"S’hard to love yourself. I know that. But you can’t love someone else without loving yourself first...

description
...You can’t be there one hundred percent for another person unless you like yourself. It’s unfair to the person you love."

description

What a nice quick read to start a day! I've always been a huge fan of Sara Wolf ever since the Lovely Vicious series, and when I learned about her other upcoming standalones, I just had to have them. Of course, The Education of Alice Wells was not an exception.

The book's main character is Alice Wells, a college student who finds herself boring and normal. She finds enjoyment and fun in studying, and would rather submerge herself inside a classroom or a library instead of a party. Although she tops her classes and aces her exams, it doesn't really earn her any friends and is made fun of as a "robot".
"I’m still boring and focused on school as ever. But in a house with a Mom who only looked at me if I brought home a good report card, it was something I just grew into. School was my life. Where other girls found joy in movies and fashion and friends, I found it in numbers and facts. That’s how I’ve always been. It didn’t get me a lot of friends."

But aside from her love for studying and all things school-related, she actually has another hidden interest.
"I think of Theo – Theo, the only boy with enough courage to approach me, to speak to me like an equal instead of a disdained alien or a piece of meat. Theo, the only boy to ever smile at me, to compliment me with true sincerity."

But of course, Alice knows nothing about boys. She has had the biggest crush on Theo, but she hasn't made any single move about it.
description

This is the part where Ranik Mason comes to the picture, the king of bad boys in Mountford University. Under certain circumstances, Alice was put to a situation wherein she suddenly comes up to ask for Ranik's help to become more "attractive" to start catching the attention of Theo. She worries that her "robot" looks will get her nowhere near Theo. Ranik, being the charming and arrogant being he is, agrees to this. But in exchange, Alice needs to do his homework and help him in his schoolwork, especially since his grades have been flunking. They both shake in into this "pact" and have officially agreed to help each other.

But of course, we all know what happens in stories like this...
"I can love you better. I promise you, I can love you more than he ever would. I already do. Just gimme a chance."

description

Anyway, I'll stop spoiling the good stuff. I'm rating this book 4 stars because as much as I enjoyed this, I did have a few issues with it. First was Ranik's accent. I loved Ranik and found him really sweet, but there's just something about his accent that I can't pinpoint that's kind of bothering me. Second, I believe that the relationship between Alice and Ranik could've been written deeper, much more apart from their physical attraction. Third, I'm REAAAALLY hoping for a better cover. Lastly, I think there's still room for a better characterization build-up!

But aside from those issues, I really did enjoy this book! Can't wait for another Sara Wolf book!

I'm a picky reader.
This book had good potential. The hero and heroine were polar opposites. The heroine was in love with some guy. She needed the hero's help to seduce him and in exchange, she'll do his homework.
It all sounds nice and interesting and funny.
Well, it was. Until the goddamn hero made me want to claw his eyes out.
I'm not really a fan of manwhores in books. I used to be. It's fine if he was a manwhore. But this guy...
He continued to whore around even after he supposedly fell in love with the heroine.
It gets better...
He admitted to the heroine that he slept with all those girls just to forget her but he couldn't. It just didn't work.
It gets even better...
Those girls didn't matter. Nope, not at all. Because It was her face he saw when he came.
What an honor. I envy her.
Wow. Just wow. I'm gonna faint because this is so romantic.
Listen, this book was good. It had its funny moments. The heroine was quirky. I liked her a lot. But I just couldn't stand the hero. His grammar made my eyes bleed. When I read, I need a well written book. If I wanted to read "she don't" or "he don't" or "ain't" every five seconds, I would go listen to some rap songs.

It was sort of silly and clichéd but I ended up loving this book.

The heroine was super annoying but nevertheless I felt for her. She was likeable despite being dumb half the time if this even makes sense.

The hero fell for her first and the sadistic part of me, hehe, enjoyed how she made the hero suffer and work for it literally the ENTIRE book. She was such a tease. On the other hand, I pitied him cause it was clear as day the poor fella got it bad for her... pitied but not too much though cause he's a ho (fucking cliché 🙄). But here his whorish ways didn't irk me that much cause the heroine wasn't pining for him and as I've said it was evident he hurt and cared about her way too much and believed she felt nothing for him and honestly it's just difficult to stay mad at him.

Anyway, despite all this being irritating, I guess it was exactly what kept my interest till the end. I liked how it was the hero who pursued her, pined for the heroine and cherished her, was super protective and supportive and suffered till the very end *evil laugh*

P. S. I found it so amusing how they conveniently used all the "tutoring thing" as an excuse to do some wicked stuff. It was hot

I liked the book. I think it ended too quickly. I would've loved to know more about people's reactions to Alice and Ranik.

