Loved it!! Shelby Alexander can be a really nice guy, flirting with the ladies and joking with friends, but when he catches a hint of someone being done wrong...Watch Out!! He has different relationships with all the 'letter' agencies, and most police organizations, and when he is involved they keep their eyes open! And they need to...because he knows what he is doing!! The Governor of Michigan calls out of the blue, asking to meet with Shelby to discuss a special project. He sounds a little paranoid, and has Shelby wondering what's going on..Fast-paced, quick-witted with action from the opening of the book until the end..And who turns up, also hired by the Governor?! A fun story I could not put down, started reading and didn't stop until the very End!! A 5 STAR story that will take your mind off everything else going on for a time, and you will enjoy the action and answers you find!!
In today’s world this is a scary thriller. I was stunned by some of the events. Each turn of a page is beyond predictable which makes Serenity Betrayed an intense page turner.
Serenity is a quiet town Shelby Alexander retired to after his boxing career. Shelby fell into the job of fixer which he can’t get away from. His best friend Jerry MacIntyre or Mack is a retired Detroit cop. Shelby and Mack make a great team.
Shelby is called by the mayor to supplement his security team. Mayor Richards thinks something is going on and doesn’t trust his normal security. Upon arriving at the mayors, Shelby is surprised to see Mack has also been hired.
Shelby and Mack wind up in quite an awkward as well as bad situation while providing this added security. Shelby knows something is wrong, Strangely wrong. Who to trust is the question.
Shelby and Mack are so good at what they do they uncover a horrible plot that will cost them their lives. The people behind it all will never allow the truth to get out. They must die.
Shelby and Mack were budding heads with the FBI earlier in the case. According to the FBI “Richards could have been a bit more discerning when he selected his security detail.” Referring to Shelby and Mack of course. This does not help in cultivating a team effort.
This can be read as a stand alone book. Shelby Alexander has evolved through these 6 books and is one of my favorite characters. The characters are mysterious iwith the exception of Shelby and Mack. This is a fast easy read. Excitement and anxiety flows throughout. Now I’m waiting for #7.
Shelby does it again! Serenity Betrayed is Craig A. Hart's 6th Shelby Alexander Thriller. I was given a copy of the book and am posting an honest review.
Shelby, as always, is such a charmer with the ladies. But he's a tough adversary for the bad guys. Even the FBI have to stand up and take notice when he's involved. He's called in by the Governor of Michigan because of threats received. The action ramps up fast and furiously. Shelby's ex Detroit cop buddy is also called in and the wisecracks start to fly - along with the bullets!
Rather like the curate's egg, this is good in parts. The story line is run-of-the-mill and the settings are nothing to write home about. Fortunately, Shelby and Mack save the day with a macho display. Perfect, if you like the genre but lacking a little if you like to think about what you're reading.
Politicians can seldom be taken at face value. Like stage magicians there is a diversion to grab your attention so you don’t notice all the other background activity they are up to.. A nice plot and good characters as always from this author.
Another exciting page turner. Love the characters. They are talented at their craft, but never take themselves too seriously. Recommend this series to anyone.
“Short but intense” is the best way to describe Hart’s newest book: Serenity Betrayed. The plot felt very relevant in today’s political climate, and the book is a nice stand-alone story that compliments the series. If you like the other Serenity book, you’ll definitely enjoy this one as well!
Serenity Betrayed #6 - The writing style reminded me quite a bit of the Assignment series that Mr. Hart wrote with another author. It didn't have the same feel as the other Serenity books. Fast paced with a heck of a twist but actually current issues for the day. It is a quickly read story with a makes sense plot. Shelby and Mack were together, but their dialog didn't ring true for them; there was too much wisecracking at the wrong times. The characters, bad and good, ran the gamut from psycho to decent. Of course, Shel and Mack were themselves and always a good pair of characters, in many ways. I contacted the author to review his books. 4*
Serenity series: Serenity #1 - A great read. A well written, action packed suspense story that draws you in and doesn't let go until you've finished the book. The characters range from likable to despicable, all believable and make you respond to them. 5*
Serenity Stalked #2 - Fast paced but a cliffhanger. A well written suspense, darker than Serenity, heavy with vulgar language. The plot and characters keep you reading until the end. Rather short in length and a cliffhanger ending, although this subject of this story is complete. In the Serenity series, the author has some real doozies for villains for the main characters to fight. 5*
Serenity Avenged #3 - Dark but complete. A well written, but dark, suspense that grabs you and doesn't let go. Surprisingly light with the vulgar language, Serenity Stalked had too much, but contained the darkness found in the short stories of The Girl Who Read Hemingway. If you like one of these books, you'll like the other. The darkness was not graphic. Although picks up where S. Stalked ended, this novel has closure. 5*
Serenity Submerged #4 - Fast paced story. Another well written, action packed suspense story that keeps you reading until the story ends, which was all too soon. The characters are believable and real, and the twisting plot is riveting. I haven't been disappointed with any of the author's books that I've read so far. 5*
Serenity Engulfed #5 – Another dynamic addition to the Serenity Family. Another well written, fast paced, suspense filled novel with our favorite characters Shelby and Mack and some not so favorite; but without them there’s no intriguing book to read. There’s a new sheriff in town and she and Shelby are learning to play nice together, with Mack’s help. The ending makes me wonder what kind of trouble Shel and Mack will face in the future. I contacted the author to review his books and have enjoyed them all. 5*
I contacted the author to review his books after reading the first two books of the Serenity Series. Serenity series: End.
