This book was an Amazon recommendation. The title caught my eye at the first instant and could not resist from ordering it. Partition has been my favourite topic. The word ‘partition’ is itself brutal. The year 1947 is turning point in history of Punjab. This book is written by Chandra Chatterjee who is director of Centre for Guru Nanak Dev studies at Vishwa Bharati University Santiniketan, West Bengal. It is extensively researched and is based on sources from all four interested parties; Sikhs, Congress,Muslim league and Britishers. It has nine chapters which deal with wide range of topics like efforts of early Sikhs to crystallise Sikh identity by forming Singh Sabhas with the help of Britishers, politics of Punjab and role of unionist party which held power until before partition, growth of influence of Muslim league in Punjab and insecurity among Sikhs. It provides details of various factions in Shiromani Akali Dal and and role of communists in helping Muslim league which are both very relevant in present situation of Punjab. The book summaries strange situation of Sikhs being sandwiched between oppressive Muslim league and dubious Congress. Overall, the book is very informative, thoroughly researched and recommended for those interested in history of Punjab.
