Two undercover agents take the greatest risk of their careers—and lives—in these thrilling first two books in Loreth Anne White’s Bellona Channel series!
MELTING THE ICE
Hannah McGuire’s resort-town life had been quiet, happy and safe. Until her best friend was murdered and the investigation forced her into a partnership with Dr. Rex Logan—the man she’d loved, lost and been hiding from for six years.
Rex had put Hannah’s life in danger once before. Now he had to face her again. And this time, to protect her, he was staying close—very close. Working to expose a terrorist who possessed a weapon that could threaten global security, Rex was defenseless in the face of the powerful passion that still simmered between them. But was passion enough? And when Hannah told Rex her own secret—that she’d borne him a son—would she put all their lives in grave danger?
SAFE PASSAGE
Wounded government agent Scott Armstrong hated his newest assignment—baby-sitting scientist Dr. Skye Van Rijn. He missed the excitement of working in the field, his only salvation from the tragedy that haunted his dreams. But the mission turned dangerous when he discovered an evil terrorist was also after the mysterious—and beautiful—doctor.
Skye was a genius at developing biological antidotes to new diseases. Her tender touch and warm body soon began to heal Scott’s battered heart, but the deadly secrets she hid put both their lives at risk, sending them on the run, into the harsh wilderness. As their enemy closed in, Scott was forced to choose between his loyalties to his job—and his passion for the woman who might just be able to save his soul . . .

Two books that compromise the Bellona Channel series that were published in 2003 and 2004 by Harlequin. These are early books, but it should be fun to see how this author started because where she went is fantastic.
MELTING THE ICE - 3 1/2-Stars Good plot, clumsy execution, several plot holes. Some eye rolls, Duh! moments, TSTL heroine times too. Although the romance was hot and the action scenes fantastic, it was not enough to totally redeem the book. Not a great first book, but I can see the beginnings of the brilliant author Loreth Anne White became.
The life Hannah McGuire has made for herself and her son, Daniel, is ideal. They live in a popular, resort town, she has a job as a reporter she loves. Life is good. When the body of Hannah's missing friend, Amy, is discovered everything changes. When Rex Logan reenters her life, her only thought is to protect Danny, the son he doesn't know he has. And to protect her heart.
Dr. Rex Logan is an Agent with Bellona Channel, a private outfit that specializes in fighting bio hazard warfare. He is in White River because there is a toxicology conference that he suspects a few bad actors will attend and he is chasing the Plague Doctor, the one who got away. When he sees Hannah, he can't believe his eyes. He left her in a tent in Africa after a passionate night of love. He left her to protect her. Now, he will protect her by staying close.
SAFE PASSAGE - 3 1/2-Stars Very interesting plot about Eco-terrorism, bioterrorism and its' potential affect on the food supply chain and how terrorists can make a lot of money and wreck a lot of devastation. Romance was a tad forced, but interesting. The imagery evoked is wonderful and haunting. Several reality issues, but overall, I liked it a lot.
Scott Armstrong, an agent for Bellona Creek a nongovernment agency, suffered his knee being blown apart on his last mission. It was a miracle he survived. Now he is assigned "babysitting duty" while he fully recovers. The Babe he is babysitting is the very smart, beautiful and sexy Dr. Skye Van Rijn, the "Bug Doctor". She has awakened feelings Scott thought died with his wife and daughter. Not anything he wants to feel when he has good reason to suspect she is part of an Eco terrorist group.
Skye is working on a way to control the whitefly outbreak in the Canadian agriculture that is making its' way south to the US. But she has never seen this species of whitefly and while she is confident her engineered beetle will take care of it, it needs more testing and her company wants it released ASAP, without proper testing. She is also quite taken with the new, handsome next door neighbor. Feelings she has no business feeling as she is getting married. When she is abandoned at the alter, Scott is there to comfort her. When baddies come after her, Scott it there to protect her.
2 stories / 1 book. These earlier stories (originally published in 2003 & 2004) show the promise of what Ms. White currently writes. I enjoyed reading them but not as much as her recent works.
Ugh. This was basically continuous soft porn with a hardly there plot for both books. So glad she is not writing Harlequin crap any longer. She has come a long way from this thankfully. Even though her basic storylines are the same each book the crimes are interesting and well thought out.