Key West series: Night at Key West - While not in the same ballpark as the Shelby series and lots better than the Assignment series, this is a good start to a new series. Set in 1937 and using real background material, Mr. Hart weaves a substantially interesting and partly humorous story. All the characters are interesting, quirky in some cases, but all hold the reader's interest, along with their realistic dialog. The story lines are entertaining and well thought out; yes, there are a few kinks, but the story moves along at a good pace. Key West has always been interesting during this time period and Mr. Hart keeps that interest going with this story. 5*
Iowa author Craig A. Hart is both a writer and an editor: he has served as editor-in-chief for The Rusty Nail literary magazine, as manager for Sweatshoppe Media, and director of Northern Illinois Radio Information Service, an outreach that brought daily news and information to the visually impaired. His works have been published in The Orange Room Review, Voices, The Stray Branch, Red Poppy Review, The Mindful Word, Inclement, Right Hand Pointing, 7x20 Magazine, among others. In addition to writing fiction Craig has published self help manuals on writing and critiques of other writers’ works. SERENITY was the initial installment in a series he calls The Shelby Alexander Thriller series. – SERENIITY BETRAYED is a very fine fifth installment in a series that grows in importance.
Craig has a fine grasp on character development, and when he launched a series based on a main character (Shelby Alexander) he realizes it is even more important that we get to know him quickly and watch his development grow so that the series can maintain our interest and secure our addiction Craig supplied that in the first installment, and in this book he sets in motion the grisly deed that is the focus of the novel – threats to governing bodies.
The plot as, as usual, well summarized by Craig: ‘After the Governor of Michigan begins receiving threats from a militant environmental group, he calls in extra security. The problem? He fears there might be a traitor on his security detail. The solution? Call in an independent contractor. The man for the job? An ex-boxer and semi-retired fixer named Shelby Alexander. But who can be trusted? As it turns out ... no one. Along with his best buddy and right hand man Jerry "Mack" MacIntyre, Shelby steps in to protect the governor of his beloved state. It doesn't take long for the fireworks to start and the betrayals to run thick and heavy.
All the ingredients are there, but it is the chef’s hand at mixing them that makes this novel so successful. This is a bite out of Middle America, bursting with flavor and atmosphere. The book is relative short – making for a fine evening’s read. Highly Recommended.
Chunky, was trying to keep up with Wolverine (One True North environmental leader). Everyone knew while playing cards you would be picking yourself up off the floor if you tried to out-drink him. What else were they discussing?
Mr. Shelby Alexander caught the Star Line ferry (St. Ignace). Mackinac Island, MI. Mighty Mac Hamburgers. Shelby (divorced) met Governor Richards (MI), & Lieutenant Governor Milburn (MI). Shelby read the letter addressed to Governor Richards. It was from the One True North environmental group. Grand Hotel. Shelby, Jerry “Mack” McIntyre (Governor security, former Detroit PD Detective), & William Bates had checked the men’s bathroom. It was locked/unlocked, & Governor Richards was gone. FBI SA Carmichael had been assigned to the MP case.
What were Wolverine, & Governor Richards discussing? Arish (migrant worker) had escaped & was heading into the trees. What was Governor Richards up to?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

When Gov Richards from Mackinac Island in Detroit, requests Shelby Alexander to help with his security, Alexander didn’t think twice. Apparently, Gov Richards claimed that he and his family had been threatened by a company, One True North. Apparently Gov Richards is going ahead with a regional environmental summit, which would cause issues with the logging camps. Gov Richards feels that someone within his political camp is giving information to One True North about his whereabouts. He wants Alexander to help with security for him. Alexander’s old time friend, Mack, happens to be another person that Gov Richards has hired as well for additional security. Why did the Gov hire these two additional security personnel? Both Alexander and Mack are on security detail for a little dinner party. The dinner party doesn’t turn out as planned. The Gov goes missing. What happened to him? Who is responsible? Did Alexander and Mack fall short in their security detail? Will they find the Gov? There is definitely action in this book. I felt that there could’ve been more detail in the beginning of book. This would’ve been the set up for the actual plot in the book. This book did show that there is always the possibility of corruption in any official office.
