When she is injured in an attack by a rogue band of wolves, Rosalyn Kincanon awakens days later to discover that she has been turned and is now a shifter herself. Furious, she escapes from the local pack that nursed her back to health and finds a place of her own in an all-female pack.
After that pack is forced to disband, however, Rosalyn finds herself being pursued by the powerful alpha of the pack that once saved her life, who is convinced that she is his mate.
As a USA Today bestselling romance author, Delta James aims to captivate readers with stories about complex heroines and the dominant alpha males who adore them. For Delta, romance is more than just a love story; it’s a journey with challenges and thrills along the way.
After creating a second chapter for herself that was dramatically different than the first, Delta now resides in Florida where she relaxes on warm summer evenings with her loveable pack of basset hounds as they watch the birds, squirrels, and lizards. When not crafting fast-paced tales, she enjoys horseback riding, hiking, and white-water rafting.

'Mastering His Mate' is the third book in Delta James' "Wayward Mates" series and, to be honest, they just get better with each book in the series. The beginning of this one is a bit intense, both physically in the book and emotionally in reading it. Rosalyn, aka Roz, and her sister Liza have been on their own for many years, ever since their parents died in an accident, so their bond is tighter than most sisters. As luck would have it, they've won an all-expense trip to a Hampton's resort. After checking to make sure everything was on the up and up, they took advantage of their good fortune and went. That decision would forever change both of their lives. Oliver Halsey is alpha to the pack in the Hamptons. It's a well-established, prosperous pack that goes back centuries. He also knows it's a prime location for other rogue wolves to hunt for females, something he has no tolerance for. Once again Delta James has pulled me into this story where we not only get to meet these new characters but actually feel like it's a movie playing out right in front of me. The danger, adventure, the strong personalities, the chemistry, love, and mutual respect and admiration all combine to make this one heck of a story.
I loved how Delta James introduced us to a little more of the shifter's world with each book. Whilst this can be read as a stand alone, and is my favourite book so far, I do think reading either of the first two books will give you a better understanding of the all female Bae Diogel pack and the politics behind disbanding them.
I really liked both main characters, Roz is one tough as nails heroine who NEVER backed down and never lost her fire. Oliver was very sympathetic to and incredibly understanding of Roz's plight of her pack being forcibly disbanded. It didn't stop him punishing her a few times, but I loved how he took the time to discuss with and listen to Roz, as well as taking into account that she wasn't a natural shifter. He's an alpha through and through but clearly put Roz's well being before anything else.
It is a patriarchal society and whilst Oliver insisted on having Roz's submission, he not only respected her for it but also gave the impression that he would like to see females having more of a say in the structure of their society.
There is a story thread that runs throughout the series, building towards some type of conflict. Whilst that part of the story isn't completed in this book, it IS a complete story with a HEA. The background story will continue in future books that feature other couples and I for one can't wait to read them.
I don't see how people enjoy these books I had read the previous books a while back and this one popped up on my list of books that might interest me and once I started reading it I remembered the other books and I just couldn't finish it. The worst part is the first half of the book is introducing us to what Roz and her sister went through when they were changed without their consent. Next two chapters or so was her at the all female pack and how they tried to escape capture. Then it was a lot of fussing, cussing, and swearing to kill the man that dared to try and claim her. Then you get to read about the knot and they all act like a bunch of high School girls that are gossiping about their first time seeing a guy in the buff. And it goes on and on and on even when her and Oliver were getting intimate it was either talking about the knot or he was threatening to put her over his knee for a bare bottom spanking this whole series is nothing but a major rinse and repeat of the original.
Different from other book that I read that had some rough sex this one really cross the bother to woman abuse. The women are actually hurt and everything is forgiven because the men loves and take care of her. I am from brazil and people die here not recognizing a us relationships. I read other books with sex and spanking but this one was the first to go beyond and make me sad and without power and think all the time about abuse relationships. There is no problem with rough sex and women that are empowered. My opinion is that this book is a disservice to society. I am sorry for being so cruel on my critic but this one just hit on a very wrong way. I am also sorry to the author because the book is well written and easy to follow the plot has begin middle and end but I can not leave a good review.
