Absolute Swamp Thing by Alan Moore

Absolute Swamp Thing by Alan Moore Vol. 1

Rate this book
Before the groundbreaking graphic novel Watchmen, Alan Moore made his debut in the U.S. comic book market with the revitalization of the horror comic book Swamp Thing. Moore's classic, critically acclaimed Swamp Thing stories are now collected in a slipcased hardcover edition with brand-new coloring in Absolute Swamp Thing by Alan Moore Vol. 1.

In 1983, a revolutionary English writer joined a trio of trailblazing American artists to revitalize a longstanding comic book icon. By the time they'd finished their work four years later, SWAMP THING by Alan Moore, Stephen R, Bissette, John Totleben, and Rick Veitch was universally recognized as one of the handful of titles that defined a new era of complexity and depth in modern graphic storytelling, and their run on the series remains one of the medium's most enduring masterpieces.

Now DC Comics and Vertigo are proud to present an all-new vision of this landmark achievement. Comprising three deluxe hardcover volumes, ABSOLUTE SWAMP THING BY ALAN MOORE debuts completely new coloring for every page, crafted exclusively for this definitive collector's edition by legendary color artist Steve Oliff (Akira, Miracleman). This first volume includes the issues THE SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING #20-34 and SWAMP THING ANNUAL #2 and features a monumental new afterword from Bissette accompanied by a wealth of historic behind-the-scenes material from the title's original creative team.

Hellblazer, Lucifer, The Book of Magic,

Swamp Thing però arriva in scivolata.

Buddy read with Chad. That guy who reads shitty comics so you don’t have to.

This was pretty cool. Definitely different than any other comic I’ve read from the big 2, DC or Marvel. This book had a real regal feel to it as you could tell Alan Moore put a lot of care and time into this book. Definitely a great book to read for October as the antagonists Swamp Things deals with in here are creepy and vile. There is a sense of sadness also with some of the things Swampy goes through. Like discovering what he actual is and putting his old body to rest. You have another plant type guy who tried to turn the worlds plants against the people. You have Etrigan and the little white fear monkey. Another horror type story that was pretty good. Then you have Arcane coming back to life and bringing back a bunch of crazed killers to reek havoc on the town and get revenge on ol Swampy. That was probably my favorite yarn as it led to the annual with Swamp Thing finding a way down below to try and recover Abby’s soul. Some cool appearances by some other characters that I haven’t read much of like The Spectre for instance. The Pog story or issue #32 was my least favorite. But the artwork was really cool. A nice old school style that worked great for the horror themes and creatures that appeared through this book. Looking forward to vol 2.

This is as good as it gets for me, I did read this on the tail end of my Vertigo reading list which made me appreciate it even more. I knew before going in that this run spawned the publishing offspring Vertigo into being and man, what a start... its an incredible crafted story and even tho they label it horror I just feel that its so much more. While there are horror elements in it its a highly philosophical journey with so many unexpected cameos (which is another reason you should read some other material of vertigo first) that it fullfilled all the expectations I had and then some.

Yes it is true, what Alan Moore did here revolutioniced comics for decades to come. I don't want to analyse it and also don't want to give anything away about the story. Just go and read it if you haven't!

Finished this today since I was told not to come in to work due to over-scheduling (no complaints from me, I don’t wanna be in the pharmacy on the day before a holiday lol). The art was incredible and the stories were great. Sometimes Alan Moore is too “out there” even for me, but this was right up my alley. I kinda want to do my hair like Abigail once I grow it out some more. Would highly recommend this edition, it’s stunning and the contents are great!

This to me is Alan Moore's best work, which is saying a lot.

Through this entire volume we get to catch up on who Swamp Thing is. Which is crazy cause it does continue the last run but it does it in a way to catch you up with the key players so quick and flawlessly really. But the real highlight is the evolution of Swamp Thing and what he becomes here.

The truth behind Swamp thing and what he really is changes the entire character in a positive way that also enhances every run after this one. Moore decides to take a big swing on the reason and origin basically of Swampy and it pays off. On top of that some excellent storytelling overall dealing with identity, leaving behind the past, family ties, and even sex. I would go as far to say this book was ahead of its time and still reads today so well, as if it never aged.

A 5 out of 5.

The first issue is probably the worst one in the series. Because the series existed as a monthly comic and when Alan Moore started writing it he needed to wrap up the previous stories. That makes the first issue very jarring, just chatting about all these characters I know nothing about! But once he gets started on his own story it gets very good very quickly.

I never noticed before how similar the first story arc about the villain Dr. Jason Woodrue is to the villain in Moore's Miracleman series. It's a very similar creative team, and they even replicate a splash page of the villain in the forefront and a a city in ruins in the background. I always enjoy reading an author and seeing similar ideas get played out - noticing the changes and enhancements, like he's got this idea and keeps trying to perfect it. Moore is great at making Woodrue a truly horrific villain while still (somehow) obeying the Comic Code that was still in place early in his run.

