Perfect for fans of Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and the previous Stick Dog books, Tom Watson’s hilarious series continues with Stick Dog Craves Candy—a fun Halloween adventure!
Stick Dog and the gang are on their usual hunt for food, but there is something unusual going on. Little humans are dressed up as creepy witches and spooky ghosts, all carrying big orange buckets!
Their search leads them to something unexpected and delicious and sweet—candy! Once they get a taste, they will stop at nothing to get more. The gang will have to avoid terrifying witches and even escape a creepy haunted house! Will Stick Dog's smarts, courage, and patience be enough to lead his buddies to the best treats ever?
Witches, and ghosts, and goblins...and Stick Dog and friends! Oh my!
Tom is the author and draws the original sketches for all the Stick Dog stories. He lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter and son. They also have a dog named Shadow. Tom did not want to name the dog Shadow. He wanted to name him ‘Put Your Shirt On.’ It’s a long story. Sometimes when Tom is visiting schools, he shares the story.
Tom’s first jobs out of college were in politics. He worked for U.S. Senator John Glenn and as the Chief Speechwriter for the Governor of Ohio. He has also worked in marketing and advertising. He likes writing books for kids a lot more than writing speeches and other things for grown-ups. He thinks kids are way smarter than grown-ups.
Stick Dog and his friends return for another adventure in the seventh installment of the Stick Dog series: Stick Dog Craves Candy. While out on their nightly scavenger hunt for food, Stripes sees something terrifying. Two witches in a house across the street!
Poo-Poo, Mutt, Karen and Stripes look to Stick Dog for answers. Realizing that it must be Halloween, he and his friends come up with a plan to get candy from all of the houses in the neighborhood. Can this band of pooches remain unseen in their candy quest? Will humans spoil their Halloween fun? Will anyone ever figure out what Karen is talking about?
I could not put this book down! I absolutely love it! Stick Dog and his hilarious canine companions are sure to tickle readers' funny bones. I found myself laughing at their antics with every turn of the page. I can also relate to Stick Dog's role as leader as he tries to deal with his friends in a caring and compassionate manner even when they frustrate him.
I also love how the pages of the book look like that of a notebook. It gives the reader a feeling that he/she is reading a diary. The unique spacing of text is very eye catching and makes for added suspense.
Watson's illustrations are basic, yet adorable and funny. Children will be drawn (no pun intended) to the characters of Stick Dog and his friends. My personal favorite is Karen, the Dachshund. Owning a Dachshund, I can easily relate to Karen's forgetful personality.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves Halloween and dogs. Children ages 8-12 will delight in Stick Dog's adventures. I cannot wait to read more books from this wonderful series.

Stick Dog and his friends Mutt, Karen, Stripes and Poo-Poo are once again looking for food. There are little humans all dressed up in costumes carrying bags and buckets. When the little humans go to the doors of houses, the big humans give them candy. How can the dogs get in on this?
Another silly offering by Watson, book 7 is just as much fun. Although each book stands on its own - Book 1 should be read first. The illustrations are simple and funny (and are the best part of the book) A very easy read, this series would be a great transition into chapter books. While the humor would not be lost on middle schoolers, the simplicity of this text is better suited for elementary school.

Ah, Stick Dog, he makes us laugh, often out loud, and this book was no exception. Stick Dog's friends are equally funny, although in their case you are laughing time at them. Stick Dog's reactions to his friends' antics, and the strength, patience and kindness he shows, is equally funny. My son's reactions makes these books a joy to read out loud.
This book takes place on Halloween - a great time to crave candy. The plot isn't very creative. In the end the dogs come upon a house where the owners aren't home. The home owners have left a bowl of self-serve candy for all the trick-or-treaters. Realistic, but not as funny as many of the other books in this series.
Okay so first things first: Mom perspective Stick Dog is the brains of this operation. 9 year old sons perspective: these guys have some awesome, do able ideas!
Again we are reading this book together for school and Mom and Dad are rolling our eyes and shaking our heads and son is laughing so much he can't even read. I don't know guess it's a kid thing.
My 11 year old son says: “I like all the Stick Dog books and Halloween is my favorite holiday. This book was about Halloween and I like candy too and it taste good and it just reminded me of my mom making my family caramel apples that tasted so good. We also leave a bucket of candy at the front door for kids on Halloween and when we get home from trick or treating, all the candy is gone”
I don't know if I'd enjoy this series quite as much if I didn't use them as read alouds for my kiddos. Doing all the different voices is fun and the story itself has my kiddos laughing out loud throughout it.
The Stick Dog series are so much fun to read. Danny and I both bust out in giggling fits over the antics of Stick Dog, Mutt, Poo Poo, Stripes and Karen.
Another fun episode in the Stick Dog series. Here, the pups discover Halloween traditions. The characters are a hoot, and my students enjoy hearing about their antics.
Everyone loves candy right? This is a book that takes place in halloween where the dogs hunt for candy. This book is humorous and very mysterious. They struggle to find out what these humans are doing and what the hoilday is. If you like these kind of books the stick dog books are for you.
