About the author

Gyalwa Lochen Sonam Gyatso (Tibetan: བསོད་ནམས་རྒྱ་མཚོ་, Wylie: bsod nams rgya mtsho, ZYPY: Soinam Gyaco) (1543–1588) was a monk of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism who became abbot of Sera Monastery and was later made Dalai Lama by the Mongol ruler Altan Khan. As his predecessors—starting from Gendun Drub—were named Dalai Lamas posthumously, Sonam Gyatso is styled as the 3rd Dalai Lama even though he was the first to bear this title while living.
