Cain doesn’t ask much of life, a little meat sizzling over a fire, a roof over his head, and a buckskin shirt to cover him. The meat may be little burnt, the roof may only be a star studded sky, and the shirt may be hard to come by. But he can brush those little problems off and go on living his life. What he can’t tolerate is someone going to great lengths to have a friend of his murdered. Nor can he abide two wild and out of control brothers causing the death of a well-liked old man. Cain had taken the old fella under his wing and made sure he had enough to eat. When the brothers met Shadrac they got a taste of their own medicine, which caused a declaration of war by the largest cattle spread in the area. Cain finds himself fighting battles on two different fronts. Cain only has three rules 1) Don’t mess with my friends. 2) Don’t bother women folk or youngens. 3) Don’t mess with me.
Lou Bradshaw is a lifelong story teller, who spent most of his life as a commercial illustrator and graphic artist. Deadlines, clients, and vendors were all sources of sleep depriving stress. To combat insomnia, he would often create stories in his mind to take the place of what was bothering him. Soon, some of those stories had grown to the point that they needed to be put on paper. Taking up a felt tip pen and a loose leaf binder, he found something new, challenging, and exciting. He soon filled multiple binders and his distraction had become a passion. Upon retirement, he began assembling notes and scribbles into novels… the rest is history. One of the unique features of his work is that as a dyslexic child, he was considered either slow or lazy by most of his teachers. To date he has written 7 books, which is 6 more than he was able to read while in school. His only legitimate book report, although 3 months late, was Huckleberry Finn. Lou and his wife Avon live in the Missouri Ozarks, where they enjoy their family, golf, and the great outdoors.
I have had the great fortune to be able to read all of the Shad Cain books and this one good them all. I have enjoyed all of the Ben Blue series, also, which definitely makes Mr. Bradshaw a very exciting author to follow. These two series are practically unsurpassed in their quality and the adventures never ceases throughout the entire series. This story is certainly very touching at times, but the author has the wherewithal to bring humor in at the precise moment to regain his readers attention.
No problem, five stars and more to this heavenly masterpiece that starts fast and never slows down. Cain is the master when it comes excitement and getting the job done with finesse. I am an avid follower of Mr. Lou Bradshaw, but he stepped it up a little bit with Kain's persistent involvement, which definitely enhances the entire story.
Cain is an avid believer in justice and this story certainly takes his efforts to an all time high. The character selections are certainly impressive from beginning to end and the storylines couldn't have been more descriptive. There were times I was definitely mesmerized and my mind was totally focused on what the next episode would be developing into. This is a must read for all lovers of American folklore, as the excitement never ceases, and the events are so forthcoming that you will be as entertained as I was. The author does an excellent job in his presentation throughout the entire book and the excitement never ceases. Read this book! You loss, if you don't!
Howdy, this is another great adventure of our friends Shad, Dog and Buck. This man is just a down to earth true friend to his friends and the new ones he makes. He's all for helping the defenseless "youngens" what we refer to as youngsters, women and his old mountain men who are dying out. This adventure has a bit of everything, but Shad had been thinking about Angelina Ramos, he truly loves this woman, but she's not for Shad, he knows, but he hopes she'll come around to accepting his love...oh well such is life. She wrote Shad a letter..you know "Dear John," well she's marrying another, and sends her apologies for not marrying him...so again, that's how the wind blows. Shad took it in stride, he and Dog did a walk around their beautiful Marble Mountains. I hope this author plans for Shad to meet a nice lady who'll reciprocate the feelings he has for Angelina, who really is the love of his life. Well, all you cowboys and cowgirls keep your bedroll dry and your coffee hot and sweet, a dab of milk wouldn't hurt...
I was very pleased with this book It was a book that was very difficult to put down The different people with their personalities tend to hold the reader into the story You go from a mountain man with little education to a man well suited to his environment able to find a way of life with many pitfalls to a story with a very happy ending. Leaving the reader waiting for he next book Thank you very much, I've all ready downloaded the next two books
An LB Shad Cain Western (8)/Gunfights/A Crazy Woman/ Four Dead Sons
LB has penned the 8th western in the Shad Cain Series which contains some serious Janeiro for Cain. Cain has a disagreement with two cowboys who happen to have a confused Mother and injured Father. They blame Cain for their woes and Taylor it out on him. That's when they find they had treed a mountain. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
What a great book and awesome characters. This series has been fun to read. Mr. Bradshaw you are one of the best authors I have enjoyed reading. You truly make a story come to life. Please write more than fifty books. Would highly recommend this series and his other series to everyone that enjoys a super great western.
I read every book that Lou Bradshaw wrote....they are all wonderful full of action and surprise. The writing is so smooth and entertaining that when you start with first sentence you can't stop reading. No sleeping nor work done before the book is finished. It is addicting and a warning should be put on cover. I strongly recommend it
Thank you Lou Bradshaw for a really great book. I really enjoy these books on ShadCain, he never really gets mad, he is so payed back about everything. Look forward to the next book on Shad.
Probably gettin old but the truth is the truth. You have a way of saying it better than most. I am almost as old as you are and you bring me LOTS of pleasure and I doubt anyone could honestly ask for more.
I am not a fan of books written from the stand point of the main character, and really don't like it when it is a local dialect. This one had it n spades. Good story, just not my favorite
This story was a good read that was written in the first person, which made it very enjoyable . The author put a lot of action and adventure in the story enough to satisfy all.
Good words in a row! Decent plot, good characters! But some of the spelling errors show you depend too much on the computer. For example, smooth boar? A fare replica? I don't know much, but you don't use pine wood to smoke meat. It has way too much rosin in it.
A very good and entertaining novel. I have read most of the novels by this author and enjoyed them. I will read more by this author. I recommend this book to everyone.
Best Mountainman novels I have had the pleasure of reading. Written to reflect the time with more hint of political correctness...so refreshing! I read them outloud to my wife who recently had a cochlear implant. Reading his novels outloud makes the character, Cain, come alive. Great entertainment!
Shad has survived another battle. Good thing he has Dog to help. I thought he might leave his mountain cave after that woman fell in the lake, and Angelina is marrying someone else. Perhaps the next book will have the answers.
