Co-authored by Janet Arnold, Jenny Tiramani, Luca Costigliolo, Sebastien Passot, Armelle Lucas and Johannes Pietsch, the book features patterns for 26 pairs of bodies and stays, 2 busks, a stomacher, 10 hoops, a farthingale and a rump. There are 160 pages in full colour, including the patterns.

About the author

Janet Arnold (6 October 1932 – 2 November 1998) was a British clothing historian, costume designer, teacher, conservator, and author. She is best known for her series of works called Patterns of Fashion, which included accurate scale sewing patterns, used by museums and theatres alike. She went on to write A Handbook of Costume, a book on the primary sources on costume study, and Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlock'd, as well as many other books.

Arnold was awarded the inaugural Sam Wanamaker Award in 1998. After her death, the Society of Antiquaries of London who had previously made her a fellow, created a grant in her name, as did The Costume Society, which she helped to found.

The latest installment of Patterns of Fashion does not disappoint. 200 years of women's underpinnings are explored in detail in these pages, with a huge amount of colour pictures this time. The patterns are easy to understand and the additional material is interesting and serves to give a very full accounting of these articles of clothing. Particular highlights are the ivory stay busk from the Victoria and Albert Museum, the court stays, petticoat, and train of Sophia Magdalena of Sweden and Costigliolo's instructions for drafting stays. The latter seems like a bit of a rushed addition and could have done with extra detail, but it's excellent nonetheless for those wanting to take historical stay patterns and draft them to the correct size with minimal fuss.

If you want to get into the nitty-gritty of stays or hoops, this is the book you need.
