replicas of ancient treasures imbued with ancient magic. Nix runs the shop while Cass and Del travel the world recovering the ancient artifacts to be copied to place the decaying magic in and then returned to their sacred resting spots. Although Nix often takes on several demon robbers many times her size to protect their store’s merchandise she considers herself a sidekick to the more adventurous Cass and Del. In this story Nix must shed her sidekick mentality as she learns she is ordained to be the world’s savior against a great evil.
"Too" is perhaps the best term I’d use to describe this series. Too many trials for Nix to pass to prove her worthiness to lead this quest to too many different groups. Too often after successfully completing these challenges does Nix still question her own worthiness to be the hope of the world. Too many times does Nix with the help of her eventual mate the half-vampire Ares have to perform death defying feats of bravery. Too often is she struck or bitten by those attempting to prevent her from completing her goal. To me it felt like she’d face some incredible task that nearly killed her each morning, have lunch and then face another before dinner and maybe another again before bedtime. After awhile it all felt repetitive and exhausting. I understand the author wanting to portray Nix’s bravery and resourcefulness and relentless determination but it all felt like a little too much. I understand she wanted to show that heroes are not those who lack self-doubt or fear but those who overcome them to perform heroic acts. But she really beat it to death in this story.
As the final book in the three women’s series I did enjoy how the author ended it with a perfectly fine but in one way imperfect happily ever after. I enjoyed seeing all the characters I’d come to know in the earlier series taking an active role in helping Nix perform her task.

Fugitive of Magic - I loved the beginning of Pheonix's Adventures. It kinda sucks that Ares is after her then again it might get even more fun to have him after her. I really enjoyed this new version of Earth. I love Nix's attitude and how her mind seems to work. It's a bit ADD mixed with a female who knows what she wants. I loved Laurel's narration. I've actually heard her before and loved her then too.

Trial by Magic - I loved getting back into the world of Nix. It really sucks that she's got so much going on, but at least she can't say that she's bored. I'm really loving Nix and her back and forth between her and Ares. This is turning out to be a great series and I'll probably have to get the two series before this in the Dragon Gift Universe because of how awesome this series is shaping up to be. Laurel is a great narrator and her voice makes it so amazingly easy to get lost into this world.

Origin of Magic - I loved Nix and Ares in their quest to find out more about the potion for the mysterious beaker. This is another awesome addition to this series with plenty of action and sass. I'm loving following Nix and getting to go along with her to remember her past and figure out her future. This is a really awesome book with a killer cliffhanger of an ending. Ok ok not really a cliffhanger but freaking awesome ending with new info. Laurel did an amazing job and really projected the action and suspense into her voice.

Enemy of Magic - I loved how much action and excitement there was throughout this story. I loved getting more of Draken's big plan and getting to see everyone rally to Nix. This is a really great addition to the series and really makes me excited for the big showdown. Laurel did another amazing job narrating and helped make the story seem like there was no time at all that passed while I was listening.

Forged in Magic - I loved this big showdown. There was so much action and so many awesome things happened that I can't decide what I loved the most about this book. I even enjoyed the different worlds of the gods. This is an epicly awesome action packed end to a great series. Laurel did an amazing job and her voice really added to the drama of the story.

Audio review
Book 1
First book from the author. The magic in the blurb had me
Nix the female protagonist, has a firesoul magic. It is a forbidden magic that means she has to kill someone to obtain their magic. Nix hates the idea of killing someone to get their power to keep her magic. She has a better idea conjure someone up to make her manic stronger by taking the strangers magic .
Nic tries to hide her magic because if anyone is caught using it , they are put to death by the council .
There is a hybrid Vampire , Ares, after Nix , he detected her magic during a kill .
Grab the story and see did Ares catch Nix was she put to death
Book 2
The trial of Nix against Ares just keep on getting juicer. Nix has to fine a way to best Ares , showing she’s not a firesoul. She has to convince the council that she’s not a threat to the council . There are lots of twits and turns in this series. Things change between Nix and Ares
Book 3
In this story you see Nix finally meeting her parents. She had no choice but to fight them to survive.nShe had to go through a portal to escape from their world. She wonders what is happening since her dreams are always filled with her grandfather. Is her dreams telling her something
Book 4
This is a continuation of the series . Nix is saved and she has a new ally. A dragon who is always by her side . Nix also has her Hybrid vamp boyfriend Ares by her side. They are wondering why someone is after them . Drakon lost lots of his skin and he’s not happy.
This is the fourth book in the series and it’s okay
Book 5
Last of the series.
Nix and Aries are back in his realm . They are facing the council that wants to do something, the council want to open up the vamp library. Once that is finished Nix will face another challenge
Meanwhile Nix and her friends know that they will need to face Drakon and defeat him or their is serious concern to the world. The friends know that it will need to be Nix to face Drackon and defeat him. Does Nix defeat him . Does her magic come into full bloom .

