His short stories were well-structured and innovative, and encompassed the diverse to the divergent in urban Indian society. The themes of poverty, degradation, caste, the intermittent conflict between religion and rationality and themes of the rural-urban divide are a thematically occurring refrain in much of his work. He experimented with the stylistic nuances of Bengali prose and tried to offer alternative linguistic parameters to the high-class elite prosaic Bengali language. It was basically an effort to make the Bengali literature free from softness, excessive romance and use of old style of writing which were prevalent in older writings.

রোদ দাও।
একঘেয়ে একরঙা ম্যাড়মেড়ে ছবি
আত্মার অরুচি।
রোদ দাও
এ অশুচি মুছি!
মুখ তার মনেও পড়ে না।
ভিজে দিন, ফ্যাকাশে প্রভাত,
তারা-মোছা গুমোটের রাত,
আর কত?
মরা চারা, পাতাও ধরে না।
বন্দী মন রুগ্ন ঘরে
স্যাঁতসেঁতে স্মৃতি নাড়ে চাড়ে
কোথায় বা যাবে সন্তর্পণে পা টিপে পা টিপে।
আদিগন্ত পঙ্কিল পিচ্ছিল।
রোদ দাও
ফাটল ধরাও
আকাশের পলি-জমা বুকে।
সকৌতুক সবিস্ময় নীল
ঝরুক
ধরুক
নদী, সমুদ্র ও প্রাণে।

অসাধারন!
সাগর এ যায় সবাই , কেউ যায় জীবিকার খোজে, কেউবা যায় আনন্দভ্রমনে।সময়ের উত্তাল ডেউয়ে কেউবা যায় মিশে বা হারিয়ে, ফিরে নীড়ে অনেকেই ফিরেনা।অনেকের ফিরতে ইচ্ছে করেনা,থেকে যাওয়ার যেন অদম্য ইচ্ছে পোষন করে।
সাগর এ যায় সবাই , কেউ যায় জীবিকার খোজে, কেউবা যায় আনন্দভ্রমনে।সময়ের উত্তাল ডেউয়ে কেউবা যায় মিশে বা হারিয়ে, ফিরে নীড়ে অনেকেই ফিরেনা।অনেকের ফিরতে ইচ্ছে করেনা,থেকে যাওয়ার যেন অদম্য ইচ্ছে পোষন করে।

" সাগর থেকে ফেরা" কি অদ্ভুত না। সাগরের থেকে ফিরতে কি কারো মন চায়? সবাই তো একবুক সাগর সমান ভালবাসা নিয়ে বেঁচে থাকে। কেউ একাকীত্ব, কেউ নিজেকে জানার জন্য সাগরের কাছে নিজেকে সমর্পণ করে।
"এ এক জোনাকি মন
জ্বলে আর নেভে,
অন্ধকার পার হবে ভেবে,
ইতি উতি ধায়;
নিজের ভেতর কেউ যদি অন্ধকারকে পালন করে সে করি অন্ধকার কাটাতে পারে কখন? লেখক কি জানে না, এখন সবার মনে অন্ধকার। কেউ সুখী নয়, এই সভ্যতার অপরিণত তদভব রূপে।
" এ জোনাকি মন জানি,
কোনো দিন পাবে না উত্তর!"
হয়তো পাবে না তবে আশায় থাকবে এই মন বেঁচে থাকার। নারকেলের নীচে কূয়োর পারে সে বাঁচবে তোমার মত জোনাকির অপেক্ষায়।
কত সুন্দর একটি বই। পড়লে মনে হয় বারবার প্রেমে পড়ি, মানুষের না কিন্তু বইয়ের প্রত্যেকটি শব্দে।
