Jilted Brides #3

Jilted By a Rogue

Rate this book
CHERYL HOLT delivers the delightful, emotional, and stunning conclusion to her Jilted Brides trilogy…

Amelia Boyle has always viewed herself as an extremely modest and moral woman. But after suffering a string of personal catastrophes, she went a bit wild and made several reckless decisions. Her spurt of excess culminated in her becoming engaged to a man she barely knew. When he promptly jilted her at the altar, the cruel act yanked her to her senses. She's been forced to admit she has frivolous tendencies, and she vows to never let them flare again.

James Hastings loves his life in the army, and he doesn't plan to ever retire. He's a confirmed bachelor who spends his days around active, tough men who are proud to serve King and country. He's not interested in marriage or settling down, and he has no time for women and no patience for flirtation.

But when Amelia stumbles into his dull, boring world, she turns it upside down, and it gradually dawns on him that he might not be able to live without her. Amelia has sworn off romance though and has other plans that don't include binding herself to a handsome, dashing soldier. Can James convince her that he might be precisely who and what she needs to be happy?

Regency in Gibraltar, & in England. A disappointment.

Liked the bantering, especially at the start. This contained
2 love stories.

James served the Army x 16 yrs (partly training horses).
Amelia was the sister & dtr of Royal Navy men. Amelia
accompanied the hero's half-sister Brinley to Gibraltar,
where James was stationed, ditto for Amelia's bro Evan,
who spent most time @sea. H fell for Amelia but told
her the Army/his horses would always be his #1 priority.
He experienced constant pain (kept hidden from others)
: wounds sustained @ Waterloo.

Brinley, a super materialistic thief and swindler, showed
no conscience. The love story took a 'back seat' to her.
Why ? Also realistically: would the H give up dalliances
to devote himself to the h?

I really hate to see a series you have enjoyed come to an end. The characters in all three of the books were so well developed that it was easy to relate to and enjoy reading their stories. Each of the books in this series can be read out of order and stand on their own but it makes it easier to follow and enjoy if read together in order. It makes answering questions much easier.

Amelia needs to escape London where she was jilted at the altar. The faster the better before people start talking. So she takes a job as a travel companion. Amelia is getting ready to head to Gibraltar. Amelia was strong in most instances other than running away because she was rather afraid to deal with the fallout of being jilted. She soon was rescued by an unlikely gentleman. The brother of the lady she was a companion for. He wanted nothing to do with any of it at first. But Amelia tended to win him over.

The sparks flew slowly at first which was the same with the other books; I liked how refreshing this was. A nice slow pace made for a more enjoyable read. When Amelia first saw Lord Denby he was riding a horse practically naked. This was by the way was rather sexy and just a bit on the hot side. Sexy as he was he was also very rude and conceited. As much as I wanted to not like Lord Denby or James Hasting I found that I liked him a little too much because he came to Amelia’s rescue and fell for her.

Overall the characters and vivid descriptions made this an entertaining story. I enjoyed it when some characters from the other stories would show up or be mentioned. It was like one big family.

Ms. Holt gave us a great series. Any lover of a good Historical Romance with simply enjoys all three in the Jilted Brides series. Ms. Holt gave us great storylines and characters very easy to like.

My review ....

Amelia is planning a trip to Gibraltar, well planning isn’t exactly the word.
Amelia fell for a smooth talking con man ....
And now she needs to get away, and answering a call to become a ladies travel companion seems like an ideal opportunity to escape London and all the gossip her downfall will bring.

We meet Amelia in book one (jilted by a cad) and I had hoped she would get a book.

Her rescuer comes in the form of James Hastings (lord Denby)
He’s a sailor and the brother to the lady she travelled with.
But a rescuer isn’t how she first sees him, he’s half naked and riding on the back of a horse.

He is so rude, and vain, and conceited, he flirts like mad with Amelia, but soon stops when he finds out Amelia travelled with his sister (she told Amelia that James had written to her and told he she was to come to Gibraltar, when in fact, he hadn’t had spoken to his sister in years) so storming to their hotel, he is absolutely fuming.

James doesn’t want to be Lord Denby, he told his family that he didn’t want the title. But as his brother passed away, the title is rightfully his. And his sister told him that he had to come home and look after her. He likes his life in Gibraltar and has no inclination to go home.

The banter and bickering was very much in the same vein as the other two books.
And all the books connect (there is a man that cons all the women out of money and innocence)

They were fun and very light hearted. The romance felt a little stilted.
So if you like your historical romance, then give these books a go.

They don’t really need to be read in order, but I did and felt they read better.

One Stubborn Rogue

Captain James Hastings was one stubborn rogue and I began to wonder if he would ever give in and admit to loving Amelia. As with the heroes in the first two books, he didn't hesitate to seduce Amelia and like the other books, it disturbed me that none of these men thought about the consequences to the women in a day and age where women were shunned for letting men take liberties. It seemed rather heartless on the part of all three of those heroes. However, James finally admitted his love and did right by Amelia as did the two gentlemen in the first two books. This also concluded the story of Holden Cartwright, the jilt referred to in all their stories. This was a wonderful story and I enjoyed watching the stubborn James finally succumb to love.

This review is the same for all 3 books in this series. I hated all the books for the same reasons. The hero in all three books passively rapes the heroine. She tells him no over and over but he always knows what she wants better than she does herself so he just ignores her telling him no and does as he pleases because he knows she will “enjoy it”. But the narrative never really says she enjoys the initial encounters but he certainly does. The heroine is so strong and determined to resist but after the deflowering doesn’t seem to mind continuing the affair. In this last book the hero tells her that the army is more important than she is. Then when he is forced out and has no other option but marriage he still tells her if he had not been forced out that he would not marry her that the he loved his previous life more she still marries him. What??? Where is the happy ever after there?

What a series of 3 books! Almost all the ends are tied off in this final instalment. When I read about Evan, I nearly cried real tears. I loved him so much as a character, he could not just die! I like the way all the characters reunite in this book and their greatest nemesis is vanquished. Brilliant.

Interesting

A very good book, I like all of Cheryl Holt's books. I like how all of her books roll together with the characters, if you fall in love with the characters in the first book you can at least keep up with them through on the series. Since the half sister just walked out of the convent and that strong was left danling does that leave it open for another book ?

Series

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. They can be stand alones but are richer with reading all three. I like the building of friendships and families. I love to see justice prevail. Highly recommend.
