This book collects together Inalcik’s pioneering works dealing with early Ottoman history, focusing on the role of sultan, society and economy and drawing on Ottoman archival materials. The book first explores historiographical issues by examining prevailing views on the periodization of Ottoman history as well as the life and work of ‘Ashi? Pashazade. On the subject of sultans and their policies, it scrutinizes Osman’s appearance as a charismatic leader in the Bithynia frontier region after the battle of Bapheus (Koyun-Hisar), as well as the decision-making process in Ottoman government. The book also examines the Islamization of Ottoman state laws under Suleyman the Lawgiver and the position of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch under the Ottomans. The Ottoman Empire significantly traces the Islamization of the Turks in general, and the history of Islam in Asia Minor in particular; the rebuilding of the conquered city of Constantinople; the transformation of a Genoese city, Galata, into an Ottoman one; the important roles the Greek subjects of the Sultan played in the economy and finances of the empire; and how and exactly when the Ottomans established complete control of the Straits and traffic in the Black Sea.

About the author

He was born in Istanbul to a Crimean Tatar family, which left Crimea for Constantinople in 1905. His birthday is unknown but İnalcık chose 26 May 1916 for his birthday. He attended Balıkesir Teacher Training School, and then Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of History where he graduated from in 1940. He completed his PhD in 1943 in the same department. His PhD thesis was on the Bulgarian question in the late Ottoman Empire.

He entered the same school as an assistant, then he became assistant professor in 1946 and after his return from lecturing in the University of London for a while, he became a professor in the same department in 1952. He lectured in various universities in the United States as a guest professor. In 1972, he was invited by the University of Chicago. Between 1972 and 1993 he taught Ottoman history at the University of Chicago. In 1994, he returned to Turkey and founded history department at Bilkent University where he is still teaching.

In 1993, he donated his valuable collection of books, journals and off-prints on the history of Ottoman Empire to the library of Bilkent University.

He has been member president of many international foundations. He is a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Department of Historical Sciences. He is also a member of the Institute of Turkish Studies.

شكّلت الإمبراطورية العثمانية، ولا تزال، موضوعا تاريخيا يجلب الكثير من انتباه المؤرخين والسياسيين، وتشغل الدراسات العثمانية مساحة كبيرة وهامة من الدراسات الأكاديمية التاريخية في العالم. ذلك أن هذه الإمبراطورية التي امتدت على قارات العالم القديم الثلاث، واستمرت لمدة 600 سنة ونيّف تقريباً، لا تزال حاضرة اليوم من خلالها تَرْكتها الجيوسياسية، وتوزع المجموعات الإثنية والطائفية في العالم العربي وفي دول البلقان.

كانت الإمبراطورية بلا شك كيان ضخم، غير أن آلية اشتغال هذا الكيان وتحرّكه، والعناصر التي شكّلت الدولة، وكذلك اقتصادها ونظامها المالي والزراعي بل حتى تاريخ النشأة نفسه لا تزال مواضيع بالحاجة إلى البحث الجاد بعيدا عن أي انحيازات أيديولوجية، ذلك أن استغلال التاريخ العثماني اليوم في السياسة والسطحية الغير مبررة في تناول هذا التاريخ في النقاشات، أسبل صورة سلبية غير حقيقية عن تاريخ سلالة آل عثمان ومملكتهم.
في هذا السياق يأتي هذا الكتاب للدكتور التركي خليل إينالجيك، فالكتاب هو مجموعة أبحاث متنوعة كتبها المؤرخ تتناول 3 محاور رئيسية وهي الموجودة في عنوان الكتاب:
✪السلطان/السياسة : حيث يسلّط المؤرخ الضوء على الأسطورة التأسيسية للعائلة الحاكمة وهي منام عثمان بك الشهيرة التي رواها للشيخ الديبالي، والمصادر التاريخية التي تناولت هذا الموضوع، كما سلّط أيضاً الضوء على المصادر التاريخية التركية والبيزنطية لمعركة بافيوس 1302م، وهي من المعارك العسكرية التي ساهمت في تأسيس الإمارة العثمانية.
كما كتب المؤرخ الذي ناهز عمره القرن، عن كيفية صنع القرار داخل الدولة، موضحا بأن عملية صنع القرار لم تكن بالضرورة مركزية بالكامل ونابعة عن إرادة السلطان فحسب، بل كانت عملية بيروقراطية. وكتب أيضا عن الطوائف الثلاث :السيفية (الجيش)، القلمية (رجال الحكومة) والعلمية (علماء الدين وشيوخ الإسلام)، كما كتب أيضا عن وضعية أهل الذمة داخل الدولة العثمانية وكذلك عن الفساد المستشري والرشوة والمحسوبية التي انتشرت في فترة الانحطاط والتراجع.

✪الإقتصاد: حيث يعرض الدكتور مواضيع مختلفة تتناول السياسات المالية، التجارة والضرائب وهي نقطة أثارت انتباهي كثيرا، حيث غالبا ما كانت السياسات الاقتصادية العامل المحرّك للسياسة العثمانية أكثر حتى من الحميّة الدينية "للسلطان الغازي". فعلى سبيل المثال سُمي السلطان بايزيد باسم "الولي" ليس لتقواه وصلاحه بل لقرارته التي كانت مضادة لقرارات السلطان محمد الفاتح المتمثلة في بسط الدولة سيطرتها على بعض الأراضي الوقفية لصالح التكايا وزوايا الدراويش.

✪المجتمع: كما تضمن الكتاب أيضا عن المجتمعات الغير التركية، وهنا أعني الجمّالون العرب والتجار اليونانيين. كما كتب أيضا عن كيف تحولت القسطنطينية إلى مدينة إسلامية.

الكتاب منقسم إلى جزئين كبيرين: الجزء الأول متعلق بعملية التأريخ (هيستوغرافيا) أي المصادر التي تؤرخ لحدث معين في التاريخ العثماني مثل كتاب تاريخ عاشق باشا زاده. والقسم الثاني منقسم الى الأجزاء الثلاث المذكورة أعلاه (السلطان والسياسة والاقتصاد/المجتمع).

الكتاب غنيّ بالتفاصيل وممتع للمهتمين بالتاريخ العثماني، ويمكن قراءته كما يُقرأ القاموس حيث ليس بالضرورة قراءته من الغلاف إلى الغلاف بالترتيب.

This is not easy to read. Verbose. Tedious. Dry. History must not be spelled out like this. And copious pages are spent pointing out the incongruities of his contemporaries’ historical works on the same topic. Yes, I know more now than I did before about the Ottoman Empire, but it came at a cost—a cost that I would rather spend some other way.

It's a very academic work, so it's a bit difficult at times if you have little knowledge of Ottoman history.