This is a relatively short book but packed full of action and intrigue. The governor of Michigan hires Shelby as additional security before a meeting on Mackinac Island. During the events that follow it becomes impossible to determine the good guys. As events draw to an end, action and violence rock the story. The characters are not too deep, but provide color and interest to the plot. Shelby's interaction with his friend Mack is worth the price of the book for their humorous banterThis is a relatively short book but packed full of action and intrigue. Serenity Betrayed is a fast paced, funny story that intrigues and entertains the reader. The setting is surreal, and the author uses it as a means to create a set of lively and unusual personas. Shelby Alexander is at his best. Smart, experienced and disillusioned, he portrays a captivating, three dimensional character. Adding to this is the witty and lively bater between him and his friend Mack, which is hilarious. A few of the side characters, such as the young FBI agent Carmichael or the old Mr. Franklin, are also certainly worthy of a mention. The plot flows easily, keeping a steady rhythm with a few remarkable cameo episodes. Violence, sometimes crude, is an essential part of the story. The author, however, carefully avoids excesses. Overall, Serenity Betrayed is an entertaining book that leaves the reader satisfied of the time spent on it. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Opinions and comments are solely my own.
The Governor of Michigan hires both Shelby and Mack as security for a summit happening at the mansion on Mackinac Island. Because Richards received threats on his life from a group called One True North to protest the summit he wanted some more experienced security on hand along with his own. The governor stood and excused himself to the restroom. Shelby walked with him but stayed outside the bathroom to give the governor some modicum of privacy. Several minutes passed and Shelby was uncomfortable that Richards was taking a long time in the bathroom so he knocked on the door to make sure everything was ok. There was no answer so he tried the door. It was locked! He motioned Mack to join him and asked him if he could pick the lock. The half bath was empty the window above the sink was wide open. The search began to look for the governor. This story was well crafted and no errors in grammar or spelling. I rated it a five as it kept my interest and I love a good mystery.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 'Serenity' series, they are very good thrillers with original plots and some great characters, unsurprisingly the central character, Shelby Alexander, is the best written, but the other characters, especially Shelby's friends, are all believable, three dimensional characters. The story line in this book is a little far-fetched, but still very exciting and with lots of twists and turns. The dialogue is excellent, especially the banter between Shelby and his friend 'Mack', which is hilarious and completely in character. The action scenes are very well written, yes there is violence, but it isn't excessive and is appropriate for the story. If I do have one complaint, its that it is rather short and I finished it far too quickly. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author (Thanks!) but this review is voluntarily written.
This sixth book in the series is a fast-moving incident taking place over a (very) few days - no more than three, I think. I was initially thrown by the opener - I seem to have not yet read the previous book - but that was no real problem as Shelby is once again not in Serenity. He is summoned by the governor of Michigan to bolster his security while on Mackinac Island - and things go downhill from there...
The 'old team' of Shelby and Mack soon realise that all is not as it seems - and what we have here is a real page-turner with the author cranking up the suspense right until the end (even if we are probably fairly sure Shelby will survive it looks at one point that things are really stacked against him).
In this thriller by Craig A. Hart, Shelby, the series hero takes a job providing security for the Michigan governor. When he disappears within hours of Shelby's starting his job, Shelby and Mack are on the job, trying to piece together what happened to him. Even if you're not a fan of the series, this book stands well on it's own. Shelby and Mack are ex-cops with an attitude who get things done, even if it's not necessarily by the book. They are opposed by a couple of very nasty villains you'll love to hate and occasionally aided by a couple of by the book and somewhat bumbling F.B.I. agents. I loved the action, the Mackinaw Island setting and the clever banter between Shelby and Mack. This one's definitely worth giving it a read.
This is the sixth book in this series and they should be read in order. Shelby and Mack have been hired by the Governor to be outside security. He has been getting threats and wants extra help. But nothing is as it seems when the Governor goes missing while they are on their watch. Mack and Shelby have their doubts about what really happened when it appears that they governor might have gone willingly. Will they be able to figure out what happened before its too late? Could the governor be in on it? I really enjoyed this book. Shelby is one of my all-time favorite characters. When he and Mack get together you never know what is going to happen. Trouble is never far from Shelby. I can’t say enough about this book or the series. I highly recommend it.
