The initial translators are rough and frankly bad/confusing, but I'm hoping that since it changed hands that it went to better translators because this is an interesting setting with zombies, cultivation, magical powers, etc *prayer circle*
One of my favourite apocalyptic novels. There's a nice pacing of the story and even thought the MC is way too OP, it's not boring at all. The translation is not the best but it's good.
The start is pretty slow. MC goes back to one year before the apocalypse. Most novels only go back a few months and then speed through this "preparation" stage. However, in this story we have a whole year, and we are not speeding through at all. I am 20 chapters in and we are still about halfway through that "before" year. Lots of spiritual cultivation, and training, and buying, which are frankly not the most interesting.
The ML has shown up once, but due to the quality of the translation it was a bit hard to understand what was going on. You can kind of deduce things by the end, but mostly there are some big chunks where we are left wondering WTF just happened.
Also, not sure if it is due to the translation or to the original writer, but the MC has some inconsistencies when it comes to his feelings about the ML (before they meet in the second apocalypse). At some point he is saying that he just wants to take care of him and keep him safe and repay the debt he owes. But then he is saying how he misses him and has feelings for him, but then goes back to the original thought of just taking care of him. To be honest going by his past experiences it doesn't make sense for the MC to feel anything other than gratitude for the ML at this point, since their relationship was not particularly romantic in any way;
I read another 20 chapters and I am still finding it not that interesting. Have dropped it now for a while. Thinking of going back at some point and trying to read things up to the start of the zombie apocalypse at least, but no rush in doing so.
This novel was well translated (even if it took 3 translators). However, I'm not sure I enjoyed the plot (what there was of it) or the characters.
The characters were a bit dislikable. The main character arbitrarily hates people. Anything can set him off, from looking too smart, being too nice, or trying to kill him. Only one of those is a real offense. He also is proudly dumb (brawn over brain, which is actually usually not the best way to raise your status) and uses everyone while giving very little on return.
Everything his dad does for him is just treated as a matter of course (what a horrible, entitled, spoiled outlook). Anyone who tries to get mutual benefits from him is treated suspiciously (despite him doing the exact same). The kind grandparents who took him on are bought off and then left to die. Everyone who can't live as well is treated with mild contempt, despite the fact that the only reason he's better off is because this is his second run through.
His lover is also ridiculous. Towards the end, he just becomes arm candy that occasionally shows off his fighting skill. He has very little actual personality or motivation.
The side characters are poorly developed for the most part, and many times dropped without resolution.
Towards the end though, I'm not sure I really cared, I just wanted to finish just to see if I missed anything (I didn't)

I like a lot about this web novel, with a secondary M/M romance, but what I dislike most is the casting of one of the men in the relationship as "the woman". So obnoxiously sexist. I don't think gay men do this in Western culture, but perhaps this isn't true in current Chinese gay culture. There is a different variety of homophobia there (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full...), so it might be the case. But as a Western reader, it's super grating and almost made me rate the book lower.
However, the overall quality of the book, which is more action-adventure than romance, makes me give it a solid stars. It's a dystopic zombie apocalypse progression fantasy with less focus on leveling and more on action-adventure that starts with the main character returning from the past with the need to prevent how he died.
Wow, it was a pretty intriguing novel. IMO, while there's quite a bit of fluff, it is not too overwhelming and sweet. The novel is way more focused on collection and conquering. A little bit of smut and some comedic elements.
While MC underwent rebirth, other than bringing over his existing knowledge and skillsets of the apocalypse, and his abilities, the progress of his past and reborn life actually differed quite a lot. MC is pretty OP with his abilities and pre-prep, but MC and ML still had to go through some trials and tribulations. I really enjoyed reading about the slow progress and building up of MC and ML and their gang of followers.
However, I do have some complaints (>.<). Firstly, there are way too many names. I got confused reading about so many characters. Thankfully, only a handful appear after like 50+ chapters. I had to Ctrl+F the name to see if it was a new character or someone mentioned previously. Secondly, the ending was way too abrupt!!! BUTTT it was mentioned that the author went through some personal issues, so I can't really fault that. It's really a pity. I wished I could have read more on the peaceful life.
Well, I like this genre pretty much a loooot! But there's so few and so not well written. I hope to find better ones!! Sometimes I'm tempted to write them myself! Why there is so little and so stupid! 🥺 Anyway, it was fun, liked it, wished been better 😄
Translation before 35 was nearly uncomprehensible so I dodn't get a lot of things. I fkn hate the "they wouldn't have survived anyways" narrative so much. So self righteous. Pissed me off The military base zombies are the cutest
Fun and entertaining. Some sections dragged a little, but mostly kept me hooked. Ending seemed very rushed, but I did like the final mission and surprise characters/allies made there.
LOVED IT!!! I was slightly upset by how abruptly it ended but it was nice overall. I wished there were some tidbits of Queen Bai and Zombie cutie Yang but I imagine that they'll cause some havoc and be best buddies once Yang drinks enough spring water.