I really love ❤️ this book it is the third volume in this series and just like the two previous ones it is very steamy and it this thing were the Alpha’s knot and tie their Fated Mate and it is so hot 🔥 You are sure to love this series if you like shifter Romance with Spanking. ❤️
The story is the third in the series and really gives the reader a new perspective on Roz and Oliver that we met in Brought to Heel. What a page-turner of a story with fascinating characters, plenty of angst, attitude, and decisions to be made. I found this story very different from most shifter stories, and that is awesome. While this is an ongoing saga, there is enough back information within this story to keep a reader updated and could be read as a stand-alone.
What I especially liked in Mastering His Mate is that it was like the rest of the story going back to Roz and her sister, Liza, and how a rogue band of wolves attacked them, Rosalyn Kincanon awoke to discover that her life had changed forever. Her sister, Liza, had cancer and being turned, cured her, but for Roz, she suffered for weeks and refused to be held hostage by a pack and will escape where she will finally find her way down the coast from the Hamptons to North Carolina and will become the Beta of Bae Diogel.
“I’ll stay long enough to talk to Liza; then I’m gone. And you’d better tell the big bad wolf there if he thinks he’s going to spank me, he’d better think again. Ask me no questions, Doc, and I’ll tell you no lies.”
From the time Oliver Halsey, Alpha of the Hampton pack saw Rozalyn’s picture; he knew she was his fated mate. He was in Europe on business when Roz and Liza had been turned and rescued by his Hampton Pack, but Roz was gone when he returned. He will join with Dylan to rescue the pack of women from Bae Diogel before the ruling council does something, giving the women a better chance and future. He will let Dyland know that Roz is his.
“Oliver Halsey? Powerful pack, your sister, is in. A good man, but male alpha all the way. The men rule and the women obey or else. We need to talk to the rest of the girls and see who might be interested.”
As planned, Oliver will chase her to ground and force her surrender. He makes her change from her wolf to her human and tells her how things will be.
“Not this time, my love. Enjoy your last days of freedom. This time, I will take you to mate and bring you home. And I warned you about growling at me, little girl. That is unacceptable. It is high time you learned to mind your manners, but more importantly, learned to mind me.”
“Because you are difficult and stubborn; proud and defiant; intelligent and courageous; loving and kind. Why wouldn’t I want you? You are my mate. I was born to love you and you alone. So, will you yield to me?”
“You need to learn that I will hold you accountable for your bad behavior. When you misbehave, act in a disrespectful manner, break a rule, or disobey me, you will earn yourself a very sore bottom. I will not allow you to continue to behave as you did before you became my mate.”
The story shares more about Roz before she was turned as a wolf, how it happened, what happened, and why she went to Bae Diogel. More about her life and work and then picks up and what things are like once Oliver claims her. He is fair but expects her to adhere to rules, and when she disobeys, he will take her to task. The story has many spanking scenes but many more explicit scenes of loving. As Alpha, he will knot her and tie her to him, and what she once feared now she craves.
“Tied to her mate in the most primal, erotic, and sensual way, his breath caressing her neck, she recognized for the very first time in her life; she was truly and utterly home, madly in love and deliriously happy with no reservations. She understood that although there might be storm clouds approaching, she was where she had always belongs, wrapped in the arms of her mate—a man and a wolf who had loved her before, loved her now, and would love her through all eternity.”
There are more books to come in this series. A meeting will be coming with Oliver, Dylan, and Jean-Michel as they hear chatter about problems from rogue wolves—ones who want to steal women and have shown how brazen than can be.
“Our women are sacred to us. And that we will fight, die, and kill, if we have to, in order to keep them safe.”
Hated it. I can ignore the endless spelling mistakes, and plot errors, if the alpha isn’t controlling and horrid.
