Fire From the Sky: Book 5: Home Fires Publisher's note: The paperback version of this title is ASIN: 0692193936. Thank you.
“No plan survives contact with the enemy.” An age old idiom that Clay Sanders knows very well. In this case however, it's surviving contact with the people who are supposed to be on his side. Family that can't accept the reality of their new situation, soldiers who follow orders selectively, and 'friends' who essentially sell you down the river.
No one ever said the end of the modern world would be boring or uneventful.
Clay has to deal with betrayals, attitude problems, shifting blame and idealist natures that all threaten to undermine the long months of preparation for the troubling times they now live in. Preparations that cost a fortune and tried to anticipate every need of the small number of people he had planned on living at the Sanders farms, not the growing number of people actually living there thanks to events he can't seem to get control of.
The 'Citizen's committee' is still out there somewhere, there's a nutty 'Reverend' working the airwaves into a frenzy, there are disgruntled members of the community sowing discord and strife, apparent rogue nomadic elements of some kind that are raiding any place that still has food or resources, cannibals that are still active in their area, and because of certain betrayals they now have to step up training of every individual on the farm from the age of sixteen on up just to be able to protect themselves.
Clay just might have had enough of trying to protect a farm full of people that apparently don't want to be protected, even if a lot of them are his own family.
I've read the previous books in this series. Mr. Reed states he is a story teller and not an author. Agree. I really like his stories! I tolerate his lack of editing and knowledge of writing because he is a great story teller. I like the fact he often writes conversation and thought in a realistic way and not worrying about proper language structure. This book had more errors than the others, it was extremely distracting. The first few chapters in I almost quit due to having to go back and re read a paragraph to try to understand it. Thankfully it smoothed out enough to continue. My problem with this book is the preaching has started. Please, please DO NOT start adding opinion and personal political views to the story. The story itself is plenty obvious on your personal politics. I read to escape. Also, this book seemed to make a point and repeat it to death. Show Don't Tell.
This is the first 5 star rating that I have given and thoroughly deserved. Everyone has a personal comfort zone and the author certainly hits mine. I fully agree with the authors self assessment that he is a storyteller as opposed to an author.
A few points. The books are a solid read, not a long essay.
The balance is excellent, not to much fighting or technical jargon.
A good examination of interpersonal relationships with believable characters and their qualities and flaws.
No contrived disasters and a constant litany of deaths and screw ups, they are there but in a way that maintains tension throughout.
This series is one of those rare ones where I put off things that I should be doing so that I can keep reading and curse myself at the same time because I know that when I finish the enjoyment will be over. I read the five books in three days and now I grit my teeth and wait. That will teach me.
|I also highly recommend the Parno series by the same author.
This series of books are completely compelling! You will find yourself engrossed! You will become invested in the sanders family….and extended family…)friends and teammates alike)
I fully recommend all the books in the series. And you are definitely going to want to buy them because you are going to read the entire series over and over again.
agreeing on values to teach children about your culture and tolerance for others is important especially in the trying times . Finding a strength in someone else that can help the group survive should be dine early. great dialog must be difficult to write, but here is expertly done.
WHAT A GREAT BOOK AND SERIES WITH FAMILY VALUES IN THE AFTERMATH OF AN APOCALYPTIC EVENT
Fire From the Sky: Book Five: Home Fires by N.C. Reed is very well written and will keep your interests from the first page to the last in anticipation of what's to come and how a group of family members, friends, loved ones, and a few refugees fro their community band together to survive against the result of a solar flare that brings Earth from the 2000's back to what it was like to be in the late 1800's. This book and the series is full of hardships and challenges around every corner but at the sametime, this group that has banded together to survive not only to take care of themselves but when possible those that have been abused by thugs. N.C. Reed has brought together a well-defined cast of characters, and you will find yourself routing for Clay, his family, friends, and their fellow community now living on Clay's families farm. I have truly enjoyed this book and this series, and I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I hope you will also enjoy it.
I enjoyed this book tremendously I found it entirely enjoyable, this is my first reading a series concerning an EMP, I wanted to read the entire series before I wrote my review, so now that I am up-to-date I found this book great as well as the entire series. And yes I am eagerly awaiting the next book. I love the personal interaction and the dichotomy between the Sanders family and the outside world. You’ll be easily and happily rooting for them to be successful. The only problem I’m having now is that I have to wait for the next book. I urge anyone reading this review to go back and start at the beginning and read the first book you will not be upset that you did and you will not find it a waste of time.
This series never disappoints. No filler books. The characters continue to grow with the world falling apart around them. Cade does an impossible job of protecting his family and friends and anticipating the dangers coming their way. The hardships are written well and infused with new relationships as characters grow and react to the crazy world. Looking forward to the next book, what will Rattler and his team share about the threats in the outside world, and who is the crazy reverend preaching in AM radio. I can hardly wait for the next book in this amazing series!
