The intimate knowledge paired with vast research and letter collection in this biography makes it the ultimate Carey biography. Pearce Carey does a good job of filling out Carey’s life with numerous excerpts of letters and journal entries while not letting the reader get lost in it all.
Carey’s life itself is truly remarkable. Not even considering his other achievements, his translation efforts are literally incomparable.
My most significant critique of the work is it’s smoothing over of controversy. I was anticipating a strong defense of Carey’s first wife but was only offered a feeble “if you knew all she went through you wouldn’t judge her”. Likewise with Marshman, such a straw man was made of his critics that I genuinely don’t even know what bothered them about him, nor any really justification of his innocence.
Regardless, an excellent biography of an astounding and inspiring life.