It was easy to like Alice and Ranik. I loved being in both their heads. As a fan of Sara Wolf, she didn't disappoint. There is angst and passion. I would love to read more from her and also own this book in paperback,

Ok this book was totally hot and I sort of liked Ranik. Except for his grammar (which made me grimace every time) and his man-whore ways.
Alice... I didn't like her half the time... but her snarkiness and sarcasm was kinda refreshing and fun. I liked their relationship, even though she really gave him crap most of the time.
Theo was so boring and lame I wanted to hit my head against a wall. Or better, HIS head. Why hurt myself?
Grace was so annoyingly cheerful and colorful I wanted to rip my eyes off.
BUT! What really bugged me was that no one in this damn book had safe sex. I mean Ranik went with who knows how many slutty women and never used protection. AND he didn't use protection with Alice either. And I mean, other than risking really nasty diseases from those "ladies", Alice being an inexperienced virgin wasn't even on the pill... so... really?
It wasn't a bad read, BUT it had the potential to be much better.
3.5 stars.

This was just fun and adorable. It just made me happy. Its just that simple.

I will say there are some editing flaws, mostly in the second half, like it was getting rushed. But I just overlooked it.

Also, Raniks accent was strange. Sometimes I felt like he should be British or Australian, other times he was clearly a southern boy. I am from the south an "Oy" just isn't a southern thing. So I had to keep telling myself he was from Louisiana (Is that right? I think so...) in order to hear him more clearly in my head.

But so far, in my experience with Sara Wolf, I just love the characters she creates. They are witty, and smart, and funny, and sarcastic and just so hard not to love. I really enjoy them. This book was very different from her Lovely Vicious series. It was much lighter.

Overall, I really enjoyed it!!

Must admit this was disappointing. Especially after reading Lovely Vicious books. The story line was lacking originality. And the dialogue fell flat. Alice was way too ridiculously sheltered. Being a brain means you have lots of knowledge about stuff. It seemed so contradictory to make her uber smart, and yet so dense.

The Education of Alice Wells

Kinda sorta disappointed with this book.

Not saying that I didn't like it, I just expected more from it since Sara Wolf wrote it. Then again, I've only ever read her Lovely Vicious series (which is PHENOMENAL), so I assumed it would be equally hilarious as those books were. But it wasn't. Not really.

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW

Ranik reminded me a whole hell of a lot of Isis from The Lovely Vicious series. He, too, cracked jokes at every turn. He also reminded me of Jack from the series. I guess you could say that Ranik is just a mix of the two. Always trying to put a happy face on to cover his insecurities and beliefs that no one will ever love or want him.

Now, Alice. Alice, Alice, Alice. I totally loved her. She was frustrating at times, but so was Ranik, and I still love him. The robotic way she spoke and thought was actually kinda...pleasant? Idk, but I liked it. The only really frustrating thing about Alice was her insistence that she was in love with Theo when she didn't even really know him. Her reasoning for loving him every time was that he was nice to her, and was attractive, and was patient with her. Like, hello, is that not Ranik as well??? She was so blinded in her "love" with Theo that she couldn't even see the guy that was right in front of her face, the guy that was ALREADY in love with her, with the real Alice.

I was kinda nervous towards the end at the carnival (I giggled a bit at the similarities between the final throwdown at the carnival in this book and the big reveal at the carnival in Brutal Precious). After everything that went down with Alice and Ranik beforehand, she still insisted that she loved Theo, even after he said that Ranik had "soiled" her. But then Alice finally opened her big, dumb eyes and finally noticed Ranik and how much he loved her.

And then they made out against a tree and then magically appeared at Ranik's apartment and they frick fracked and it was great and then it's a month later and Ranik is driving her to SanFran to visit her dad in prison and all was well in the world of Alice Wells.

I really liked this book. The characters ale loveable and more important, I think they are believable, especially Ranik. He is very honest and likeable, I can totally imagine someone like him in real life. It's quite rare for a male character to be so surprisingly real and vulnerable and not self assured macho. Thank You Sara Wolf for such a nice male character. I liked the writing style, especially how the dialogues between Alice and Ranik were written. It is so adorable how they fit together, though, they are so different. They just click almost from the beginning. The only thing that a little bit disappointed me was the length of the book. I'd like it to be a little longer, especially in the end, it felt like it ended abruptly and I wanted so much to read more about Alice and Renik, when they finally became a couple. But anyway, I enjoyed reading this book and will recommend it to anyone who has read any of Sara Wolf's books before or would like to give it a try. You should totally read it! Well done Ms. Wolf.
