A beautifully produced biography of the 'father of modern missions'. Peace Carey s compelling pages convey the very atmosphere of that extraordinary period of missionary advance. This life of Carey is structured around a series of remarkable events, always unplanned and unexpected, which opened the way to undreamed of achievements. Carey and his colleagues overcame mountainous obstacles to become the most productive church planters and Bible translators of all time. No other work compares with this moving treatment.

An excellent biography of William Carey. Well written, detailed, with many references to original sources. If you are desiring a deep dive on Carey, this would be a great place to start.

The intimate knowledge paired with vast research and letter collection in this biography makes it the ultimate Carey biography. Pearce Carey does a good job of filling out Carey’s life with numerous excerpts of letters and journal entries while not letting the reader get lost in it all.
Carey’s life itself is truly remarkable. Not even considering his other achievements, his translation efforts are literally incomparable.
My most significant critique of the work is it’s smoothing over of controversy. I was anticipating a strong defense of Carey’s first wife but was only offered a feeble “if you knew all she went through you wouldn’t judge her”. Likewise with Marshman, such a straw man was made of his critics that I genuinely don’t even know what bothered them about him, nor any really justification of his innocence.
Regardless, an excellent biography of an astounding and inspiring life.

The book is written in the early years of the 19th century, I believe by William Carey’s grandfather. Because of, this there is a difficulty at times when reading the book. Indeed I nearly gave up reading it. I am so glad I dld not because if I had I would not have been challenged by the passion and determination these pioneer missionaries had for the proclamation of the gospel and the need to tell the message to all people.
The book does not shy away from the difficulties Carey and his fellow missionaries had with each other, which I believe makes it authentic and real.

What a humble and dedicated servant of God. It is hard not to love William Carey and his colleagues for their passion and commitment to bring God’s love and his word to the people’s of India. This is such a well written and thoroughly researched book that I did not mind the length. What impressed me more than his great feats of translation was his utter devotion to his Lord and the work he’d been given. His love for all people of every tribe, tongue and race is clearly evident in all he did. Christ shone through him and that is what made its impact on me as I read. This is one biography I would definitely recommend.

I read this biography of William Carey, a shoemaker from the Midlands, during my summer holiday this year. It was very inspirational! Despite numerous difficulties Carey persevered in his mission to "expect great things from God, [and] attempt great things for God". After roughly 40 years in India he and his associates had baptised around 600 Indians and established mission posts in virtually every area of India. All glory to God!

‘William Carey’ is the biography of the well known missionary to India, William Carey.

This is one of the best biographies that I have read. It’s written rather beautifully and covers a lot of ground. The man’s faithfulness through many varied and great difficulties is an amazing testimony and a powerful challenge. Very close to being a 5 star!
