Ordet

I read this as one of five plays in one volume - haven't read the other four yet, by the Danish cleric-playwright Kaj Munk, who was murdered by the Nazis during the occupation. Ordet (The Word) is one of the great parables on the power of faith, featuring probably the most miraculous ending of all time. The play was perfect material for Carl Theodor Dreyer, exploring the prism of religion, rebellion and redemption, with an undercurrent of sexual tension, and ended up as an hypnotic and austere masterpiece of Scandinavian cinema. God, how I wish the likes of Dreyer and Bergman were around today.