This book lacks a strong narrative arc.

This is my first read through and I have mixed feelings so far. The book starts off very slowly and reads like a combination of poetry and prose, placed around artwork.
This and the fact these were released as issues and not a complete graphic novel, means a lot of unnecessary recaps and descriptions of things that are already known or shown in the artwork.
I enjoyed the more comic like moments where other characters crossed in most as they had the least narration an actually felt like things were happening rather than being told.
The book is built very well and the artwork is mostly great with a few duds here and there.
I look forward to seeing how vol2 goes.

This book is gorgeous!

I know everyone and their mom has read this series by now so I'm going to talk about why you should buy the "Absolute" hardcover edition. Its simple, its a freakin cool book. Not only is it a oversized hardcover, the texture is a beautiful mossy green velvet with light green metallic foil pressed on for the script. The sleeve it slips into is really pretty and the spine alone gives me the chills with how cool it is. It literally has swamp thing looking back at you. The inside is as good as the outside is. They printed the series on gloss paper so the colors are super vibrant compared to the old newspaper pages. With that and it being oversized, I feel like I got sucked into the pages. The intro to this book blew me away and I'm glad I waited to read this series, this is a great edition for a first timer. It is a little expensive and it has a twin (second volume) but if you ever wished to experience this series for the first time again, now is your chance.

Before there was WATCHMEN, V FOR VENDETTA and FROM HELL, a relatively new writer, Alan Moore, got carte blanche to reinvent an obscure monster comic called Swamp Thing. In the beginning of the 70s it was made popular with writers like David Michelinie, Gerry Conway and Len Wein who created the character. After that first run it was back to obscurity, until the end of the 70s when DC wanted to revive the character, but they had to wait because of the infamous DC Implosion (short version, almost 20 titles got cancelled because of bad sales). Fast forward to 1982, now called Saga of the Swamp Thing, writer Martin Pasko tried to give the series new momentum, eventually Pasko moved on to work more for television, making room for Alan Moore. He was 30 years old and got his first try at an American comic.

He took over with issue 20, an issue that earlier collected editions took out. It's a weird beginning to Moore's run but he had to finish a lot of loose ends, boldly even naming the story Loose Ends. Swiftly killing most of the supporting cast and also its main character Swamp Thing, making a fresh start for the title and knocking it out of the park from day one. He took a formulaic monster comic, and turned it into a more poetic one, addressing environmental issues and social issues, while also honoring its horror and fantasy roots. He uses some lesser known supernatural characters from DCs massive roster like The Spectre, The Phantom Stranger and Jack Kirby's Etrigan the Demon. But most famous of all, introducing John Constantine.
Another important thing that they did on their classic run was to abandon the Comics Code Authority, something that happened only once before with Stan Lee's Spider-Man. Moore, Bissetre and Totleben were vetted by the Authority Code and decided to not submit the book, and even threatened to quit if they had to change stuff again and again, beginning a trend for more adult comics and paving the way for others. I think that this book made DC great again and led them to make a ballsy imprint like Vertigo Comics shortly after. It also paved the way for a lot of english writers, like Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison to make the jump to American comics, often referred to as the “British Invasion”.

This classic run is finally collected in a fantastic Absolute Edition for the first time, with an embossed cover giving it a swampy/mossy feel. With a beautiful slipcover, great binding and oversized artwork, this is a must for the graphic novel nuts out there. A thing that I want to mention as well is the recoloring, something a lot of people are not a fan of, but I don't mind one bit in this collection. The original coloring is completely gone and redone by Steve Oliff who recolored great comics like Akira and Walt Simonson's Thor, giving this book a more modern feel to it and also making it a feast for the eye for a new generation. Also included in this Absolute, some sketch work, Moore's original script and an extensive afterword from Stephen R. Bissette. This is just an all round great book, and a big part of the revolutionizing of the graphic novel medium.

What can you say about Alan Moore that hasn’t been said? This is a timeless supernatural horror story, yet its psychedelic mysticism, humor and love give it hope. The artwork is next-level in its beauty and intricacy—insert “frame or tattoo this artwork comment” here.

Well here it is, the famed Swamp Thing run by Alan Moore. A legendary achievement in comics. One that is still as relevant and as interesting today as it was decades ago when it started. These stories are essential reading if you are a fan of this medium. They started the British Invasion movement and legitimised British writers in the eyes of American readers. For all the acclaim this run has and all it’s celebrated glory, does it truly live up to its hype? Of course it does.

