LIFE WITH ARCHIE VOL. 1 is the first of a chronological collection of titles featuring the classic series. This is presented in the new higher-end format of Archie Comics Presents, which offers 200+ pages at a value while taking a design cue from successful all-ages graphic novels.
The original Life with Archie series was home to the wildest alternate reality takes on the Riverdale gang. From spies to superheroes, this comic showcased stories readers never dreamed of! Relive those far-out tales in the first volume of this collection.
THE ARCHIE SUPERSTARS are the impressive line-up of talented writers and artists who have brought Archie, his friends and his world to life for more than 70 years, from legends such as Dan DeCarlo, Frank Doyle, Harry Lucey, and Bob Montana to recent greats like Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz, and many more!
Visual Content: 3 stars!!! There's this one story in pages 18 to 40 that the drawings are darker than the other pages, which are lighter and brighter in tone.
Story: 4 stars!!! This is a collection of 16 stories that are originally published in 1958 to 1965. Funniest of all, that I found myself laughing alone, is found on page 197. The title is Plane & Fancy and the story revolves around an auction event hosted by Veronica's dad, Mr. Lodge. Archie and Jughead visited and won the bid surprisingly.
Life with Archie collects various stories from Life with Archie from 1958-1965.
Archie sent me this as a freebie once the Coronavirus delayed the Archie Meets Flash Gordon crossover I ordered from them. Shut up, I'm an adult.
Life with Archie traditionally was host to long form Archie titles and frequently incorporated science fiction and fantasy in addition to the usual Archie hijinks. For instance, in this volume, Archie winds up in Atlantis, gets shrunk to less than an inch high, and is in a Tarzan scenario with Veronica as Jane.
I'm a Dan DeCarlo guy from way back so most of this collection didn't set off fireworks for me. DeCarlo did the Tarpan story and that was it. The rest was Bob White and a few other artists, good but not precisely what I was looking for. Three out of five stars.
It's a fun collection, but it doesn't really deliver what is promised. It says that the Life with Archie title was the home to "alternate reality" stories, but we don't get much of that. To be honest, that was the reason I picked up the book. I thought it was going to be similar to DC "imaginary tales" stories. It still has some fun stories, but just not in the way I was hoping.
The stories here are mostly right in line with, or just few steps beyond, the more down to earth teenage romance and comedy that older Archie comics are known for. A few of them do go much further into weird adventure territory, which I was hoping for more of. Perhaps I'm underselling it, though. Because, even the least of these comics is a welcome amusement.
I find pretty much any classic Archie comic to be deeply comforting thanks to the predictability of its tropes and, generally, artwork. But what makes these Life with Archie stories especially fun is that they provide slightly more extreme variations on those tropes - crime adventures, surreal fantasies, longer-form capers, etc. Ridiculous fun.
