This thriller has been a wonderful surprise for me from McFarlane, having read his Privateer series, his great ability to change genres and write phenomenally! A newbie ex vet in security makes his best in a different environment, a tough, incongruous, dark and thrilling world, full of intrigue, cruelty and mystery. No stop Action is served on a platter, with a very realistic view and real life protagonist. This is going to be a great series!

Henry is out of the army and looking for work. Everything he starts leads to more trouble and violence. He is also trying to protect a young girl. It all leads back to the mob. It all leads to a happy ending.

I would recommend this novel and author to readers of family and family relationships mystery novels. 2024

Better than many of the stories involving ex Rangers who turn private investigator. Biggs and his German shepherd, former military dog, team up to tackle several adventures.

Plenty of action and more than it's fair share of twists and surprises. Beginning of a series, but not a cliff hanger ending.

I don't read science fiction so I'm glad I got to read the thriller by Jamie McFarlane . Lots of action and suspense with great characters to keep readers interested . Would read the next book of the series .

A good read, even if there were so-ooo many sub-plots for poor Biggs to get caught in! Biggs is a retired Army Ranger, trying to get a job and get his feet back on the ground. He gets tires stolen off his truck and chases down the evil-doers: two young girls who are obviously in trouble. He accidentally discovers that the girls are victims of human trafficking, and he vows to save Amalia after he sees that her sister is dead. He gets involved with the mob; he gets involved with a bail jumper who's mother shoots him; he gets involved with a rich woman who is trying to get the goods on her husband (both of whom are part of the mob); the police woman who he went to high school with; the Marine Vietnam Vet; the girl who works at the gun store; and more! And of course he has his faithful trained guard dog and his nerdy high school buddy, Snert, who is a wiz with electronics. In any event, it's an action-packed story that moves along easily and held my interest. Wanted to keep reading!

When Justice Calls

I liked it. The story flowed nicely. The characters were good. My complaint was that the hero, while being a veteran who had seen action, seemed clueless at times trying to defend himself. I will try the second book in the series.

I got into this story right away and did not let other entertainment activities distract me until I finished. I am not sure what made me read it straight through but I didn't want to stop. There were a few things that bothered me like the first date restaurant scene, what the heck was that? why did it happen and for what purpose? seemed out of character. and how did the girl get away enough to be rescued? Wasn't she re-captured? how would she still have a phone he could get in touch with her with? a few minor things with continuance like the air filter being replaced twice bothered me but over all I liked the story and will be reading the next one.

Unusual hero

Biggs is recently out of the Military, trying to find where he belongs. Part time skip work brings him some brutal injuries and somehow he's caught up in a mob slave trade (children ). He's determined to find a young girl who tried to steal the tires off his truck, and help save her. This guy is the poster child for what NOT to do. Luckily he has a tech smart friend and family looking out for him.

Hero is a straightforward and straight-ahead thinking hard-charger. Violence is present without sensationalization, and not too bloody. Evil is suggested rather than blatantly described. Where’s Book Two?😉

Jamie McFarlane is at the top of my list of fantasy and science fiction writers. I’ve adored all of the books he’s written in both of these genres. No surprise then that I was willing to take a chance on When Justice Calls, the first of his contemporary “Henry Biggston Thrillers”. I’m glad I did. This was an absolute adrenaline fueled thriller of a ride from the start to the very end, and I think I’m a bit in awe of Henry "Biggs" Biggston, the lead character here, a recently discharged Army Ranger who ends up taking on “a seriously organized crime syndicate” in order save innocent girls from sexual slavery. This is amazingly great stuff, with great characters and a fantastic plot. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

I like Jamie McFarlane's writing, but I was a bit apprehensive about his getting away from science fiction and fantasy, and writing a thriller especially about a former US Army Ranger. However, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the book. While I can nitpick about some small items like where he has Biggs say he was in the 75th Battalion (loc 577), overall the story surpassed my expectations and makes me want to read the follow-on. Hopefully he will avoid another gratuitous (and embarrassing) sex scene, and maybe this time some people will get wounded and not all conveniently die, but for all that, McFarlane is a very good author and I'm looking forward to Book 2.

I don’t like giving out one-star reviews, especially for an author I usually like, but this was just awful. Like bad John Grisham written by a wingnut. In between fondling guns - seriously, a good quarter of this book is just descriptions of guns and people handling guns - they stumble from one ridiculous coincidence to another to expose a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top! He can’t turn the corner without bumping into another vet who wants to give him a clue, or a car, or just a huge bag of guns. He must sound like an ironmongers when he walks.

Not Telling

Mr. McFarlane changes genres as easily as most guys change shirts. For him I have to say I like his style.
This book reads like a more contemporary, harder edged Travis McGee. High intensity action, bad guys as sick as bad guys can get and justice served made this a straight through, non-stop read.
Put this one on your "to be read" list - you won't be disappointed.
And if you were wondering, I don't work for Mr McFarlane, his publisher, Amazon or Kindle. Neither did anyone give me a copy of this book in exchange for anything.
Do yourself a favor, read it. If you dont like it ... ?

A very different kind of story from Jamie. I really like the people in Jamie's universe and truly enjoy be part of their experiences. This first new story, in what I hope is another series of stories, is an excellent start. I really like Biggs and there are aspects of this character that remind me of me at a much younger age. I'd really like to buy him a few drinks and provide some coaching... but I fully expect these will have to be lessons from the school of hard knocks. I'm curious if Jamie will let us get closer to other characters in this new series... I'm really looking forward to the next one in this series to see Biggs develop and grow as Jamie has done in his other series.

To say it started slow is and understatement. I generally read before bed and sometimes not for long. By the time I got close to 40% in I had to go to the description to remind myself what the book was about. I then took some time to review so I understood the characters and then moved forward. Finally at 40% the discovery of sex trafficking was introduced. A little late in the book I think. From that point forward it was fast action and interesting. I'm glad I stuck it out. This is the first book I've read from this author and am not interested in science fiction, so will look for more in this series.

This was great, fast reading!

Henry Biggston is a former Ranger who has returned home following his most recent tour of duty. He is working part time for a cousin as a bounty hunter, sometimes successful, sometimes not so much. His cousin also got Biggs
working toward obtaining his PI license. The story is fast moving and full of action. The characters who form his immediate cadre are diverse and likable which is good since this is the first story in a new series. The plot is believable and deals partly with child trafficking. It’s nice to see a new character who wants to do the right thing. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.

Good Read

In not one for vigilante stories, but I did like this enough that I'm reading the next in the series.
I've read McFarlane's Dominion Sci-fi series (as far as it goes) and figured I'd take a chance on this genre.
McFarlane is good at capturing the reader's attention and keeping those pages turning. The characters are relatable and well rounded. The plots are complex and the storylines are commiserate with those complexities.
I recommend that you don't start his books when there is someplace you have to be in the morning.☺

Justice And Procedure Are Not The Same

Henry Biggston, a recently discharged Army Ranger, is having trouble readjusting to civilian life. In his several jobs, he comes across a sex slavery ring involving young girls. His protective nature activated, Biggs can't let go until he saves the innocent girls, even though many advise that he leave it alone for his own sake. I like the action, humor, and romance. Will we get another story? I look forward to another book.