When Alan Moore took this book over from Len Wein, he had a completely different vision of what Swamp Thing was. He had his own ideas on what happened to Alec Holland to turn him into the titular character. And they were amazing. If you’ve read any of my reviews, you know that I can’t stand what I’d call the: reactive meta story. Which is when a new writer comes in with their own ideas, retcons everything that made the character unique and interesting, and turns them into their own mouthpiece. I don’t like these stories because they often breed more reactive stories justifying the prior writer’s horrible changes. It becomes a cyclical feedback loop that never ends. Alan Moore on Swamp Thing does not fall into this trap. He expands upon a, quite frankly, boring origin story and gives it depth. SPOILERS: he says that Alec Holland died in the origin of Swamp Thing and that swamp thing is actually a plant that thinks it’s human. It’s brilliant. It’s one of the best comic stories I’ve ever read. It works so well because Alan Moore, for whatever reason, writes characters who struggle with their own humanity and identifying with the people they’re supposed to protect. Case in point: Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen. These characters are filled with so much mystique and wonder that it never gets old to ponder the philosophic struggle they enter into by just living their daily lives. Alan Moore found dirt and turned it into gold. Or in this case, he turned it to green. Not many writers have the ability to do this successfully with characters they didn’t create. But Alan Moore made it look easy. And most importantly he made it more interesting.

There was so much that happened in this trade but I don’t want this review to be too long so I’ll try and keep it brief. After this initial origin retcon story to kick off Moore’s Swamp Thing run, there’s a few clankers. I didn’t like the autistic kids storyline. I thought it was silly but I liked what it foreshadowed with the Arcane return. There were a few stories and issues that had pointless cameos. Like in one issue the Justice League show up, say about two lines of dialogue and peace out. It’s very pointless. I speculate that it would not have been Alan Moore’s idea to have these characters and cameos in them. I would say it was likely DC being scared to let Swamp Thing stand on his own as a character. Probably for fear that he wouldn’t be able to sell as many issues without the cameo. So I would tend to put more of the blame on them. But I can’t say for sure why they’re there, I can just say it adds absolutely nothing to the story. Outside of a few awkward cameos and one average story this trade was flawless. Moore spent a lot of time developing the characters who mattered, he foreshadowed interesting stuff, and made sure to write to where the strength of the series was. (Within the philosophical realms of what Swamp Thing feels). I would be remiss to mention that psychedelics also would have played a massive part in writing this based on the immaculate visuals and experiences Swamp Thing has. And that the art is amazing, it perfectly complements the elements of the stories.

This truly is one of the best comics ever made and this is the main reason why Swamp Thing is still a known name today. If you are a fan of comics you are doing yourself a massive disservice in not reading this.

I

I've got a soft spot in my heart for Swamp Thing. My brother and I rapaciously watched the movies and TV series as kids, and we collected all of the figures from the short-lived animated series. I read some reprints of a few of the seminal issues over the years, and I read the entirety of the New 52 run in real time, along with the various one-offs and miniseries since then, but I'd never gotten to experience complete arcs of the series when it was in the hands of Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben. Well my girlfriend got me this collection for my birthday last week, and it is a transcendent experience.

Upon sliding the massive tome out of its slipcase, I was delighted to discover an unexpectedly mossy feel to the cover. And it just kept getting better. This book is absolutely gorgeous. Moore's writing is a breathtaking and heart wrenching masterpiece. Couple that with the lush, mind-bending artwork by Bissette, Totleben, and a handful of fill-in artists, and Absolute Swamp Thing vol 1 is an absolute feast of horror and wonder for the eyes and soul.

I've already reached out to the folk at my local comic shop for assistance in acquiring vol 2, and I cannot wait.

As if 380 pages of rich, captivating and gloriously vivid panels and colouring weren’t enough, Alan Moore serves up wave after wave of sophisticated ideas and quite brilliant prose that breathe all kinds of life into an otherwise uninspiring DC character.

This stunning edition collects THE SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING issues #20-34 including an annual and an epic afterword. Some of the issues in here are easily amongst the most memorable I’ve ever read. And I’ve read allooooot of comics. Moore leans heavily into the horror genre throughout and even drags you through hell in one issue, but the grandmaster is also concerned with exploring far weightier themes while he unravels twist after turn. There’s just so much to love about this book and for £60, you really get your money’s worth!

I’ve spent the past 3 days pouring over these pages and have gone back and read numerous issues just to gawk at how accomplished Moore was even before books like Watchmen and Killing Joke. Unforgettable.

I wonder why I didn't read this sooner and I found myself waiting to get an edition that is worthy and finally, this is it. Swamp Thing, being written by Alan Moore is a great read in so many levels. He makes you care about the characters. He makes you understand what Earth is going through. He makes you understand that horror is very important in our lives and the impact of horror to this day, can be not just scary, its needed. Swamp Thing was the beginning for Alan Moore writing for DC Comics in 1983 and its an important beginning where writing stories are important as the art itself. This edition, although the pages are recolored, is an absolute collector's gain. There is not much I can say more about this edition and only I can say - it's highly recommended read!

I cannot put into words the beauty this book provides. The re-coloring was personally not an issue for me but do yourself a favor and get some medium of this book whether it's paperback or hardcover.
