A man without a plan is a shell without purpose. Which is why when I sat down nine years ago and put pen to paper, mapping out a ten-year plan, I meant business. Everything that could set me up for a lifetime of joy had to go down on the list, and every day, I worked my ass off to fulfill it. Open my own sports agency. Check. Earn first million by my thirtieth birthday. I did that a week before I turned twenty-six. Negotiate the most lucrative contract in Major League history. Did that, too. Then went and broke my own record. (Thanks, big bro!) I could go on, but this isn’t about bragging. It’s me admitting that in the midst of drafting something that helps shape and mold much of my success, I still made a costly mistake. One day I realized all those entries with corresponding checkmarks are pointless if I don’t factor into the equation the most important goal of all. Avery. Perhaps way back then I wasn’t ready to see how much my best friend of fifteen years deserved that number one spot in my life. Maybe I was blind, since the whole “settle down and get married” scenario wasn’t my thing. But now that I’m aware of the role I need her to fill in my life, there’s no such thing as letting go until I can convince her to be mine. Her being about to marry someone else does make winning her heart a little bit dicey. But if there’s anything you should know about me, it’s that I always play to win. And losing Avery is nonnegotiable.
The Breakup Plan A Best Friends to Enemies Romance
Tia Kelly is the author of contemporary romance and women's fiction. She is known for her candid way of capturing life's moments, one character at a time.
The Breakup Plan was a fast paced story where you're introduced to Avery and Drew. Drew is a big time sports agent and Avery is his assistant and just happens to be his best friend going on fifteen years. When Avery drops the bomb that she is getting married, the dynamics changes for the both of them. Feelings that they kept suppressed for so many years rise to the surface and all hell breaks loose. I personally felt the story had holes in it, maybe if it was longer then the author could elaborate more and the other characters would have played more of a part in the storyline. Also the title doesn't match what actually happened in the book. Even though I enjoyed reading Avery and Drew's journey, I think I would have loved a longer, more descriptive story where the reader could get a better understanding of each of the characters and how they fall in place in this love story.
Avery and Drew are best friends and she is also his assistant, but the day he finds out she is getting married he realizes she is way more to him and he will do whatever takes to make her his not matter what it may cost either of them.
Wow what a great read, I finished this book in no time. It captured me from the first sentence to the end, I could not put it down until I finished it. This was my first book by this author and I look forward to reading more by her. I love best friend to Lovers relationships but this one was totally different and I enjoyed every moment of it, it was one twist I thought was going to be predictable but it was nothing like I expected.
I enjoyed reading Drew and Avery's love journey. It was good that they had a strong bond and were always there for each other. I don't understand why Avery even back tracked with Johnathon after he did what he did the first time that they dated. I'm glad Drew shut the marriage down because Johnathon didn't deserve Avery. I'm glad that Drew and Avery got their HEA with a baby on the way.
The Wilkerson crew is getting larger and all married off. For a minute I was worried about this friends to enemies to lovers story. It was perfect in the end. Bravo Ms. Kelly!
I'm a Tia Kelly fan, but something about this book didn't click with me. It's been a minute since we've gotten a story from her, so I was really looking forward to this one, especially after reading about the premise. I immediately liked Avery and Drew and was happy about catching up with the Wilkersons. But there was too much hinting at and not enough fleshing out, IMO, and I had way more questions than answers (what happened in Cuba? what exactly was in the contract that Avery wanted Drew to sign? What in the hell was Kendra thinking?)
Good story, just not my favorite from this author.
There were just too many holes in this story. The places where descriptions could have been helpful were lacking. I could also tell that the stories of other characters had already been told but there was no indication that this was a series. Even if it was, usually there’s more of a description of characters to help flesh out relationships but here there were none. The result is I kind of felt like I was missing something throughout the book. I also don’t understand the title. Doesn’t seem to match the story.
In the Breakup Plan, Drew Wilkerson is a successful sports agent and his best friend of 15 years, Avery, serves as his assistant. Out of the blue, Avery tells him she is getting married and Drew is unprepared for this revelation. Their friendship shifts soon after. She’s been in love with him since she can remember but has been content to bury those feelings. Drew knows he can’t live without Avery; both personally and professionally, and is not willing to let her go as the constant presence in his life.
Feelings come bubbling to the surface and both Avery and Drew must decide what the next phase of their relationship looks like.
