A witch using demon magic? It’s more likely than you think.

My name's Dani Warren and I’m a witch with demon magic. It’s kind of a long story but if anyone finds out, I'll be executed on the spot.

I've been keeping my head down working as a PI, doing the dirty jobs no one else wants. So I don’t think much of it when I’m hired to look into the death of a witch whose body is found next to a dead demon.

But then I’m forced to work with Conor Ramsey, a sexy demon hunter who’s with the Council. He may be pretty to look at, but he won't hesitate to cut me down if he learns my secret.

Then, to really keep me on my toes, groups of demon-powered mages start attacking us. On one hand, we're on the right track. On the other, I can't use my magic to fight back if I don’t want to get caught.

I'm stuck between a smoking hot demon hunter and a pack of dangerous mages. Today really isn’t my day.

Demon Fire is book one of The Brimstone Magic Series. It’s action-packed, suspenseful urban fantasy with elements of humor and romance.

This held my interest in spite of some real drawbacks. The worldbuilding is standard and there's not much originality having a heroine with a deadly secret and a crush/interest who would find that secret off-putting. But I liked Dani's "voice" and her determination to see things through and Conor was a fun foil, too.

The plot mostly worked, though I got tired of the bad guys popping in forever and Dani being prevented from catching up with any of them. It was kind of amazing that she got so many clear shots at them with her magically-sharp sword and only managed to slice a few fingers through the whole book. It was like the bad guys had magic sword-dodging powers all the time. Actually, those action sequences had a lot of magical stuff happening and I don't mean the fireballs. The choreography doesn't work is what I'm saying with people popping in and out of range of things awful conveniently and with good-guy witnesses conveniently unconscious just when Dani needs to use her forbidden power.

And her PI "business" really, really, bugged me. I mean, it's like the author doesn't know anything about how private investigators work and things like "expenses" and insisting on up-front payment seemed like foreign concepts to Dani.

So yeah, it was mainly the character voice that held me engaged. It's remarkably consistent so if you find yourself engaged in the first bit, it's likely the story will hold you throughout. That puts it in three-star land for my own reckoning, but that's a wobbly evaluation and I won't be continuing with the series.

A note about production: There are frequent copy-edit errors. Mostly missing or added words. Though this one stood out because it was funny: "Mr. Upstanding didn’t want to be excused of hiding evidence."

A note about Chaste: If there's a romance, it's one set for a very slow burn. I liked Conor and I think they may turn into a great team if he can learn to see shades of gray. But in this book, there's not even any kissing, so I'll mark it chaste.

I enjoyed it -- this one featured a witch P.I. who 'owns' demon magic after she is being possessed by a demon when she tried to do summoning. The world-built is not very complicated, or offering info dump, probably because it's a familiar setting in the urban fantasy genre: witch, mage, demons, fae, vampires, and shifters.

In this book, Dani Warren is forced to work with a watcher in order to investigate the death of a witch from prominent family, whose body is found next to a dead demon. I think Conor (the Watcher) might be Dani's future love interest? It's pretty straightforward, and has potential :)

Book #2 is coming later this month it seems...

Demon Fire begins when Dani is asked to look into a high profile murder, the problem is there is a Watcher already on the case, and he doesn't seem to want her around. Now, Dani must do what she can to figure it out before it is too late.

This book was really good, and I loved the way the heroine and hero acted. I was a little bit frustrated with certain things, but I can't wait for all the secrets to be revealed. This is a very interesting story with great characters.

Ehhh. The writing was fine, if coming off a little underdeveloped. Dani’s voice was... there but in a way that didn’t really make her stand out. Also, the repetition of her brown hair—whenever she mentioned it—and her sword were kinda annoying. So there’s that.

But it was a quick read and kinda fun and full of magic, so! 3 stars!

I wanted to enjoy this book...new series, new author. I just couldn't do it, though. There was nothing intrinsically wrong with the story or the writing. However, I found myself at 50% without any real interest in the characters or the story; I simply didn't care enough to bother finishing.

Unimpressed

The characters were very hard to get to know or like. I kept reading hoping the story would pick up pace and get interesting. It does not.

Compelling enough to want to read the second one.

The plot and characters were decent, but there were some annoying things. First of all Dani says “heck” way too often. The only adults who say “what the heck?” are adults who have children and don’t want them repeating bad words. Having an adult use immature language is just a personal pet peeve of mine.
What also annoyed me was that Dani claimed she was a skilled swordsmen and could kill, but never actually killed anyone until the end and then had a huge “I’m going to have to process this,” reaction. Seriously, mages and witches are trying to kill her the entire book and she never even manages to catch one. Then at the climax of the story, she knocks them out. What is that? I’m used to badass female characters who aren’t afraid to kill or save themselves.
Also the book ends on a cliffhanger with way too many unanswered questions and threads still unraveled. It would have been nice to clear up SOME of the conflicts from the novel.
Also the grammar of the book, the author switches from past to present tense sometimes, which is another pet peeve of mine.
That being said, I was interested enough to find out what happens next. I just hope Dani grows some lady balls and kills the next person after her. Or at least detains them for questioning.

Demons and witches don't mix.