I'm digging the series so far and find it well reasoned and consistent with human nature. The characters are complex and consistent and the "bad guys" are not just cookie cutter cliches though a few may resemble some tired tropes the bulk are not and the primary focus stays on the folks who are pitched in together.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
There minor editing errors but they don't affect the readability or the narrative.
…even though the beginning chapters were full of a lot of repetition. There was also a significant increase in typos — which I take seriously. Aside from those small issues, the story flowed pretty well and was just as entertaining as the previous ones. I have to say, never have I stayed interested in any series past 5 volumes — authors just have extraordinary difficultly keeping the story/characters/conflict engaging and, well, real. Mr. Reed clearly does, so surprisingly to me, I’m going on to #6. Sincerely,
I read this in one sitting. I loved how the group realized there were not united and worked to pull together. Some of the horrors that some had to go through were hard to think about your that is the reality that people will face in a situation like thus. Looking forward to the next book and meeting the new people. This book is just as good as the first four in the series.
Just finished binge reading all five books in maybe four days, not sure can't figure out the date i got the first one from kindle unlimited. But anyway, have enjoyed these very much. However, if they live so close to an interstate why are they not siphoning fuel from all the abandoned cars and trucks. I would also be checking out any semis one road, who knows whats in them. Can't wait for the next one, got me really curious what was brought.
Mistakes: I think I might have found two. Plot: The social dynamics are very good and strong carrying this series right along. Civilians are coming around nicely, realizing the world is no longer as it was and they need to change their attitude and outlook if they wish to not only survive, but prosper. Characters: I like that some of the characters I've had problems with in last books are changing for the better. 8/10 look forward to book six.
I’ve love each book in this series and with each one the characters are becoming more interesting and the storyline grows more intriguing. Just please don’t leave it cliffhangers those annoy me, it’s where I just stop reading a series to me it’s a form of cheating a person if your series is as good as this one you don’t need cliffhanger to keep your fan base to make me want to keep reading!
What a great book. The time just flew as I found myself sucked in to the story. The characters keep developing as the story progresses forward. Before I knew it, just as another interesting event was going to happen, the book ends:(!! It caught my off guard! Something Clay and his team would have been very unhappy about. Hurry with the next one!
This series keeps getting better and better! It has realistic situations and follows the same thought process as planners do when planning for real world events. I know because i was one of those in the military. Looking forward to the next book after being left with a cliffhanger at the end of this one!
Just discovered this author. Read the first five volumes over a four days. Needless to say I am hooked. Mr. reed spins a great tale. Characters are very well-developed and believable. That said if you’re looking for serious nuts and bolts prepper information this is not the series for you. Highly recommend this series. Looking forward to the next installment.
Definitely one of my favorite current on-going series. I cannot wait for the next book to be published to see what is going to happen next. There is enough action, drama, suspense, love and deceit to satisfy anyone who enjoys this genre and NC Reed is definitely one of the best authors currently publishing in this genre. Keep up the good work.
Take about a cliff hanger... Excellent read! I've read most of this authors books so if you get a chance to, read them all!! None of my usual grammatical beat down as the author has done an exceptional job with proof reading. This is a great series and my only complaint is that the next one isn't ready.
What will I read when this extraordinary series is over? Only one book left after this one. Clay Sanders is the kind of hero I like to read about. Unlike other authors who have one hero who takes 5-6 books to vanquish the same bad guys this series creates new problems constantly. That is realistic.
Amazingly the story has stayed interesting all thru the series. There was however a short referral to church and the bible. Religion always turns me off. With all the problems and heartache God directly sent them how could anyone have any respect for such a vicious creature!
This is a very entertaining book....definitely makes you think about what happens when civilization is no longer civilized! Loved the whole series...looking forward to the next book!
This series is fantastic. It has great characters that you love or hate which is a huge sign of a great writer. I just wish he would get the led out and write faster. I hate waiting for the next book !!!
I need the next book soonest. This one was awesome and I knew in the middle there would be another. This is one of the best series that I follow and I read a LOT! Be sure and pick this series up for a Cole weekend at home in the snow!
I read the first book and immediately bought the rest. It's more than just an action packed doomsday story, it's also a guidebook in case it really happens! Can't wait till the next one comes out!
Looking forward to each release. Not overly gruesome or excessive gun manuals for the ignorant; just right. I reread the series all over again when ever a new edition comes out (5 now). Well worth the cost.
I have read all five books and enjoyed all of them, being prior military I can relate to some of the problems they have. All in all a great series, can't wait till next book comes out.
I am in awe of this series! Well written each book gets better and better. If a CME hit in my lifetime taking everything down not secured I would want to be with someone like Clay Sanders and company. An outstanding series of survival.