I thought this was a solid story though I must admit the title didn’t really match the storyline. There were also a few plot holes. The first few chapters had nice buildup as we learned more about the dynamic of Avery and Drew’s relationship, and then I felt like we were in a race as the rest of the story seemingly flew by. There were a lot of subplots introduced that I think we needed more details about, especially as it pertained to Drew’s time in Cuba and Avery’s past. We got hints of Avery’s past a bit in the first few chapters and then we got a couple pages of what really happened towards the end that made me want more.
I think if we got a slightly longer book with a few of these details fleshed out, this would have really pushed the novel over the edge for me.
**I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review**
I was thrilled to receive an ARC of The Breakup Plan. I am a huge fan of Tia’s books and the Wilkerson’s series. So I am a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to feel a connection to Drew and Avery’s story. There we so many questions I had while reading the book. Some of them were answered regarding Avery and some things just left me wondering. There were elements in the story that I found funny and entertaining. But I felt like something was missing, maybe more detail on certain parts could have made more of a connection for me. The book is not boring, it maintains a relatively fast pace. And it’s a great series. I did like how the author had other characters from the series in the story, that was nice. It’s always nice to have a HEA.
I’m a fan of Tia Kelly and have read almost all of her stories. I love the characters and how they all intertwine with family history.
The Breakup Plan fell short for me. I had to re-read dialogue to comprehend who was talking. Questions were left unanswered or vague. What was the nature of the production and why was Paige and Kenneth upset? A re-cap would have filled in some gaps.
I would have liked more background on Avery., but Maybe I missed something, if it was introduced in another novel.
I did however enjoy how Drew and Avery came together. It was not all neatly tied up in a bow, there friendship was tested and strained, but they triumphed in the end.
Perhaps Tia Kelly will give us more of Andrew and Avery.

I have been engrossed in The Wilkerson Family this week because I re-read it getting ready for this release. The series was even better the second time around. It was great catching up with all the families of this series. Avery’s backstory caught me surprise. I want more! Lol. I wanted to read the letter. Hopefully we’ll get more in the future from this family. I enjoyed it.
Drew and Avery was so freaking sweet! I love that throughout everything the sounded like best friends. As a person living my HEA with my bestie this was so true to life. I haven't read anything else by the author. With that said, this was a slam dunk.
Drew and Avery had a very interesting backstory! Their relationship gives a different spin on the "friends-to-lover scenario! Loved them and the family support. Tia Kelly spices it up humor, drama and love each and everytime!
Quite a bit was going on in this book. Yes, there's a friends to lovers situation. Then there's the crazy ex girlfriend/threesome/church boy/adoption/fake paternity thing. Like I said, mixed emotions
This was a real good read. Avery worked all my nerves. How I just love that Drew. So happy for that ending. I wish she would have put her back with her first child in the book. I was waiting for that.
I enjoyed this engaging and entertaining story. Tia Kelly tells a good story. There’s humor, romance, steam, and drama. The HEA is quite gratifying. I recommend THE BREAK UP PLAN, and the other books that feature this eclectic fictional family. Enjoy!
Andrew was dragging his feet when it came to Avery. Avery ended up engaged and getting married within the next couple of months. Andrew had a choice to make step b up or get left behind. The story was missing something hence the 4 stars.
This is my first time reading a book by this author, and I enjoyed reading it. Drew and Avery almost waited to late, but I'm glad that things worker out accordingly.
Drew and Avery have been friends for a while, including now when Drew is Avery's boss. Everything is going fine until Avery finally comes clean that she is getting married. Now Drew realizes that he has feelings for Avery, and does pretty much everything in his power to break up Avery and her fiancé so that the two of them can be together. I enjoyed the story, but at times, there could have been more information as well as rushed at times.
I don’t judge a book by its length but I do expect a complete a story. THE BREAKUP PLAN by Tia Kelly is a short book. It has a good framework but I felt the story was incomplete. Questions were left unanswered and significant life events were not treated with the gravity I would have expected. As a result the story felt disjointed and I was unconvinced about Andrew and Avery as a couple
The author’s writing style flows well and the book was easy to read. There just needed to be more of it. A lot more.
This one had a few curve balls I didn't foresee. Overall I liked both main characters. I think there were some unnecessary drama added to the story that wasn't needed. Especially since it had such a quick resolution. It was a fun, quick read