Terrific read that is fast paced, action packed from start to finish. With a heroine who shoots first (okay they are magical shots, but still...) and asks questions later especially when she faces that take umbrage when cornered. Great lively characters.
Her rent is due and she's broke - again! So even she's offered a job offer find out why a young witch is dead, she takes it. Was the witch involved with raising demons or was he innocent? The only fly in the ointment is that the Council Force of Watchers is also on the case. Witches using demon power to make their magic more powerful are trying to hamper the investigation. What she has kept secret is that a rash action in her youth has meant that she has demon magic inside her. She has to keep this fact hidden as it would mean imprisonment or worse. Can she and the Watchers investigator work together to find out what is going on and can she keep her magic a secret even in dire situations?

I really enjoyed Dani Warren, the lead in Tori Centanni’s Demon Fire (Brimstone Magic, Book 1). Not in is the the sort of kick-a** heroine I adore but I really liked the idea of a witch with demon magic that will get her executed if known but who is working with a demon hunter on a murder case where demon-powered mages end up being after them. Quite a quandary she’s in. How she handles that - and handles the demon hunter, Conor Ramsey, who of courses is a yummy sexy specimen, makes for a truly fun tale. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the Brimstone Magic series.

Nancy Drew at Hogwarts

I was speechless when I finished this book. The ending isn’t necessarily a cliffhanger. I mean it’s one of the job’s hazards, but that was pretty close to one. Regardless of the ending though, the story and heroine themselves would want you to pick up the next book. This first installment is definitely a quick and smooth read. The events flowed very nicely from one after another.

Dani has spunk, sass and fire ( no pun intended). She’s relatable with her flaws and insecurities. Connor, jury is still up on him. Not sure how to take his black and white outlook on things in general. Would have been nice to read more about his suspicions on Dani though and see what happens. I like Penelope. I wish there was more of her in the story. She’s just what Dani needs in her life. Even though sometimes it’s questionable.

good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This is about 3/5 on the trauma scale, and is in the nature of a book-hook style cliffhanger: one case finished, and a new one starts!

Dani Warren is a witch P.I. with the unusual (and illegal) ability to wield demon magic.
When she is hired to discover the circumstances behind the death of the son of an important witch, she finds herself working alongside a watcher, one of the official paranormal police investigators.
Dani cannot use her demon magic, but it might just be the one thing that can save her when she finds herself under attack…

This is the first in series, and introduces us to a most unusual witch. While Dani’s demonic abilities are innocent, but those she comes up against are far from it.
It’s an enjoyable, and quick read, and urban fantasy as well as paranormal mystery fans will enjoy the tale.

I’ve never read this author before, but I will be sure to again after reading this book. This series starter has an interesting plot, and I really like the characters. One thing I will admit, though, is at times I found Conor a little too rigid about his feelings of witches who have dabbled in demon magic. Not enough to turn me off of him, but I wonder where such feelings came from. We’ll probably find out. I did enjoy this book from start to finish, even though it took me a little bit to settle in at the beginning. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you like light urban fantasy, give this book a try. Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.

not going to write a review for all books, but book 4 is certainly the best out of all.
i love this series with my whole being and have read it 1000 times istg.
read on my kindle when i was a kid, bought the physical copies like 4 years ago, and have loved them since...
so so so so good, even though it's very basic world-building/fantasy work.
these are easy enjoyable reads, where the MFC is strong, AND DOESN'T NEED THE MMC TO SAVE HER.

Dani is a very intriguing character with a lot of secrets she is trying to keep while surviving all the danger in her life. I enjoyed the storyline which has a lot of action and surprises. You are not quite sure what to expect next. The connection with Connor is going to be interesting to watch.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

Enjoyable read

4.5 star rating.
This was an interesting storyline as well as captivating. The heroine was likeable. Still not sure on the hero Conor just yet. Well at least I believe he will be the main hero in the series.
It'll be interesting to see how the author spins the installments.

Dani Warren is a strong female character, and most of the time, a consistently one.
It is an adventure book, with supernatural going crazy around.
Her life is awfully complicated and miserable some times. I think she could do with a little romance, but the author thinks differently.
But overall it is a good book.

A promising start with room to grow

I read this book after reading a short story set in this world. While I enjoyed the short story more than the novel, this had a promising start and I look forward to trying the next book.

Great series, great for lovers of Alice Worth and other paranormal fantasies with some romance that is not the main thing. The writing is a bit clunky and the repetitive descriptions are a bit annoying but it is a great series and improves.

Wow unbelievable. Dani is a witch with Demon Magic. She tries to keep a low profile as a PI or she’d be in big trouble. Loved it and can’t wait for more.

Great story

I think one of the reasons I liked this book so much is the way Dani has to hide what she is but still manages to do the right thing.

I admit it, I love me some self depreciation despite Dani's incredible strengths. A great read to slip into with lots of supernatural action.

I just finished the first three books in the series and have enjoyed them. These are shorter books at around 200 pages so they don’t have a lot of secondary plot but I’m liking the world and the characters.

Interesting story was pretty good. Got a little redundant with release references to why it was had to use especially in front of a Watcher.