I was actually looking forward to Oliver’s book, as he seemed more modern and forward thinking. He actually seemed worse. But then Roz isn’t endearing either!!She acts like a brat when she doesn’t get her own way.
Roz and her sister Liza, are turned into shifters by men who want them for breeding. They are rescued by Oliver’s pack and Liza mates with the beta there. Roz is horrid. She attacks the doctor, who is trying to help her, threatens him with a scalpel. Twice. (Why would you leave a scalpel next to her????) When Oliver sees a picture of the two sisters, he realises that Roz is his mate. For whatever reason, he doesn’t say anything and she escapes and goes to live with the Bio women. When the bio pack is disbanded Roz is hunted down by Oliver. And of course she fights him, and loves it when he spanks her. Yawn…
I’ve got to say, that I’m not a massive fan, of the spanking to be punished thing. I don’t see how controlling women so completely is healthy. But hey ho. I did enjoy parts of the book. I was just expecting a lot more from Oliver. At one point he sends Roz to bed, like a child. When she’s not in bed and has been on a tour with her sister, he takes a belt to her!!! Nearly gave up on it at that point! 😡😡😡😡😡
Loads of spelling mistakes again. And bizarrely they’re often the same ones.
Book 3 of a series with each book having different levels. On one level is a book with an interesting story of strong female shifters being involved with dominant male shifters fighting against unethical European packs who are turning human women against their will or trying to steal shifter women.
On another level is the whole idea of male dominance, female submission, and discipline. If you find any of these themes offensive, this is not the book or series for you.
I think Roz and Oliver's story was more intense just by the sheer fact that Roz was so fiercely independent. Even before she and Liza were turned against their will, and before Roz joined Skyler's pack, Roz was all about being free. Bash and Lisa's mating was not quite as difficult.
I am very interested in seeing how Dylan and Skylar, Darby and Jean-Michel, and Oliver and Roz's packs come together to prepare for the ensuing battle with the European packs.
Delta James continues her wayward series with badass heroines and dominate Alphas that love them and boy I love reading them... Roz and her sister Liza find themselves in a situation where they are turned into wolf shifters against their will but are saved from being taken back to a pack to be mated, and once they go through the transition Liza is claimed by her loving mate but Roz is angry and is intent on leaving which she does....when she joined the Bae Diogel pack. This book contains and continues on from the first book Bought to Heel as Roz is claimed by Oliver the alpha of the pack that saved her from the rogue group of shifters that changed her. I found this book to be fast paced and couldn’t put it down once I started it....and for me it’s 5 stars
Finally! One that I really actually enjoyed. Were there issues? Absolutely. There is way too much emphasis on dominance. We get it. He strong alpha. She weak female. Blah. It only has to be brought up once alright?
But this book actually had some depth. It wasn't all a dominance display. Roz was a strong character.. who yes did change a bit.. but she was also alot happier at the end with Oliver. So I am good with it. Oliver well.. he was an alpha male but I enjoyed him.
“Because you are difficult and stubborn; proud and defiant; intelligent and courageous; loving and kind. Why wouldn’t I want you? You are my mate. I was born to love you and you alone. So, will you yield to me?”
I loved that line from him. It perfectly depicts the book. Yes he 100% wants her submission but he still likes who she is.
Had so much potential but the unwarranted spankings killed it!
H- Oliver (Alpha) h- Rosalyn (human forced to be a wolf for breeding) I stopped at 62% I just couldn’t take it with all that “punishment/spanking” because they misbehave or doesn’t do what the male (mate) tells them too. Listen I can understand spanking for foreplay (in the act) but the author with all that spanking made it seem that the female opinions means nothing. Female- can’t talk back, has to do everything he says to do. For example she (h) wanted to pleased him by going down & he stopped it & said that she needed to ask permission MEANWHILE the male can rape her again & again even though she is repeatedly saying “no” they completely disregard the female’s feels. So annoying!
Book three in the Wayward Mates series is amazing! I absolutely love Roz and Oliver's connection! Roz is a human turned against her will. She decides to strike out on her own and finally settles with the women she calls pack. When that pack is disbanded she is ruin to ground by her fated mate, Oliver.