Shelby Alexander wants to be a small town, regular guy. However, he keeps getting drawn into strange, insidious situations. And his friend Mack seems to get drawn into Shelby's adventures even by accident. But how much trouble could this duo get into when all they have to do is protect the Governor of Michigan. I love the banter and interaction between Shelby and Mack because it is such a "guy thing" to do. It helps ease the tension of the story, which is pretty non-stop. The Shelby Alexander thrillers are quick fun reads that will keep you entertained on these snowy nights.
I received an ARC of this book from the author, but I posted this review because I LOVE THIS SERIES!!
I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
In the sixth adventure of Shelby Alexander he finds himself involved in a complicated plan of betrayal, terrorism and smuggling. Along with Shelby’s friend Mack the two men try to determine how threats against the Governor’s life, and his seemingly voluntary disappearance are connected. Their investigation leads them to an isolated area where death becomes very possible, just not the Governor’s death.
Somehow Shelby finds a way to make the connections, survive attempted murder, and get rid of some of the most despicable bad guys he’s ever faced.
Craig Hart takes the reader to northern Michigan in Serenity Betrayed. Having lived in Michigan most of my life, Mackinac Island is a place that I have often visited. I could picture the bike trip around the island and the scenes that took place there and in the Upper Peninsula. Hart’s characters, Shelby Alexander and Mack McIntyre, form an effective team for dealing with mystery and suspense. Their banter adds to the entertainment value of the story. I found myself caught up in the plot and eager to discover how the crisis would be resolved. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I really like the Serenity series. In this one, Shelby gets a call or of the blue. He needs to get to the governor's summer mansion on Macinac Island. There he finds out the governoe watns to hore him and one other man as extra security. The other man ends up being Shelby's old friend Mack. At a dinner held at the mansion, the governor disappears from the restroom with no signs or sounds of trouble. Shelby and Mack are going to investigate even when the FBI isn't crazy about it. The plot is really good with surprising twists. I was drawn right in and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm definitely looking forward to more of this series.
Yet again Craig delivers a brilliant un put down-able read. After taking on what appears to be an easy job Shelby & Mac find themselves pulled into a whole heap of trouble. The back & forth banter between Shelby & Mac makes an entertaining read with some LOL moments. The main story has you gripped & has some thought provoking moments. Plenty of action & as always the good guys win in their own special way. You'll defiantly want to read the other books in the series if this is the 1st you've read.
When the Governor of Michigan calls Shelby to be added to his security team how can he say no? Joined by his good friend and ex cop Mack you know you are in for an adventure! When the Governor disappears and they find he was not kidnapped despite what the FBI thinks Shelby and Mack follow their own leads and hunches. This book certainly had twists and turns you would never expect! I love the action and gun fights! It was definitely an original story! I love these crazy dramas! I’m now hooked on the series and I highly recommend this book and this series!
I jumped into this series on the last but it was easy to catch up to where the characters were explained and who they were. It was refreshing to see books written with a lot more detail rather than just saying " he leaned over to talk to" instead he inserted the noises the chair made and the action and sounds you would hear and notice if yo were right there. A very enjoyable book. Although I wish for a longer book but that's just me. I like the character of Shelby Alexander. I'm going to go find the other books and read them
Another terrific story by author, Craig A. Hart. Reader meets one of Shelby friends Mack.who make this story fascinating. The higher Richards is introduced and the story takes off.leaving the reader spellbound. Until.Shelby.realized things are not what they seem and he and Mack.do their thing.which almost gets them.killed but.Shelby.is able to bring the criminals to justice. This book is great as a reader unable to.put down. Will do time following this author.
The governor is missing. Has he been kidnapped? The first book I've read by this author. And I'm off to a roaring start. Altho unconventional and somewhat laid back the protagonist is cut from the cloth of heroes and tends to think a bit out of the box. This is a short read in which the villains have hit upon a particularly vile way of oppressing those weaker than themselves. Recommended. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Well I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this Shelby adventure! The story line is very current. I like the way Shelby looks out for the underdog. There are lots of twists and turns and surprises in this great adventure. The only thing I would change is, I would have liked more - A longer story. Now I have to wait for the next adventure to be published.
‘Serenity Betrayed’ by Craig A Hart is a great goodreads. Shelby has best friend, Mack, join him as added security for the governor. Mr. Hart throws in an unexpected twist as soon as Shelby and Mack begin their security watch. The action begins and continues rill the end leaving Shelby and Mack in a deadly situation. This book is well worth your time to read it and the series is a must read for its creative writing of intriguing storylines and characters readers love.