Super fun series! Tons of action and adventure! Plus, the women kick some major butt! Lots of cool magic and magical powers! I listened to the audio for the boxset, and the narrator does a great job. She has a lot of voices to do, and she does them all well. I enjoyed her performance. I loved listening to all 5 books one right after the other. Totally great deal for 1 Audible credit! These 5 books are from Nix's POV. I'd recommend reading both Cass' and Del's book series before this one, so you'll have the full story. The 3 are sisters by choice; they were kidnapped together when they were teens and escaped with their memories missing. Their story starts in Cass' 5 book series, then on to Del's 5 books, so it's good to start at the beginning. There's not a lot of depth to the characters in this series, but I still like them all. This series focuses more on the adventures that the sisters have. I find all of the action very entertaining and fun. There's is some light romance, which I do like the pairing of Nix and Ares, but I would've liked a bit more. Fun conclusion to the sister's story! For Nix's last book and the conclusion, I would've loved to have more of each sister's lives. Overall, it was an awesome read! All 15 books were very entertaining! Looking forward to more books by Linsey Hall!

The protector complete series

The series is Nixs story; Cas and Del have their own stories but they all link up. I enjoyed the first book but I couldn't complete the series as it was very repetitive in some parts. Nix was a likeable character however she did get on my nerves about how wonderful she was. The chemistry between her and Ares the male lead was definately there but I didn't like how he stood by and let the vampire court do what they wanted. The story might have been better told from both POV to give Ares a chance to explain his feelings and choices. I don't like damsels and Nix definitely wasn't but Ares seem to be always fixing her up with his blood.... I only read two books of the series and although there was action, chemistry and romance, all the combination I like, I felt I couldnt read another further three books of the same thing. I don't like books that take so long to get to the end or page fillers. Triologys are far better;, this series would be much better cut down into three books instead of five; it would cut out the repetitiveness of some of the chapters. However its still a good read and one I recommend.

Got the bundle of five books as an audible. Listened to the first book, started on the second. Gave up.
Summary: a solid meh. Not enough to return the audible, as I may eventually be bored enough to finish it one day, but certainly not something I'm going to spend more time on now.
Regarding the book itself:
1. The story concept, premises and ideas are certainly up my alley, but the writing style is too simplistic, with too limited vocabulary used for my taste even in audio. Said - said - said - gross - gross - gross - gets repetitive.
2. Also repetitive: too many tasks / tests for the heroine without enough time for those to actually have an impression on the situation and the characters. After the first book, I felt like in a D&D campaign with a two hours' total time limit because everybody had to catch their bus in the evening. And the next book started the same (though I admit I gave up before the MC showed up in this one).
A pity, because I really like the ideas in this (except for that certainly helped with the let's-everything-be-overrushed feeling in the first book).

Audiobook review: Dragon’s Gift 5 book series is entertaining, action packed, & contains light (PG) romance as the stories journey through this world. The storyline contains some artifacts history, which I absolutely love, and bits of mythology. The characters are likable and believable. The narrator did a nice job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Loved It

I like having all the books combined since I read so quickly. I’ve enjoyed this entire series with all of the girls & bought the books after reading them on KU.

Great characters, plots, & overall theme. I hope we see them in Bree & Ana’s series. I’d love to see them get married & see what powers their children inherit-that would make an interesting book or series.

Anything Linsey writes I’ll read & beg to be a beta reader, she’s that good.

Start with Cass’s story & go from there, you won’t regret it!

Finding, learning and embracing her power and destiny...

Nix is the last Firesoul of the Triumvirate to get her powers and task. She meets the Enforcer, Ares, from the Vampire Realm who becomes her protector. Now she is on a quest with sister Triumvirate to find answers regarding dragons and destiny in saving the world.

Great series, very enjoyable and full of adventure with young people choosing to do what is right.

The protector series was awesome

Really enjoyed reading how Nix meet all her challenges
Love that the love interests are there and supportive, however, the women remain true to themselves and the families before the men
Hard in life, yet men and women need to support each other in allowing each other to be who they are!
Loved the books downloading more now!

Fantastic

This was one more exciting box set describing Nix an Ares's story. I loved the way fate brought these two together in a very odd way which is Ares accusing Nix for a murder she didn't commit. I loved these two together and how Nix completed her task of finishing drakkon.

New

I have never read one of this authors books before and I am impressed. I didn't realize there were multiple sets in this series, though it was a good read by itself. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the books related to this series. Over all it was a really good book.

I have read her books over and over, they and the characters feel like friends. There are so many lessons to learn from these stories, wonderfully taught with great characters, lots of fun and love, with heroines and heroes to cheer. I can't wait to keep reading the stories of the other characters. In fact, I'm going to start now!

Loved the whole series. This is really the last part of the epic story of 3 women who chose to be sisters. Think female Indiana Jones with magic. Really need to start with the Huntress series, Cass’s story.
