Ivy Secrets

Rate this book
Jean Stone’s dramatic, suspenseful novel weaves together the lives of three young women with a closely guarded secret that puts a teenage girl in jeopardy.

They met at a prestigious women’s college in New England; three women from different backgrounds: Charlie, the poor girl from the wrong side of town; Tess, the gifted artist seeking love and acceptance; and Marina, a European princess craving an ordinary life. They were best friends and soul mates, and together they swore to keep a shocking secret.

Now, fifteen years later, the past has come back to shatter their worlds and rekindle long forgotten dreams. Charlie’s teenage daughter has been kidnapped—but not for the ransom that her wealthy husband can pay. The truth reunites the roommates and forces them to confront the girls they were and the women they have become. Only now do they understand that true strength lies in their faith in one another and their willingness to expose the scandal, lies, and desperate acts born of sacrifice. And only the truth behind their ivy secrets can set them free.

Superficial and draggy.

I had a really hard time staying with this novel because it was so slow and boring. The characters were two dimensional and the plot ridiculous and unbelievable.

Tess, Marina, and Charlie strike up and unlikely friendship as students at the illustrious Smith College, where young women of privilege attend. While Marina and Tess fit right in, Charlie is a poor girl on a scholarship. Her hope is to catch a rich husband and live happily ever after.

Tess is the dowdy looking daughter of privilege who is odd and needy. She is the friend that sits home feeling sorry for herself and making up boyfriends to console herself.

Marina is a princess from a fictional country known as Novokia. She yearns for freedom but comes to school with a bodyguard and an attitude.

The three girls go through hardships and when tragedy strikes, the women must keep each other's secrets. These secrets follow them well into womanhood and threaten to destroy them.

This entire book was a stinker. It was cliche and implausible. The plot was draggy, boring and unrealistic and I didn't care for any of the characters. They are the ultimate frenemies. I hate books about spoiled, self-absorbed women. The characters were under-developed and the ending tied up much too neatly. Stay away from this one.

Such a good book. Twists and turns I just didn't see coming. I will check more books from this author.

Meh. The plot seemed interesting initially: three college friends carry a secret with them into adulthood, but sigh, the characters didn’t seem fully developed, nor did their friendship seem authentic. The secondary characters were just window dressing.

While it did drag in places I made myself not skip pages to make sure I didn't miss anything. I wish this was a series as I would love to see what happens to these ladies and their friends next.
