One billion dollars. An ex-cop with nothing to lose. A reporter working a single lead. They stand together or die alone.
The Finch Trilogy fuses the unrelenting tension of Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy with the frenzy of "24".
“The author is a great talent, and the story and characters are compelling.” — Aaron C. Brown, Amazon Top 1000 Reviewer

Dear Reader,
If you're like me then you love reading novels by Michael Connelly, Lynda LaPlante, Jeffery Deaver, John Sandford, Philip Kerr, Martin Cruz Smith, Patricia Highsmith, Stieg Larsson, Elmore Leonard, and Jo Nesbo. Among many others.
And if you like those writers, then I invite you to have a look at my crime series. You can buy them all on Amazon, or pick up a free novel on my website, dfbailey.com.
Writing crime fiction isn't always easy, but it's always a thrill. When you read my novels I hope you'll share the buzz, the excitement and the adrenaline rush with me.
Like all writers, I love readers who enjoy my books, especially those who are kind enough to leave a review. Hopefully, you will, too.
D.F. Bailey is a W.H. Smith First Novel Award and a Whistler Independent Book Award finalist.
His first novel, Fire Eyes was optioned for film. His second novel, Healing the Dead, was translated into German as Todliche Ahnungen. The Good Lie, another psychological thriller, was recorded as a talking book. A fourth novel, Exit from America, made its debut as an e-book in 2013.
In 2015 D.F. Bailey published The Finch Trilogy — Bone Maker, Stone Eater, and Lone Hunter — novels narrated from the point-of-view of a crime reporter in San Francisco. He is now extending the trilogy in a series of stand-alone novels.
Following his birth in Montreal, D.F. Bailey's family moved around North America from rural Ontario to New York City to McComb, Mississippi to Cape May, New Jersey. He finally "landed on his feet" on Vancouver Island — where he lives next to the Salish Sea in the city of Victoria.
For twenty-two years D.F. Bailey worked at the University of Victoria where he taught creative writing and journalism and coordinated the Professional Writing Cooperative Education Program — which he co-founded. From time to time he also freelanced as a business writer and journalist. In the fall of 2010 he left the university so that he could turn "his pre-occupation with writing into a full-blown obsession."

I loved the first book. And the bizarre crime scene. Book 2 was okay, 3 stars I wasn’t a fan of the abuse. Book 3 was better than book 2 but not as good as book 1.
EReaderNews #1 - Bone Maker - I received a complimentary copy of this first in a Will Finch Mystery Thriller series tale from TheFussyLibrarian and the author, D. F. Bailey. I have also read the prequel to this novel, The Bank Investigator, which sets us up for the series. This prequel was gifted by the author. This series was started in 2015, but has stories added as recently as 2022.
Bone Maker is a fast-paced D.F. Bailey series you will not want to miss. In 'Bone Maker' we follow Will Finch, San Francisco, California reporter for a daily newspaper, internet edition. Will has been out for several weeks following an overwhelming personal tragedy and needs to get back to work to bring himself back to the present. But maybe this case is too over the top? Hard to tell. In any case, it's his, so he heads out in the staff car to Astoria, Oregon, a 12-hour drive to the site of a probable death-by-bear attack in a small town with an overpowering police force that keeps Astoria's citizens in line and subdued by threats, lies, and blackmail. California reporters are not an exception - Will is not provided much information via the popo and what he is finding on his own seems to have nothing to do with the information the police are releasing to the news media.
The mystery is well concealed, I thoroughly enjoyed 'visiting' Astoria and the surrounding countryside and sea, and I especially liked seeing into the mind of Will Finch. This is a series I'm going to binge.
I just completed the last story in this set and all of them are excellent. The titles of each book correspond to a main character that plays a large role and interacts with Will.
The books a really a serial which can be read individually, but really continue on to the next story.
The 1st story has Will going to Oregon to look into the death of Ray Toeplitz a key witness in a trial that his company was following. During his visit, he met Gianna a Whitelaw daughter and who was Toeplitz's girlfriend. In the 2nd book he meets Eve Noon a friend of Gianna's who wants Will to look into Gianna's death. In the 3rd book it follows Fiona's disappearance which was hinted at in the ending of book 2.
All of the stories involve the Whitelaw family which was the subject of the trial where this all began. The family was involved with a financial scheme and Alexei Malinin who had the title "Lone Hunter" played a role.
To really get a handle on what the interaction is all about and what role "Sochi" plays, then you must get this trilogy which I highly recommend.
STONE EATER Giana doing a little break in, getting items for Eva, when met with an intruder, The news now list her as a suicide. Eva and Will don’t believe it. This continues with the conspiracy of the Whitelaw family. We learn more about Will he is a private investigator, who seems to find trouble where every he goes. This plot was full of tension I liked Eva and Will as they worked together. A bit of a cliff hanger to led you into the next book LONE HUNTER Begin at the first book to get the most out of this series, and to know the characters. In this we have spies from the 80’s, and Fiona has been kidnapped. For Will and Eve they are still struggling with the tragedies, and hoping it will bring them closer together. The plot flows, the author has a way of weaving a story that you hope he will add to it someday His stories are good, interesting and keep you reading to the end.
