A mother's ultimate sacrifice... A brother's dark obsession... And one woman's desperate fight for survival...

Something dark and dangerous had long shadowed Skye Dearborn's life. She had seen the fear of it in her mother's eyes. It was there, locked in her memories of blood spilling across a gleaming floor. In the sound of her own screams. And in the terror she'd felt the night her mother disappeared. Then fortune smiled on Skye. With help she was able to put the horror behind her and look to the future.

But now that same fortune is leading her into the arms of danger--and back into the nightmare of her past. For the evil that has haunted her dreams has a human form--a man obsessed with Skye since her birth. A man who alone knows who Skye Dearborn really is.

Fortune by Erica Spindler was originally published in 1997 by MIRA.
Well, this was one wild ride. Fortune was a really different take on the romantic suspense novel.
Madeleine/Claire leaves her wealthy husband and his strange family and takes her young daughter Grace/ Skye with her.
They must go into hiding , so they travel a lot and end up working in a traveling carnival .
Chance lost his parents and is taken in by his Amish uncle . But, that is not the life for him. When a traveling carnival pulls into to town, Chance joins them.
This is when Chance meets Claire and Skye. It doesn't take long to figure out Claire is on the run and afraid .
When her luck runs out, she does the only thing she can to save Skye- she leaves her with Chance.
Over time Claire, a woman with a sixth sense, uses her ability to help others ,while she searches for her daughter.
But, Chance and Skye go through many changes as they both grow up .
What Skye doesn't know is that she is in terrible danger. Her father's demented family and her twisted step brother have never given up their quest to find "Grace".
Chance becomes their pawn as they use him to lure Skye into the family business and into an unholy marriage.
One part family saga, one part romance, one part suspense thriller, this is one of the most unique romantic suspense novels I've read in awhile.
I loved and hated Chance at times. I felt sorry for him at times and got frustrated with him all over again.
Skye was also insecure and that was understandable.
As for the suspense part, Griffen was one of the creepiest bad guys ever. He truly gave me the chills.
If you like romantic suspense , I recommend you look this one up.
Overall This one gets an A.

After writing category romance but before writing thrillers, Erica Spindler wrote romantic suspense novels. Shocking Pink is the best, and Cause for Alarm and Bone Cold aren't far behind. Fortune is like a Gothic saga, page-turner crack for the sheer amount of weird shit. You'd be forgiven for mistaking this for a V. C. Andrews novel. (Am I showing my age?)

The Monarchs are a jeweller family who think they're up with Tiffany's. At any one time, a brother-sister duo is in charge - he the businessman and she the creative. The gifted one. Currently the grandfather and his sister are leading the company, though they're getting on years. The father's generation is being skipped because he's deemed not up to the task, and there's no gifted woman. So now to take over is Griffin Monarch...and his half-sister Grace.

Once Grace's mother Madeline catches young Griffin molesting the even younger Grace, she runs away with her daughter, changing their identities. Grace is gifted, so Madeline worries the Monarchs will keep her at any cost - not just for the business, but for Griffin's incestuous interest.

Now mother and daughter are Claire and Skye Dearborn, the latter's name sounding horrendously like a soap opera character or celebrity spawn, or wannabe-celebrity spawn. Way to fly under the radar. Anyway, they join a travelling circus, where Claire works as a fortune-teller. She's gifted; not artistically, but she can sense the future.

Skye is creatively gifted, and such an annoying shit that even though you'll feel sorry for her, you won't like her. Such a pestering pain in the arse, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Chance McCord escapes from his Amish life to work any job, and schemes his way into the travelling circus. He's a little older than Skye, who desperately wants him to be her friend, even though she pisses him off relentlessly. He gives into her eventually because he feels sorry for her. That doesn't stop Skye from being an annoying git, though.

Meanwhile, the Monarchs have sent a private investigator after Claire and Skye. Claire figures that the only way to keep Skye safe is to separate from her. Oh yes, Skye has abandonment issues. Claire plans to send the PI off-track, then sneak back to retrieve her daughter. Only Skye and Chance run off from the circus.

The pair has managed to score a trailer, a car, and a job for Chance. He works whilst Skye stays in the trailer - to be seen in public would endanger her. Skye's abandonment issues, jealousy, hormones, and irritating personality came into play, and she falls in love with Chance, who's not keen on that because Skye is jailbait and Chance is practically raising her. So while not technically incestuous, it still seems a lot like it. Consider that Skye is so beautiful and talented that she could snag any guy, and the two guys she ends up with as an adult are her half-brother and her guardian. (I told you Fortune has weird shit.)

Anyhoo, after Skye's sort-of boyfriend - a homeless squatter who rooms with other homeless squatters - tries to date-rape her (Chance intervenes), Skye and Chance move away. They find a home, work, and school with a childless couple, and Chance decides to get his life back. Yeah, the themes of this novel aren't subtle - more abandonment issues for Skye.

So she becomes a talented jeweller, and Chance a public relations guru. Meanwhile, Griffin Monarch has discovered that Grace Monarch and Skye Dearborn are one and the same, and offers her a job (but doesn't tell her she's a Monarch). Griffin also hires Chance for PR, just to mess with them both. And here's where the weird shit really comes into play - the Monarchs not only know that Skye is one of them, but they shut their mouths whilst Griffin courts Skye. And she wonders why she vomits after they shag.

Then Skye falls in love with Chance again, and Griffin becomes murderously jealous. He decides to get rid of those who are keeping Skye from him - her best friend, Griffin and Skye's grandmother, Chance McCord, etc. Then when he still can't get Skye to love him, Griffin figures that if he can't have her, no one will. So he tries to kill her, too.