The Alpha of the Hamptons pack knows that Roz has been his fated mate from the first picture that he saw of her. Now he must help her to accept what she already knows.
Roz and Oliver are both strong and independent. I love how dominating Olivier can be without diminishing Roz! A story that keeps you on the edge of your seat! LOVE THIS STORY!
I LOVE this series!!! It is truly the best! This is Roz and Oliver's story. I loved reading Roz's perspective about what has happened in the earlier books. It rounded out the story even more! Of course, there are spankings and dominance, but there is love and acceptance as well. These men are truly loving to their women.
I can't wait for the next book. Please write quickly Delta!
This was another great fated mates story. The beta of the all woman pack meets her match in the alpha of the Hamptons pack. Her sister’s fated match is also a part of this story. I love that Oliver had to have patience before he met her, and then afterwards until she came around. He was quite sweet in his romance, and even though he spanked Roz for disobedience, he never really tried to change her!
Roz and her sister were enjoying what they thought to be a lucky weekend get away to the Hamptons. However luck is often misused as a disguise for trouble. These Jersey girls were about to have their lives turned from human to shifter!
The only true luck seemed to be Fate had chosen their mates well. And their new friends were just the icing on top!
The beginning of this installment was excellent. I really enjoyed the storyline. I was worried that this book would be like book two, but it turned out to be a wonderful read. Roz and Oliver started out rocky but love conquered all in the end. Another power couple!
I don't believe in giving a man control over my body in any way. but when it comes to this book I see the storyline the writer wanted and used in these books. I could not put it down, I had to literally force myself to sleep at night instead of staying up all night to read.
This is the third book in the Wayward Mates series. This is Oliver and Roz's story. It has a dominant, alpha male and the strong and feisty female that he wants to claim as his mate. I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an advanced reader copy.
Ms. James does it again, another unique addition to the series. I enjoyed how we learned about Roz and Liza’s past and how they were turned. It added so much depth to the story. A truly enjoyable read. I just love these shifters and their world. Can’t wait for the next book.
Love Roz and Oliver . So happy to that we got to read how Roz and her sister got turned. Enjoy the back story before the female pack had togo to different packs also found their mate. Wonderful story of love and second chances
Roz is amazing as she finds her footing in this tale. Oliver is as alpha as the rest but he did break down and say "please" to cool his mate's temper. Once. Liza and Bash's beginning is also revealed. Something I realized - Delta's wolves don't have night wolf vision. Really??
These Alpha's sure like spanking. It's so funny to me all the things Roz and Liza got spanked for. Oliver was not going to put up with any disobedience from Roz and she loved to rebel. I can't wait to see what the plot is.
I love these books. Lots of romance and the dialog just flows so smoothly. The characters are very feisty and caring. Don't know how many are left, but I plan to read them all. Maybe more than once.
I’m currently retracing this series. I love the way the author writes. Good flow, well written, all the books interlace well, but just as enjoyable to read as stand alone stories. Great characters with depth to them. Really pleased to have found this author.
Although the first third of the book was a repetition of the start of the previous two, this did little to diminish the excitement, sexiness and smooth writing In this third title of the series. Dare I try just one more? Oh yes, and another and another….
Good action the women were had good attitude, the men was good pain in the butt, and intriguing moments and lots sensual in-depth pleasure throughout this book!!!Great job on this book!!!
This book was fun and exciting. Oliver and Roz are an awesome couple, fierce and loving, wild and sweet. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about shifter romance.
Fascinating story of life in The Hamptons well to do Wolf pack and the Alpha and his Second find their fated mates from two human females that had been turned against their will by others not from the area.
Pillows all Around ( read to see why they are needed).
Love Roz’s storyline ! It continues where the previous 2 stories left off and we find out how Roz and her sister Liza became shifters. Excellent storyline, multifaceted characters and enough hot sex for anyone ! 5✨’s