I really enjoyed reading this three books. Reporter/crime investigator Will Finch was looking for a major history in order to be the top reporter and boy - he found it! As you read each book the mystery starts to unravel and more complications arise. It´s a very good plot with lots of twists and turns that keeps you hoping that Will and the team that helps him will succeed. The characters are very relatable and the story seems very real - unfortunately! This trilogy makes great reading as it is action packed and gives us a view how the on line papers have to work. Highly recommended.
This is my first "read" withMr. Bailey. After reading all three books, I can say that we have a main character who is an emotionaly wounded man. He meets a string of women, all of whom are attracted to him. In each book, he also meets a new string of characters who want to kill him after meeting him just once! Amazing! The important thing to me is that I didn't get tired of reading before getting to the last page. The last page of the last book suggests that the character lives on in more books. That's OK with me!
I have become a big fan of Mr. Bailey's writing, and his character Will Finch. There is a lot of back story that plays out into who Finch is, and it was fun discovering this as the story unfolded. The secondary characters that revolve around Finch and the story are also well written, and will have you either rooting for or against them. The plot line has a very here and now feel to it, with the technology aspect involved. This trilogy was a lot of fun to read and I highly recommend it.
Who has a Will, a Willie and a Wally introduced in one chapter?
At first glance, I thought I'd like the premise of this book- jaded journalist returns from a personal tragedy to an internet newsroom and tries to pick up the pieces of his life- but it soon just devolved into too many characters and very little introduction to the importance of any of them. The editing was poor and I knew this was not the book for me when the main character " nodded no."
These three stories will pull you in. Will in a person you will want to know, and the author reveals him, almost like peeling an onion - a little bit at a time. That works well because you see how the pieces fit into this story. It really is a single story, but split into three very nice pieces.
Grab this trilogy from an exciting mystery trip with diversions and related mysteries pulled in to fill out the complete story.
I enjoyed how this complex story wove itself into adventure, mystery, romance, and drama with conspiracy, disabilities, wealthy, poor, and middle class well sussed out characters. There's intrigue and so much more. It starts with a bear mauling and travels from San Francisco, CA to Hawaii, and D.C., and ends back in San Francisco. There are Russians, politicians, reporters, police and exe police, murder, betrayal, and it is all about money, power, and love.
Will finch Internet news man always looked for the truth sometimes truth has consequences as in this story. There is heartbreak danger and love. The horror started when two hunters see a bear eating a human then the story spirals so many dead all for greed. This is a fast moving story and Will meeting Eve brings new meaning of life for Will along with the danger just to get the storyline right. Recommend read
Word one stars you off on a very realistic story of greed, wealth and determination to have it all all costs. Will, the reporter assigned to a man apparently killed by a bear, to a controlling wealthy family, nor murders and mayhem. I read until 2 AM because I had to know how it ended.
Intense, fast paced, and emotion filled. Great characters and story lines. Quite unique subjects. A reporter and a private detective make an interesting duo. Wasn't crazy about the endings of each due to the cliffhangers..like a soap opera continues. It does grab you attention though.
This trilogy from D. F. Bailey will leave you wanting more. I've already purchased the next book. Will is a reporter for an online "paper". His escapades often put his life and those close to him in danger. You'll be rooting for his success.
Will Finch is a washed out journalist trying to get back into the game. His first assignment seems a breeze until the informant for offense is murdered. The first two books I could not put down. I gave a 4 star rating because the last book it took a little longer to get interested.
This is a brilliant read! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author.
This book was fantastic from the very first word to the last the ease of the storytelling was excellent. The author allows the reader to take the characters and understand their thought processes and then have the ability to turn them into real life scenarios
I found these 3 stories hard to put down as they were a continuation of what seemed like a tragic killing by a bear and ending up with bitcoin plans to replace money as we know it.
Couldn't put this Trilogy down. Well-developed characters, plot surprise . Loved every minute. Get started as soon as you can! 3 more books to go. And oh how I hope for more.
Three very good books that I read in two days. I would have given them five stars except for the proofreading errors. If I’d have been the final proofer they would have been flawless!
Bailey has Will Finch the character honed. Everything about this was noteworthy. I read this trilogy in 3 days. Master Author. These stories flow together so smoothly. Loved everything about this series
These three books made a great read. Neither tradition detective stories or normal crime thrillers, they track the adventures of a news reporter, including this love life. Worth the time to read
The first story, "Bone Marker" was a definite 4 stars. The second story "Stone Eater" was 3 and a half stars. The third story "Lone Hunter" was 3. stars. Overall 3 stars. Liked the characters.
The twists and turns keep you up, to see what on earth could happen next. It’s always something you could not predict. Interesting characters are well developed and the story told well. Of interest to only me, no typos!!
I love the story and they way that the main characters find love with each other. It's a real page turner! Great plot twists and makes you not want to put it down.
The 3 books are very inter-twined. Some parts of the storyline arre very explanatory (the whole bit coin thing) but I wish the backstory of Wills wife dying and son dying were more explained.a very mode rn and up go date story.
