When we talk about beings like Ganesha And Shiva we tend to personify them into human forms for our understanding. The sages who devised the lore, so that comon people could understand, knew this intrinsic value of personification and hence spoke to the people about these entities as if they were humans just like them, albeit a little more ‘super’. Humanity has always wanted the break the shackles that the body puts on it. And the stories of these super human beings doing such awesome stuff is endearing to say the least. There are so many stories about the way Ganapati was born. Most try to satisfy the human need to putting things in brackets. There is nothing wrong about that tendency because that very tendency (bracketing) among humans have helped us evolve to where we stand today. As soon as the child is born it starts labelling things. Categorising things according to need. According to likes and dislikes. And that doesn't stop till the life so to speak leaves the body. It may as well continue after the last breath leaves the body. The story of Ganapati is to be understood in layers. For children it might be sufficient that Parvati wanted to have a shower and did not want to be disturbed so she stationed Ganpati and when Shiva arrived he was not allowed to enter and so he cut the boys head. Parvati came out and gave Shiva an earful and so Shiva restored his head with that of an elephant. Because his real head could not be found and the first head they could find was that of an elephant. To a young mind this narrative works, but to a mature mind it seems unreasonable. When we see the story from an esoteric angle and blend it with what little modern science tells us, the story evolves into another being all together. It becomes a story of creation. Ganapati is considered the god of Moolaadhara, the lowest of the Chakras. It also corresponds with the lowest plane of existence. That of physicality. Parvati is considered Shakti, the universal energy. And Shiva is the contemplator, the mendicant, the destroyer. Only by contemplating deeply about the character of the universe can one destroy the boundaries that matter and energy puts out. And there is no ill intent in putting those boundaries. The boundaries are put for the smooth functioning of the matter that is to be created. Hence Tattvas have a pattern that needs to be followed. Aakash comes first. The sky. The universe. The field where the play can take place. Then Vayu follows, the force, commonly understood/misunderstood as wind. With the application of force the next Tattva comes into play. Tejas or Agni. The element of fire. The Big-Bang of modern science may-be. Then when the elements that are spewed out start coming together and fusing, the next Tattva comes into play. That of Apas or Jala. Water, as it is commonly understood. But water is just pertaining to life on earth, the bigger picture of this tattva is all elements that form when atoms fuse together. And then when these elements start to fuse together in complex patterns, they form matter as we know it. That is when the fifth tattva comes into existence. That which is called Prithvi, or earth. Prithvi pertains to all the physical forms and not just the earth we live on. And that is how Shakti transforms from intangible to tangible.