P.S. As a child, Griffin tortured Skye's kitten to death and made her watch. He also drowned his other half-sister (a non-gifted Monarch). The Monarchs really are an effed-up bunch if they never suspect that Griffin's been psychotic all his life and they still let him shag his half-sister. Rich people, eh? Never want their name besmirched, even if it could save lives.

"But, Tez," you say. "You've just summarised the novel. Where's the review?" Well, now you know the nitty-gritty details, you know whether Fortune is for you. Despite its over-the-top batshittedness, it's still quite a page-turner. If nothing else, it's good snark-fodder. Enjoy.

This was such an amazing read! It's been ages since I've read a book that had this brand of edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting thriller and suspense that I devoured it in one day -- finishing in the wee hours of the morning just because I couldn't stand not knowing how it would end.

This is the second book of Erica Spindler's that I've read (the first one being "Red"). I liked "Red" but I am completely enamored with "Fortune". I love how Spindler was able to weave together various themes into one coherent story -- a mother's desperate love for her child; the unspeakable evil in a man; an unlikely friendship that eventually ended with love ever after; and the lengths people would go to for their ambition and for the fulfillment of their dreams.

"Fortune" is a richly evocative story with highly developed characters -- you can't not know how each of the main characters think and feel -- and yet, it was done so suavely that nothing even remotely approached over-the-top, detail-intensive writing. The pace was just sublime -- perfectly timed so that each period of time within the characters' lifetimes were given the due attention they deserved.

It was almost a pity to end the book. I highly recommend this for anyone who just wants a good book to keep them up at night or keep them company on a cold rainy armchair reading day.

A fast paced thriller with generous dose of romance thrown in but in spite of all that, the touching factor was the mother's love for her daughter, the lengths that any mother would go to to protect her child. Some parts of the novel are so taut that we can feel the terror that holds Claire in a vise.
Brilliant writing!

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Fortune

I have read many an Erica Spindler novel, though usually her more recent crime/thriller novels. While I enjoy them, they are somewhat formulaic and fairly indistinguishable from others in the genre. I noticed the difference in both tone and style within the first chapter of 'Fortune'. It was instantly engaging and I loved that we were involved in the story from start to finish. There were no teasing prologues and slow release of information through memories, as so many novels now do, this was us, in at the deep end and in the race until it finished.

The benefit of being involved in Madeline/Grace/Chance's stories from start to finish gave the book a wonderful emotion edge that usual romantic/suspense novels can lack. These were real and well-developed characters with depth of emotion and history. I loved that we got to see how Chance bonded with both Claire and Skye. I loved that nothing was spared from those months at the carnival or after they'd left. It was often bleak, but it gave foundation to the later impacts of the plot.
It showed us how much Claire loved Skye, how only the most horrific of events would tear them apart, how Chance stepped up without any need, throwing away his own life to protect a girl that he had known a short space of time. It gave everything so much more gravity.

After this gushing, it may be difficult to see why my rating isn’t 4/5 star. Mainly because the second half of the novel really dropped the ball. Gone were these street-wise, loyal and hard-done by kids, and in their place were these arrogant, oblivious and naïve characters with the same names. I hated that with the introduction of Griffin, Chance and Skye became blind to any animosity or possible danger. They both knew that Skye had a dangerous past, they both had these unexplained reactions to Griffin at times, and yet neither ever once questioned him. Chance was constantly referred to as this smart, intelligent business man with an ability to read people, and yet he was oblivious, even when faced with obvious evidence.

It felt like I'd stopped reading the first book and started another, completely unrelated book. The first book had characters to champion who were deep and well-developed, the second had morons who couldn't see beyond their own noses.

In the beginning there was a five star rating on the horizon. By the end, there was a reader with a sore head and a cloud of disappointment over her, because it had slipped to a three star average.

I am a huge Erica Spindler fan but this book was just not up to par with some of her other works. This one just lacked the tightly-packed suspense of her later novels, though the writing and character development are still quite high. The suspense was more of waiting for the protagonist to discover the horrifying/sickening predicament she was in then the eminent threat of danger. I'd recommend this book to people who like a well-done romance novel with a tinge of suspense thrown in for good measure. Suspense lovers should look elsewhere.

Wow! Brilliant book! I haven't read one of Erica's books for ages, and I'd forgotten how good she is! A real page Turner right from the start.
So here's the spoiler bit. Madeline married into a rich and powerful family who have a long established jewellery making business. She soon realises after the birth of her daughter, Grace that there's something really wrong with her stepson, griffen catching him in depraved behaviour towards little Grace. So feeling trapped and being left made to feel crazy by her husband and father in law, she flees with Grace. And they meet a young boy called Chance while working with a carnival. But because the Monarchs are rich and powerful and controlling they soon learn of their whereabouts. Can Madeline, with her psychic abilities keep Grace from being taken away from her and safe from griffen and the harm he will do to her? As griffen eventually finds Grace, now Skye, he lures her back to the family and intends to marry her!!!! But can Chance save her before griffen becomes even more dangerous and goes completely insane?

This novel had a slightly different feel to it than some of Erica Spindler's other novels. The story of a greedy twisted family and the lengths they will go to in their quest to maintain the family fortune. As usual, very well written. One tends to get completely wrapped up in the lives of the characters as you are reading.

Hooked to the book from start to end. It was intense, terrifying and filled with emotions. Griffen was absolutely evil. Chance and Skye's relationship was not perfect, they were not perfect but damn their chemistry was simply beautiful. Erica Spindler never ceases to amaze me.

It could of been a great book, but too many things happened that 99%of the world would handle differently. Also, I think the way Chance talked to Sky at times was really not the way his personality would do in the rest of the book.
